The Downward Spiral Of Existential Angst
Bring me the head of Alfredo Garcia - (1974)

Not sure If I posted about this before but I watched it again, Sam Peckinpah is one of my favorite directors and this was apparently the only film he made entirely how he wanted withought studio interference.

Starring Warren Oats as Benny a down on your luck retired US army officer who makes a living as a piano player and bar manager. he happens to ecounter two hitmen who are looking for a man called Alfredo Garcia who has impregnated the local crime bosses daughter. After finding out their is a 1 million dollar bounty he sets off with his prostitue girlfriend to make some money.

Its a dark film shot at Sam Peckinpahs height of his alcochol addiction but has gained a cult following in recent years, Roger Ebert writes a really good review explaining the theme behind it in much better detail than I can.

Was never fond of Peckinpah, just never did it for me (though I love Kubrick and he is cold to some). Like Oats a lot though, a great character actor.

Yeah he most defiantly an acquired taste sometimes you dont appreciate them on first viewing. I love Kubrick aswell A Clockwork Orange a particular favorite, still holding off on 2001 as dont want to be dissapointed.

Ah well I'm a major fanboy of 2001. Its my favourite film of all time. Like a lot of his stuff though, you've got to be in the mood of watching it - a bit like when watching Shakespeare!

Il giustiziere sfida la città (Syndicate Sadists) (1975)

A rebellious biker seeks revenge for the murder of his brother.

Not bad but nothing special, nice and violent.

Currently about halfway through Geostorm.

Trumbo (2015) 8/10

A decent film starring the very talented Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) as Dalton Trumbo the successful screenwriter in the 1940s and 50s. Cranston shines in this remarkable true story surrounding the Hollywood Ten. Starring Bryan Cranston, Helen Mirren, Diane Lane and Elle Fanning.

The Man with the Iron Heart (2017) 6/10

I've seen one or two assassinations of this guy Heydrich which i thought was a flat portrayal from Jason Clarke who took on the role, and a weaker film than previous versions of this story.
Still, worth catching if you're a history buff or missed the earlier films. Starring Jason Clarke, Rosamund Pike, Jack O'Connell and Mia Wasikowska.

The Finest Hours (2016)

Decent enough sea rescue drama set in the fifties, where a shy coastguard (Chris Pine) gets called out to a near suicide mission in rescuing the remaining crew off an oil tanker in a heavy storm. Casey Affleck lead the crew on the tanker, trying to guide them to ground before looking to be rescued, and one or two other big names including Eric Bana was in it too. Kept drooling over Pine's fiancee who I thought was the gorgeous Gretchen Mol from Boardwalk Empire, but it turns out she is a manc named Holliday Grainger.

Not as exciting or tense as other sea drama's like All Is Lost, or The Perfect Storm; but decent enough.

6/10

Father's Little Dividend (1951)

A sequel to the original Father Of The Bride with the original cast headed by Spencer Tracy as the dad and Liz Taylor as his daughter. This time the comedy is centred around the excitement - and dread - of the first grandchild, and what it means to poor old Tracy's character who thought he was finished with all that nonsense and was looking forward to an easy life after the kids moved on!

Not as funny as the first film, but the timing was still spot on and Tracy was always brilliant.

I enjoyed The Finest Hours as it was based on a true story but Eric Bana brought the film down as he' s a crap actor imo,the rest of the cast did a decent job.

He wasn't in it for long and was underused tbh. He was brilliant in Chopper.

Watched it this evening, although the one I saw was called Colonia with Emma Watson in the main role, not a bad film apart from those religious fucking nut cases who annoyed me.

Thr mad old woman annoyed me so it was great to see her get a couple of smacks  Some of it seemed too far fetched but like i said it wasn't bad.

The People Against O'Hara [1951]

Spencer Tracy plays a lawyer here trying to get off an innocent man on a homicide charge when he refuses to tell who he was with on the night of the murder since it would endanger her safety. He gets sent down (partially because Tracy plays (and of course was himself) an alcoholic) but new evidence comes to light when they discover the girlfriend, then set a trap to get the real killer.

Decent, not as good as I thought it would be, but had a completely unsentimental ending which was brutal in its execution which redeemed it slightly for me.

6/10

The Cry Of The City [1948]

I shouldn't like this as it starred that big overacting lump that thought he was gods gift, Victor Mature; however, he was very good in this playing an Italian cop who chases a cop-killer who escapes custody; and tries to get his young brother to stop idealising him and to stop him going down the inevitable path of self-destruction and causing his family further pain.

Well made, this had some great real settings in New York giving a good glimpse into those days past, and it had a good cast including Shelly Winters, and the very physically imposing Hope Emerson who you certainly wouldn't mess with (been recommended to watch Caged with her in it playing a sadistic warden who I believe Stevencc has watched?). This also showed no glory in the crimes of the antagonist, and was very much a tale of making sure to stay on the straight and narrow.

8/10

The Omega Man [1971]

I have a soft spot for old Chuck Heston (or Andy Murray as I call him), despite him being a fool off screen. Here he goes around half the film topless at 48 trying to show he's still buff (which tbf he still pretty much was!) even with the ridiculous toupee he was wearing.

