Utopia was brilliant.

It's a shame the short-lived series lasted for only two seasons on Channel 4 before being abruptly cancelled in 2014.

Amazon has ordered an American remake of the series back in April 2018. They've ordered a nine-episode season. Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl) will write and serve as showrunner.

Sully (2016) 8/10

Another really good Tom Hanks movie with a polished performance as the heroic pilot Captain Chesley Sullenberger, Hanks yet again shows that when it comes to depicting ordinary men in extraordinary circumstances. Sully is a beautifully captured tale of bravery, from the impressive Clint Eastwood. Starring Tom Hanks and Aaron Eckhart.

The Hitman's Bodyguard (2017) 5/10

Not a great movie for my liking, car chase scenes were pretty decent, but probably far too many. I think the chemistry between Jackson and Reynolds is just enough to keep the action comedy on life support. Starring Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson and Gary Oldman.

Eden Lake (2008) 8/10

A pretty solid horror thriller well worthy of a watch, well acted, smartly directed and quite disturbing, a terrifying sordid little nightmare of contemporary Britain. I'd have to say in my book it's one of the best British thriller movies I've seen over the years. Starring Kelly Reilly, Michael Fassbender, Tara Ellis and Jack O'Connell.

Loved the courtroom scenes of Sully. I knew the basic story behind it, but hadn't followed the follow up. I enjoyed Eden Lake when I saw it. A long time ago, mind.

Exactly my thoughts when i watched this movie what the hell is going on. Ultimately the film doesn't make a whole lot of sense, and the real mystery is how a film like this ever got made. I couldn't make heads or tails of this film.

The Americans do try across the pond to make a go of our great shows, but mostly to no avail.
Then again they could perhaps give the series the conclusion it deserves. At least with Utopia, there's a storytelling imperative.

Yeah great scenes from the courtroom. I didn't really know the story behind the film. The movie was only on for 96 minutes. Eden Lake was brilliant.

The Raid 2 [2014]

Excellent sequel to the first Raid, where this time the cop goes undercover to infiltrate a powerful gang, but to do this he has to go to jail to get friendly with the son of the gang leader. Once released he seeks to bring them down (though they do a lot of that themselves as the son makes a power shift on his father).

Superbly choreographed fight scenes, brutal and inventive (though you do wonder why the countless low-ranked baddies run at the near invulnerable protagonists and don't shoot them!); decent story, great set-pieces and its never dull despite being 2.5 hours long so you get your money's worth and then some.

10/10

Top movie absolutely bang on. They just fight and fight. And fight and fight. Iko Uwais is a phenomenon.

Ant-Man and the Wasp

On the whole a good film, but probably not one of the more memorable ones from the MCU. Took too long to really get into it and for the first hour and a bit, we were sat there wandering what the fuck was going on. The last 30 or 40 minutes was back to form though. A solid 7/10

A Netflix original starring Will Smith. I think i liked it, but i woke up this morning having watched it last night and i'm still a bit confused as to what I just watched. It';s like Bad Boys but with Orcs and Elves and shit. I said to the mrs, it's different, but i'm not sure if that's good or bad in this instance. 5/10

Based on a true story this is one of the best WWI films i've seen., 500 American soldiers head into The Argonne Forest in 1918 but swiftly get surrounded by the Germans, some great battle scenes especially when they get close enough for hand to hand fighting. 9.5/10.

Il conto è chiuso (The Last Round) (1976)

Goodbye and Amen (1978)

A CIA agent's plot to overthrow an African dictator is thrown into chaos when a friend and U.S embassy employee appears to shoot two people dead before taking two hostages in a hotel room.

Fantastic film - excellently shot, extremely tense, great soundtrack, funny moments. Also a sexy lady. And a man's willy, if you like that kind of thing.

Not far off a ten.

Stevencc I think I need your help Steven, and I reckon you're the one to ask around here seeing you love foreign films.

I recall watching this South American (Argentina?) movie - around 2005-2009 I think - but I just can't recall either it's original title or the English translation. Thing is I can recall very little about this film except that the plot was basically how this chap commits some terrible crime and then seeks refuge in this sleepy remote village 'til it all blows over. IIRC, there was a pic of a sunflower, or some sort of flower anyway, on the DVD's front cover.

This film was one of those movies that relied more on cinematography than a overly complicated story line/plot. You know the type of movie I'm referring to, the ones that loads of people call 'dragging' :ffs:.

I know this is not much to go on, and tbh I'll be amazed if you know the movie I have in mind, going on the little info I've provided.

Surely gotta be one of Mark Wahlberg's finest movies. His level of commitment here is second to none....a hell of a good film.

Harry Brown (2009) 8/10

Excellent film set in modern day Britain, it's an interesting look into one man's look of getting soul-satisfying vigilante justice. Michael Caine delivers a hauntingly memorable performance as a widower who hears the news of his best friends death by the local thugs, and then begins to take out the trash. Starring Michael Caine, Emily Mortimer and David Bradley.

