The 36th Chamber of Shaolin [1978]

Cracking old kung-fu film. No dodgy cardboard walls and effects Lee had to endure, this was well made and for the most part, well executed. Usual story of town gets oppressed, a guy tries to fight back but can't, so buggers off to a Shaolin temple to train up and return kicking butt. What I liked about this though was his training as he progresses through the 30-odd chambers, where each one tests him mentally and physically training him up so he finally becomes near invincible. Slightly rushed at times, as you'd see him fail once on the tests, then return like fucking Yoda and getting plenty of appreciative nods from his masters.

It runs for a while, and the final battle is way too short, and the whole film kind of ends too quickly once he comes out the temple; but overall this was one of the best martial arts films of its day imo.

You Were Never Really Here. I went in expecting to like this. It's based on a excellent pulpy novella by Jonathan Ames, is directed by Lynne Ramsay (my favourite British director), is scored by Jonny Greenwood, and stars Joaquin Phoenix sporting a magnificent beard. What could possibly go wrong?

Err, nothing, actually. It's outstanding. Go see it.

A pretty good horror film with some jump out of the chair moments just a shame some of the acting was terrible. 7/10.

Poltergeist [1982]

Not seen this in years, used to terrify me as a kid. Was flicking through late last night and caught the start of it, so ended up watching it all. Great stuff, paced well, good build up, then it kicks off big time. Must watch - and the mum, Jo-beth Williams, oh my! :bdick:

A French - Canadian erotic thriller starring Julianne Moore, Liam Neeson & Amanda Seyfried, this was on television the wrong side of the watershed hour (imo) as it's definitely adult only viewing, good film nonetheless.

Cult of Chucky

Tries to be more psychological than others, but it's still Child Play 7, so a bit shit.

Rawhide (1951)

Four outlaws hold a stagecoach stop worker and a travelling woman and her young child hostage while waiting for a scheduled gold shipment to arrive.

Simple, claustrophobic and generally a good watch.

7/10

Requiescant (1967)

The adopted son of a preacher travels to a nearby town in search of his runaway sister only to find a power-mad, ex-confederate gang leader and his entourage ruling with an iron fist. It all kicks off.

Great film, just above Django as my favourite western so far. Effortlessly cool with a gripping (if not complex) plot. Love it.

Went to see Lady Bird. Not my choice. My wife chose it, most likely as a form of cinematic revenge. She's still sore about the fact that date night last week involved me dragging her to a film (see above) that involved auto-asphyxiation and Joaquin Phoenix killing people with hammers. Anyway...

She knew I wouldn't like this because it's my long-held belief that sulky teenagers are the most insufferable wankers on the planet and coming-of-age stories (in any medium) are among the most boring. I'd love to say Mrs Part's plan backfired and I loved this. I didn't. But it wasn't awful. It's well acted, its lean (often in creative ways) and it doesn't overindulge in quirk.

I thought it was okay, which means it probably is a masterpiece to people who actually like this genre of filmmaking.

Il grande silenzio (The Great Silence) (1968)

A spaghetti western about a mute gunfighter and his involvement in a war between outlaws and ruthless bounty hunters.

Beautiful snowbound western with lots of violence and blood, an interracial love sub-plot, a ridiculously bleak ending and Klaus Kinski at his best.

Ah Klaus Kinski, what an absolute nutter he was. Couldn't take your eyes off him on screen though, a hell of a magnetic personality. They should do a film about all his exploits, he was absolutely bonkers.

It's good fun though isn't it? One of the better sequels .

They’ve all been good fun, particularly when they stop taking themselves so seriously. Love that that got the original Andy back, and had the guy who voices chucky’s daughter in it. (She’s also in Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency on Netflix, playing a psychotic killer)

And anything with Jennifer Tilly is ok with me!

Muppet Treasure Island [1996]

Ok was a bit blootered when I got around to watching this last night, but from what I remember, I really enjoyed it. Some great gags as always, and the bit where Miss Piggy slapped Kermit into the gong, I spat out my Johnnie Walker all over my chair with laughter! Always great seeing Tim Curry too playing a lovable Long John Silver. Great stuff! :D

A western that I've wanted to see for a long time with Willie Nelson & Morgan Fairchild in the lead roles, watched it this afternoon and it's brilliant.

I saw The Ring years ago. Very creepy. Think it was a westernised version of a Japanese film.

My favourite must be Treasure of the Sierra Madre

Really enjoyed it, thought it was funny in the right places and enough suspense to keep horror fans interested. Has some reply value too. 7/10.

Saw that on Sunday. It was worth a watch, but wouldn’t put it in the brilliant category.

Just watched Murder On The Orient Express with Kenneth Branagh and thought it was quite enjoyable. Shocked when they revealed that the killer was Harry Kane all along.

Started watching Shin Godzilla.

It’s almost a Godzilla origin story, as the creatures crawls out of the sea and evolves into its adult form. But the proto-Godzilla looked so fucking goofy that it really made the rest of the film feel stupid.