Still this is enjoyable nonsense, as he plays a Doctor/Colonel who tries to find a vaccine when a global pandemic occurs after the Soviet Union and China go to war and uses chemical weapons, which kills everyone. Chuck manages to inject a vaccine that makes him immune and thinks he's the sole survivor, and goes around shooting the proto-zombies that still hang around at night, intent on killing him as a remnant of the very society that got them in this mess to begin with. On the way he meets other survivors who have the disease but is currently benign though they know they will succumb to it. Heston then gives a blood transfusion to one of the boys who is beginning to succumb and he gets cured; so Chuck decides to start giving the rest of them his blood in order for them to get cured and get out of the city to start again. He meets a black lass who he kisses and humps (the first interracial kiss on the big screen apparently), and hopes they can all start over. The zombies have other ideas and things don't go to plan.

Some of the stunt and fight scenes were laughable, especially when you clearly see the stuntman who looks nothing like Chuck throw these zombies around. However its good fun, and the screenplay and score are excellent.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018)
Very disappointing effort and by far the poorest film of the franchise. I knew it'd be crap but I just can't help myself, films about dinosaurs running amok will draw me in. If they make another I'll go see that too.

Brawl in Cell Block 99 (2017)
Second feature written and directed by S. Craig Zahler after Bone Tomahawk and it's another good one. Vince Vaughan ends up in prison after a drug deal gone wrong and he's gotten on the bad side of some Mexican cartel types. Luckily Vince has a delightfully nasty knack for violence so they may have crossed the wrong feller. Really looking forward to Zahler's next feature Dragged Across Concrete.

Calibre (2018)
Two friends from Edinburgh go on a hunting trip to the Highlands and are involved in a terrible accident which escalates quickly so they try to cover their tracks.

Super Dark Times (2017)
An accident tears two long time high school friends apart and sends their lives spiralling out of control. Very much enjoyed this one.

Cold Skin (2017)
A young man arrives on a remote island to take up his post as a weather observer only to find the man he is to replace missing and that the island isn't the kind of place you want to spend a year alone on.

The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter (2018)
Comedy penned by the bloke behind Eastbound and Down and Vice Principals. Follows a professional hunter as he spends a hunting trip attempting to bond with his 12 year old son all the while being filmed for his tv show. It's not very good overall but I have a soft spot for Josh Brolin and quite like Danny McBride so I managed to stick with it.

Saw it yesterday, and really enjoyed it, too. The twist isn't going to blow too many people away, but it was great fun, and looked amazing. The Violet v Void fight on the ship was brilliant.

Baby Driver (2017) 8/10

Baby Driver is a fast-paced exciting mixture of traditional car chase action, and a stylish drama, bank raids and getaways are carefully choreographed in time to the music. Great film by Edgar Wright starring Ansel Elgort.

Beirut (2018) 5/10

At just about two hours Beirut is never anything less than watchable, classed as a suspense thriller with Jon Hamm as Skiles, a tortured man who struggles to find his way through a labyrinth of violence and betrayal. Starring Jon Hamm and Rosamund Pike.

Beyond Skyline (2017) 5/10

A little bit stupid, but some decent creative special effects, interesting fights, and fun, alien brain-sucking will keep you moderately entertained. Starring Frank Grillo, Bojana Novakovic and Iko Uwais.

First They Killed My Father (2017)
Based on the experiences of Loung Ung who was caught up in the Cambodian genocide. It's quite a difficult watch at times but ultimately a very good portrayal of the rule of the Khmer Rouge from the point of view of a child.

How It Ends (2018)
When a mysterious disaster on the west coast of the US causes a countrywide blackout and strands Will in Chicago while his pregnant wife is in Seattle he teams up with his father in law to cross the country which has descended into chaos to find her. More often than not it comes across as amateurish and overall wastes what could have been a decent story made more of a shame by the fact they obviously had a decent budget to play with. The ending is quite annoying and I don't know whether the title of the film is supposed to be a joke or not with regards to it.

Una magnum special per Tony Saitta (Strange Shadows in an Empty Room) (1976)

A decent poliziotteschi about a Canadian police captain on the hunt for his sister's killers. On the way he is involved in a fifteen minute car chase (with instant replays), fights three tranvestites and takes on a helicopter armed with only a pistol. He wins.

Autostop rosso sangue (Hitch-Hike) (1977)

An unhappy couple pick up a hitchhiker who turns out to be a murdering thief with a suitcase full of money. He offers to strike a deal with them - money in return for driving him to safety.

Franco Nero as a drunken arsehole was hilarious.

The X-Files (1998)

I'd reached the end of the fifth season of the show and this acts as the bridge between that and the sixth season.

It was OK, it just felt like two mythology episodes with a bigger budget. I always preferred the monster of the week episodes. It answered some questions raised in the previous episodes, at least.

Great film - stylishly shot with cool characters and a gripping plot.

Never seen this one but when it has Franco Nero in it, it's worth a look. Trying to find out if there's a german dubbed version because my Italian is non-existent

Damn, this reminds me to resume my "re-watch" of the Original X-files series. I started it 2 years ago but was stucked somewhere in series 2 and forgot it later somehow