Jawbone (2017) 6/10

Another decent performance from Johnny Harris (This is England/The Fades). Loved him in The Fades, Harris commits himself fully, both emotionally and physically in this low-budget boxing drama. Well worth a view. Starring Johnny Harris, Ray Winstone and Ian McShane.

Concussion (2015) 4/10

This film is based on a true story about a doctor who becomes a whistleblower that eventually condemns the NFL, about exploring the link between head trauma and mental illness caused to professional football players. a slow boring movie, just not for me. Starring Will Smith, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Alec Baldwin.

Let's get back to talking about tinned soups.

I'm partial to the spring vegetable variety. Two slices of buttered bread on the side.

The Fades was possibly the most innovative show of the last decade ,absolutely crestfallen when they deemed a second series not relevant .

And to think this show won a BAFTA! They cancelled The Fades to make room for the bazillionth series of Being Human that nobody watched. I'll never forgive BBC Three for cancelling the show.

Cult classic ,curiously mishandled by those tasked with showing a modicum of prescience.

Un tipo con una faccia strana ti cerca per ucciderti (Ricco) (1973)

Ricco is in prison when his father is murdered by Don Vito. Upon his release, Ricco swears vengeance.

A fun and gory Italian/Spanish exploitation film featuring Robert Mitchum's son! Lots of blood, lots of torture scenes and lots of boobs - including the lovely Barbara Bouchet's. A man has his penis chopped off and inserted into his mouth before being thrown into a soap-making vat.

Revolver (1973)

An Italian prison official's wife is taken hostage. The kidnappers demand the release of a prisoner in exchange for her. Their demands are met but the prison official takes freshly-released criminal hostage as a power play.

Strong poliziotteschi featuring Oliver Reed and Fabio Testi. Reed was brilliant - I've never seen an actor swear so well on film, he practically spits out the curses and they are all the more powerful for it.

All penises stay attached to their owners in this one.

Ah, Oliver Reed. Really like him since I first saw him as a young boy in the Musketeers film alongside Michael York and the beautiful Faye Dunaway, where he played Athos (suitable for him).

He fits perfectly into an italian movie of the 70's, he always looked more like a southern european than a brit for me tbh.

Detective Story [1951]

Kirk Douglas is a no-nonsense detective who doesn't have grey areas. Everything is either good or bad and he doesn't budge on either, even if something crops up in his whiter than white wife's past.

This tells the story of a day in the life of him, his sense of justice even if it includes battery of crooks to get his man; but also of how, as the day goes on, his morality is questioned and how he copes, or otherwise, as he starts to unravel, culminating in a tragic ending as he seeks redemption.

Kirk as usual dominates the screen, his physicality on full display here as he goes through the full gambit of emotions. He does overact as I have said previously, however there is one scene in particular that is performed very movingly indeed between him and his wife.

Excellent from start to finish, highly recommended.

9/10

La Jetee [1962]

Superb French short film that has been the basis of many a sci-fi film since (notably 12 Monkeys). It tells the story of a man who lives through the third world war as a child, but his last memory is the image of a terrified woman standing on an airport jetty before it all kicks off. He sees out the war, lives underground and is tested on by experimenters trying to time travel in order for society to move on and learn from their mistakes. He succeeds and meets the woman at different moments in time, where they form a kind of bond culminating in that final image.

This film was unusually told by using photographs as a montage to tell the story, with a narrator explaining everything as it went along. This works well as it is reflective of the way memory is recalled as we think about things that have happened in our lives. The use of sound worked well too to help draw you in to each scene.

Very influential film indeed, and I can see why it is so highly rated by film buffs.

10/10

Song Of The Sea [2014]

Cracking Irish fantasy animation, telling the story of a young boy who finds out his mute sister is a selkie (an old Irish/Scots mythological creature able to turn from human to seal, and probably where the ideas of mermaids come from), who has the ability to help free all sorts of Celtic creatures and fairies from a powerful goddess. At first he is repellent of his sister as his magical mother who he idolised, died giving birth to his sister. However as they go along their journey, meeting all sorts of weird and wonderful creatures from folklore, a bond develops between them, and as her magical powers wain - and she dices with death - he tries to save her.

This was incredibly inventive, funny and extremely moving - I was bubbling away like a guid ain! Apparently it was hand drawn too, which you can see in every frame, giving extra life and mysticism to some of the scenes.

Great fun for all the family, but bring tissues!

10/10

The Innocents [1961]

Seen this masterpiece before, but couldn't remember much about it. Deborah Kerr stars as a governess who is free to look after the niece and nephew of an uncaring selfish bachelor who just wants live his hedonistic ways and be left in peace. The children are based in his eerie country pile, and from the moment Kerr arrives, she sees there is something off and unsettling about the place.

The children seem oblivious to the fact there is a malevolent presence there, but appearances can be deceptive, and one moment they look all 'innocent' and sweet-natured; but with just one look is there devilment behind those eyes?

Gripping story, the acting from the adults, and especially the children (in particular the wee boy) is superb; and it has some decent scares in it too which would have been terrifying for the day, but still work well today as they are so subtley done. Great twist at the end as well, and the use (and lack of) music at key times is very unnerving.

10/10
