the Migrant Crisis

I'm not sure much of our aid is truly unconditional as it stands. Though I imagine most of the conditions are based upon financial and military concerns rather than social issues.
yeah, like the whole 'what is a coup?' debate in the u.s. after the, errrr egyptian coup. they should have, and they were definitely supposed to (according to their own rules and regulations), have stopped aid, so they tied themselves in knots lying about how it wasn't really a coup so they didn't leave a fragile, non-islamist ally in the dust

I read about it a couple of days ago, if I recall right that happened back in 2014 and has come to light only now.

A single unitary authority for urban Dorset
Denmark government have secured a parliamentary majority for legislation to allow the Danish authorities to seize incoming migrants' cash and other assets worth more than 10,000 kroner / 1,300 euros / £1000.

Integration Minister Inger Stojberg said the measures "simply put migrants on an equal footing with jobless Danes", who must sell assets above a certain level to claim benefits.

However the legislation is heavily criticised by the UN.

Is it being applied retrospectively? If they plan to do that to migrants who have already arrived that's very harsh. Actually no. It's unfair.

If it's their rule for all new migrants then fine. Don't think it's particularly wise, but they can see who (good and bad) they deter and how much money it brings in from those willing to pay.

I assume this is more about discouraging migrants from coming to Denmark than anything else. Denmark was also the country that was putting out anti-migration propaganda in Lebanon IIRC. Still, hard to justify taking the possessions off people who will no doubt mostly be ignorant of this practise, especially if it means taking wedding rings and shit.

Wedding rings exempted from this apparently.

I think it's just the pressure to have the same benefits system for everyone. If Danish people want to qualify for benefits, they must not have valuable possessions or money. However, what remained unclear to me about this Danish proposal is that can refugees choose to not hand in their valuables and excess cash if they give up benefits? They should have that choice.

if u r going for full integration and equality with existing citizens that seems fair. if the intention is to treat them well, but ultimately send them back when conditions change, then it seems harsh

If the Earth really was round, then why don't the migrants just tunnel straight here from Syria? Open your eyes Mark.

David Cameron is a pig fucking wanker, but he was right with his common sense approach to this mass migration. Germany were kinda stuck between a rock and a hard place though due to falling birth rates and stagnating population.

Switzerland are starting to do the same as Denmark are proposing, seizing refugees' cash above 1000 euros.

Meanwhile, some Danish night clubs have started to require a language test in order to get in, because refugee males have been behaving unacceptably towards women at these nightclubs (groping and harassing). The language test (you need to speak either Danish, English or German) is to guarantee that bounces are able to communicate with the customers.

I read these from a Finnish news site, so no links to sources, sorry.

Germany could have devised a more sensible means by which boost their youth population. Or to have tightened their belts and accepted that you can't just import more and more people in order to support the elderly and keep growth going.

Letting everyone in was madness and even with the changes being proposed now the influx when the weather improves later this year will be enormous.

Not a fan of the Danish approach. If you are going to let people in there is absolutely no point hindering them from getting on their feet by taking away their valuables. It reeks of a populist move to appease voters.

I would have thought you'd rather have people who could support themselves for a bit coming into the country. Doesn't make sense to make them "poor" and more dependent upon the state straight away.

Also if they have a lot of possessions then they might have had some success in the past and so might be a skilled worker.

Re pretty racist Sweden...story emerging that the police may have covered up sexual assaults carried out by migrants.

I expect a lot more of these types of stories will come out of Sweden. The modus operandi over there seems to be to cover these sorts of things up. There's another story about a school boy who was stabbed to death by a young refugee for trying to stop him harassing girls that was also hushed up somewhat. Only Lithuanian news outlets (because he was Lithuanian) seem to be covering it openly.
