Good atmospheric psychological horror from down under. Kind of got the feeling the writer/director hadn't made up her mind exactly what kind of film she wanted it to be in parts but on the whole very enjoyable. 8/10

I thought this as well. It did a pretty good job of building up tension. I thought the mother's acting throughout was superb.

Frailty: A man confesses to an FBI agent that his deranged father was a serial killer who murdered people on the belief he was sent by God to kill demons.

It's told through a flashback to when he was a child and his dad started killing and how it affected him and his brother.

I won't say much more otherwise it'll spoil the plot but I was pleasantly surprised by this. Described as a horror, it's more of a disturbing thriller but it was a good story with some great parts. Considering I had never heard of it before tonight I had low expectations but it kept me hooked.

I'm not sure the ending was as surprising as it was aimed to be but still a good watch. 7/10

On my flights to and from the USA I watched:

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Michael Bay one. I had to check it out at some point as I was a huge Turtles fan growing up, but I assumed it'd be shit. When on flights, I try to watch stuff that I assume will be shit so I don't regret not seeing it on a better screen... to be fair though, it wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be. I mean, it was still pretty shit and I don't remember much about it, but it was entertaining enough.

Taken 2: I liked the first one, but had heard that the sequels were shite. However, I actually thought Taken 2 was alright. Great concept for a sequel for a film like Taken. He killed a lot of dudes in the first film, so it's only right that the familys of these people would want revenge.

On the flight back, I only watched one film...

Taken 3: Had popped up by the time I was going back. Ok, yeah, this one wasn't very good. Pretty poor, really.

Taken was brilliant, but although Taken 2 was decent enough as an action flick, the premise was just mental.

'Hey, family... You know how we've just wiped out a large chunk of a Eurasian crime syndicate who will no doubt be out for revenge?'

'Yes?'

'Let's go to TURKEY!!!!'

'Erm'

Just watched 'Rob the Mob' which was a decent film about a couple who start holding up Mafia 'members clubs' because weapons are banned in them.

Eventually stumble across a major piece of evidence which could bring down the entire mob.

Didn't realise until after the tinal credits that it was based on a true story.

Last weekend I watched Transsiberian on i-Player. OK, so it isn't a new film (2008), but it starred Woody Harrelson, Emily Mortimer and also had Ben Kingsley playing a creepy Russian cop. Having a film that is set largely on a mode of transport doesn't have to be as bad as Snakes on a plane and this wasn't. There was enough to keep me interested, one or two moments that might not appeal to those of a squeamish or nervous disposition, and a few twists and turns that weren't too predictable.

7.5/10

Alligator - Lewis Teague

I've decided to watch a couple of "cult" movies - next up is Long Weekend - so decided to start with this horror. It's nay too bad. A young girl gets a baby alligator as a pet only for her father to flush it down the pan - for reasons not actually explained but hey! Flash forward 20 years and it's roaming the sewers, killing every Tom, Dick and Harry. Some decent scenes and some laughable ones too!

Virunga

Available on Netflix.

Outstanding documentary on an ongoing conflict in the Virunga region of Eastern Congo that doesn't get enough attention here, especially given that the film has a strong focus on the activities of a British company, SOCO, in the region. The film peels back the layers to reveal the complex dynamic produced by conservation, war and oil exploitation, and its effect on the rare mountain gorillas of the Virunga National Park and those who bravely fight to save them. I feel like this sort of movie should be compulsory viewing, I found myself quite outraged and sad not only that this happens, but that I knew so little about it. Shows the best and worst of humanity. 9/10.

Jesus, Fast and Furious 7 is kicking some ass in the box office. Was the quickest film to ever make it to $1 billion grossed (did it in 17 days, the likes of Avatar, Avengers and Deathly Hallows Part 2 took 19 days) and is currently sat as the 7th highest grossing movie of all time.

I should probably get around to watching the rest of those movies one day... but I thought that the first one was so shit it put me off watching the rest. And it's even worse when considering the fact that everybody seems to think that until it gets to like number 5 or 6 or whatever, the films only get worse. I basically want to skip to the movies when The Rock shows up, but can't bring myself to do it. The thought of skipping some movies in a series, no matter how much they suck, just sickens me.

They are all the same Oaf you don't need to bother with the rest. Think I watched the first two before leaving the series. For some strange reason though I think I'll look this out, it just looks insanely ridiculous and you can't beat a movie like that now and again.

The series just gets more ridiculous and better from the fifth movie, although I love 2 fast 2 furios. It's just a dumb movie that I enjoy watching.
The Rock just makes anything he's in better.

Beetlejuice.

watched it last night, taped from weekend, still a bloody good film, infact I'd say I enjoyed that more watching 10 years later than I did previously as you see a lot of the wee jokes.

very very fun film.

crazy opening 30 mins which had me on the edge of my seat. After that it did mellow out a bit. OK but not as good as I thought it would be. 7/10

The Fast & Furious series is sensational and you definitely need to watch them in order. They get arguably better with every sequel too, which I'd imagine is probably unprecedented with a franchise with that many sequels.

I liked the first one and really disliked the second one. But then I got back into it again with F&F5 & 6. Kind of do want to see F&F7 but will probably wait until it comes out on blu ray

Yeah that's the one. I mean, it's not like I've probably ever watch it again, but it was still ok to pass time on a flight.

That's what intrigues me about that series, the fact that I always see people say it's like the only series that gets better with the sequels, rather than getting worse. I probably will check them all out at some stage.

Dumb and Dumber To

Utterly stupid, ridiculous, artistically not needed, silly and foolish.

But it's a sequel to Dumb and Dumber, 20 years on. What the fuck do you expect. Make sure you're drunk mind, but fuck it.. Knob gags are funny.

Not that I'm the sort of person to bleat 'not as good as the book', but seriously... It's not as good as the book!!

yeah i read a review where it mentioned how it was nothing like the book. i also wasn't expecting these uber fast, rugby tackling zombies. i wouldn't probably consider them zombies per se, but that's being picky.

I like a good zombie film and it's a shame they wasted the intellectual property like that.

A mini series based on the book would have been ideal.

Using an x-files style of a different 'interview' each week with an overall story arc. Would have been great.

Perhaps Max can get his dad to do a spoof.
