Started Transistor earlier this evening. From the developers of Bastion, which was superb. Not on the same level as that, and combat is a bit wank imo, but it's decent nonetheless. Good soundtrack, excellent character design and art style etc. just lacking in the gameplay department a bit.

Playing Mafia 3 and a little bit of Sniper Elite at the moment.

Having recently completed Watch Dogs 2, Mafia 3 isn't up to the same standards. It's a good solid game but it's not a classic.

Sniper Elite - meh.

Just completed Rise Of The Tomb Raider. Enjoyed it, but not as much as the earlier reboot. Playing through all the DLC stuff with it now. Played almost all of the Tomb Raider games, how sad is that!

Horizon is phenomenal.

It really does, and I totally did plan to get it... but...

I feel a bit sorry for it, because I feel like it's come out at the worst possible time, with Zelda out just 2 days after. If, right now, people are thinking of a game with a big, beautiful open world... well, as great as Horizon is (and really, I'm sure it's superb), I feel like Zelda has somewhat stolen its spotlight.

You don't need to feel sorry for it. It is a bigger success so far than even Uncharted 4 and is soundly beating Breath of the Wild in sales.

I got it for free last week. The benefits of having a brother-in-law who does freelance marketing work for various publishers. It is certainly quite a bit of fun. I'm not sure that it is phenomenal; an antidote to the rubbish Ubisoft open-world games of the past few years, though, definitely.

Completed the story and all the side quests, only one thing left: twilight missions. Just under 70 hours played...think this is my favourite game this generation.

Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
I seem to have a habit of doing a lot of side stuff before story stuff in these open world games and this is no different. I'm only in Zora's Domain after spending hours exploring the wild, dyeing my clothes purple and getting some rupees earned so I could buy and upgrade some stuff.

Horizon Zero Dawn
Been doing a lot of side stuff without paying much attention to the actually story missions. I've caught up with Olin at the dig site, explored the large tower and now I'm at the ambush site with Errend or whatever he's called.

Alluded to it once before already but Horizon is superb. I would dare even Jockney himself to dislike it. Story, combat & visuals are all top-notch.

Big fan of those games where everyone's played it so differently. Two people at work have also been surging through it and neither of them have equipped the ropecaster once whereas it's probably my most relied upon weapon - one of them thinks traps and tripcasters are overpowered and I can't get on with them at all.

I've just done Maker's End (story progression is starting to heat up) and have done most side missions up to this point too so sat around level 28 which made taking down the Deathbringer rather anticlimactic.

Interesting Cas, what's it like playing Zelda and Horizon at the same time?

I know that they're quite different, but they've also got a hell of a lot of similarities as well, and I always hate the thought of playing two games that are two similar at the same time. Hell, I even put myself off of getting Ghost Recon because of the fact that I didn't want to be playing it and Zelda at the same time because they're both big open world games, even though the similarities pretty much stop at that

But I can imagine getting shit mixed up in my head. Like, expecting to see Robot Dinosaurs on Zelda or jumping off of cliffs trying to use my parachute on Horizon.

Guh, I've got a backlog of games I want to buy that's growing by the god damn day, it seems. I mean, as well was Horizon I still REALLY intend to get Doom, Resident Evil VII, for Honor (though is that still worth it, or has the novelty worn off?), Dishonored 2, Watchdogs 2 and I still want to get around to actually trying out Assassins Creed Syndicate and The Last of Us is well overdue for a second playthrough on PS4... and now there's also Ghost Recon the other day (though by the time I can get it, I have to wonder if it'll be worth it still... same concern I have with Dishonored).... and then, two big ones coming this month with a new GOD DAMN MASS EFFECT as well as like the 90th compliation of HD Kingdom Hearts games but the first one to actually have 1 and 2 in one bundle, which I really want. But both of those come out while I'm away on Holiday... plus I doubt i'll have Zelda done by then, and can I really fit one/both of them in with that as well? No. No I can't. Which means that, disgustingly, I can see myself now waiting to buy Mass Effect Andromeda, which is crazy considering the fact that I fucking love the ME games and rate it as one of my favourite series.

The games industry needs to SLOW THE FUCK DOWN.

Maybe once every couple of years you play a game that comes together to create an experience that is greater than the sum of its parts. A game like Bloodborne, where changing just one aspect of the combat, or choosing a slightly different art design, or laying out level design in a slightly less ambitious way, would lessen the experience to the extent that it'd be unrecognisable. I like HZD and have enjoyed playing it, but it isn't a Bloodborne or a Witcher III. It certainly has more going for it than similar open-world games, but you could have fundamentally the same experience if you changed everything bar the (admittedly really fun!) combat mechanics. I'd put in the same bracket as something like Far Cry 3, which is another game I revisit often and have a lot of fun with but in subsequent play throughs have never got anything close to the experience I first had with it.

Like you said they're both actually quite different. While they're both open world games, both of them do things very differently and I don't think many of their respective mechanics are all that similar. I've been going back and forth between both games since I've got them and I've never really felt any sort of repetition due to similarity. Normally I'm sort of the same as you, Oaf - I can't really play similar games back to back. Had this problem going through the AC and Batman games.

Legend of Zelda
Defeated the guardian boss in Zora's Domain. Took me a few attempts because I kept running out of arrows. Started using the cryo power to destroy those ice blocks and then managed to defeat it. Not sure where I'll venture next. I quite fancy getting 3,000 Rupees together for that house in Hateno village.

Horizon Zero Dawn
Still doing a lot of the side quests and errands. Think I'm done with Olin's story unless he pops back up in the main story. I need to help Avad and Erend in Meridian in the next story mission.

Nier Automata
Played this for five or so hours in the last day or so. No idea what to expect when I went in as I didn't really pay much attention to it outside of its E3 reveal last year. It's excellent although a little strange. I quite like how it goes from hack 'n' slash to platform to schmup gameplay through the first few hours. Story is quite interesting so far, characters are decent enough and the world is fun to be in. Combat is good, although it feels like a heavily watered down Bayonetta.

Ha, you're exactly where I am on Zelda Cas, I just beat that same guardian last night. And yeah, the bastard took up a lot of arrows... I didn't think about using the ice power!

I've decided to try to push on with the main quest a bit now, rather than letting myself get distracted. I've completely failed on that aim several times, but yeah. I'm trying, damn it.

But seriously though, when you see a little spiral shaped peninsula, how can you NOT go and check it out? Hyrule has waited 100 years for me to save them all, they can wait a little bit more.

Currently playing Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands which I'm really enjoying. But when I'm online on my own I've been playing Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 which has been very enjoyable and a original twist on the original Anime series.

I got it on launch day, it's okay but Im finding it a bit slow going so far. To be fair, it took me a while to get into the first one, so Im not writing it off just yet or anything.

Finally finished. Bloody love this game but the last hour or so is a bit difficult. Think I may have been too low level.

Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories
So I've never played this before and I'd heard mixed reviews going. Turns out, I actually really like this. It's taken me a while to get my head around cards but I think I've just about got there. I've done a few worlds and the only world card I have left is Halloween Town.

Really enjoyed this game. Was quite fun trying out different card deck combinations. Only downside is that the game was far, far too easy. Onto Kingdom Hearts II now.

Not playing this yet due to obvious reasons, but then I won't be able to post this in a few days due to my life being consumed:

I'm up to Atlantica. Everything about this is better than the first KH game. Absolutely loving it so far.

Started this and I really, really like it. That Gloo gun is fucking brilliant. Not got to far in; I've just got the suit upgrade which allows you to go outside.
