Yeah I know I'm tempted to walk away purely on principle but I'd probably be making things unnecessarily difficult for myself.

After 3 months the company should take me on directly and that will be a pay increase.

I get the honour of paying their Employers National Insurance as well. There's a lot in the press about this at the moment. Apparently it works well if you're on good money but it's no good for someone like me.

I rang up today and they've upped the initial rate to £9 p/h but its still not improved my actual rate. Sent a lengthy email explaining what I think about it and the agency guy is saying he's going to try to sort something out.

I told him he no one gets told a pay rate and then thinks they are going to have to take off £40 per week before you've even paid any of your own tax. We'll see what he sorts out.

He tried it on a bit on the phone saying they have others who would take it etc but that didn't really work with me. I know the company are keen on me and there are plenty of jobs like this out there.
I've heard of this kind of practice before but only in the building trade and occasionally in catering. It's normally pretty upfront though. This sounds well dodgy mate. Good that your being straight with them though.

Yeah it seems to be mainly in construction at the moment as all the reports I found were about builders.

I'll put it down to experience and I've warned everyone I know to double check before they accept a role.

Saw an article saying how the weight of boxes of Quality Street are less than half what they were 20 years ago (like every other chocolate item tbh). Yet are more expensive than ever.

Christmas cards, fooking bullshit.

I haven't sent one for about 15 years, but my in-laws even send individualised ones - "to a special daughter / grandson / granddaughter etc at Christmas". They don't even have the excuse of living in a different country.

In fact, I'll extend that to all greetings cards. When I get my annual five birthday cards, I can't wait to blue bin them after a respectful 3 days.

I haven't done cards for birthdays or Christmas for five years. One year I just told everyone not to bother giving me any because they wouldn't be receiving one from me. People still give me cards though, I think they're testing my resolve. I won't break.

The only time a card is appropriate in my view is as a thank you for something somebody has done for you, that way I can articulate my gratitude along with a gift. I know that card isn't getting glanced at once and then chucked in the bin after an arbitrary period of time.

People who read the menu next to you at the canteen out loud and pondering what they may or may not have.

Absolutely fucking useless.

Macclesfield Town/Manchester City. It's complicated.
People who queue up in front of you at any establishment where the menu is displayed behind the counter (and especially in places like McDonalds where everyone KNOWS what's on it) and after waiting in line for ages, get to the front and say.......

'Ermmmmmmmmmmm.... Let's see.....'

See also the old biddies who bung their shopping on the conveyor belt thing at the supermarket, stand and wait, and then leave it until after everything has been scanned and bagged before starting to look for their card.

FFS. Did you think it was going to be free this time?
