Now, to address the elephant in the room. The eagle-eyed among you will have noticed that a staple of my previous posts in this wonderful thread is missing here. Well, my cat threw up on the purple pillow and my partner decided to throw it away without consulting me. Don't worry, she was disciplined for this. I hope you can get used to the new presentation pillow just as I hope I can one day.

I've never seen it for less than £45 in the shop, it's a policy that it's never on offer I suspect. A bit annoying. Doesn't stop me buying one or two bottles a year though.

My missus once bought me a bottle for £25 on half price. One bottle!! The silly moo. I went back to get more a bit later when if finished work and they'd all gone. The one and only time I've seen it on offer.

It's not necessarily price (although the rule of thumb is that it is). But If all you have consumed is mass produced blended shite like Bells or Grouse then I'm not surprised your view of whisky isn't great. You have to try a good single malt, and in the right way. There are so many cask types, variations and flavours and within that different strengths and ages. It's my favorite alcoholic drink by far. Unfortunately, if you have a fussy taste like myself, it's also one of the most expensive.

You could literally read about whisky for hours and only touch the surface of what there is to know.

Try a bottle of single malt that states the age on the bottle. If the bottle doesn't state the age, or state it's single malt, leave it. A lot of the bigger distilleries are guilty more and more of selling crap whiskey labelled with odd names which is usually very young. Stay away from blended crap. Try and avoid ones that say they are smokey or peaty first time out, try a Speyside or something as they tend to be a bit more accessible. A Glenmorangie or Glenlivet would be good. And add a small amount of water to a measure. Not a lot, literally a couple of drops from a teaspoon. It just opens the dram up that little bit. This is personally taste, but I'd definitely recommend it for someone trying real whiskey for the first time.

On course, this all depends if your palate is matured enough to enjoy a gentlemans drink

I'm at a disadvantage because whisky was the first thing alcoholic drink I was sick off when I was a youngster. I need to learn though, I wanna be one of them OG's that picks up a fancy glass and pours in some expensive whisky after a stressful day.

Would this one pass the test?

I've tried the 10 or 12 Glendronnach and really liked it. 18 year old would be super mature though and possibly a bit 'deep end'! Not to mention bleedin' expensive. I'd try something more mainstream first.

I haven't tried some of the more mature whiskies yet tbh, as I only seriously got into it this year. Going through the standard repertoire just now which will take some time, but I look forward to trying them all out. I am quite fortunate that a friend of the in-laws is a whisky blogger and we are hopefully going to be sorting out a whisky club in the next few months here, and I'll be able to learn loads more. I'm staying away from the older whiskies currently until I'm more experienced, and even then I'm unsure I'll be sampling all that many as the price some of them are getting is outrageous and supposedly not worth the outlay for what you are getting on top of the standard bottles, unless its an absolute stonker.

Really enjoying learning more and more about it though the deeper I get into it, and though I'm still struggling with certain tastes and aroma's which I hope will come with experience, even the more complex drams I have sitting there like a cask strength Springbank can have something different to it on every sip and are always interesting. Some bottles improve as you go down the bottle due to the oxidation, my Old Pulteney 12 I just finished was very briney and dry to start with (with an aftertaste I felt of kipper skins!), but developed lovely citrus notes to it in the last third of the bottle and it just got better and better.

For those who are drinkers and want to try out whiskies, I concur with Pags to stay away from Bells, Grants and Grouse, and some of the cheaper blends. Start out with a Highland Park, Bunnahabhain 12 (lovely stuff and only £33 at Morrisons here) or Laphroig/Caol Ila if you want a peat monster thats reasonably priced, and take it from there.

I bought my cat a collar* with a bell on it to try and make his job a bit harder when it comes to hunting mice and birds. We've had him for two years or so but he's only been an outdoor cat since we moved in December. From then until just under a week ago we never had him bring an animal in but in the last five days he has brought in four mice and one bird. The collar seems to have made him even more proficient at hunting because he's brought in three mice today. I'm not posting a picture of the collar because it's fucking crap and doesn't do what it says on the tin.
