To be fair if you've got an old PC you don't really use knocking around you can make your own, as the KODI software that it uses is freeware and controllable from your phone. You just need to install it and tell the PC to boot right into KODI and you're golden, takes about 5 minutes.

It's a similar argument to people thinking you don't 'need' more than 1 monitor on your computer, until they get a dual hooked up and wonder how they coped without it. Set top boxes are so much more than just Sky and Virgin these days, technology is capable of so much more.

You know that laptops and TVs sync without HDMIs these days?

I can't understand how you could buy one if you don't see the point in one, and I really don't. £130 so I didn't have to go to the same website to watch things and then press the button on my laptop to make it appear on the TV.

Right, I'm about to bore you and everyone else (no change there I hear). You can't stream to a TV from a PC that is running a VPN connection, because effectively the VPN means it isn't on the same network as the TV, despite both being connected to the same router. The only way around this is to buy a router that can be configured with your VPN as opposed to installing VPN software on each device, but this costs more than the device I've just bought. So that is part of the reason I got this Windows 10 mini PC. It allows me to stream off the internet, through my VPN which is running on it, directly to my TV via HDMI. And with my wireless keyboard and built in mouse, I have full control of it from the comfort of my couch. It's effectively like having Windows 10 on my 50" television, as it's so small I have it stuck to the back of the TV out of sight.

The rest of the appeal spireite_uk has already covered. Having to connect my laptop to the TV via HDMI was a pain. I've been doing it for some time now and decided to pay £95 for easier convenience. And after testing it last night on a 1080p test stream with zero lag and stutter, it was definitely money well spent.

I just run a HDMI cable from my GPU to the TV and switch the desktop over to the TV to watch stuff. If I wasnt lazy as fuck I'd build myself a little media server from old parts. But I am, so I wont. Plus the extra excercise I get from standing up and moving 5ft to play the next episode of Fargo is what keeps me in such fantastic shape.

You know if you tripped over your trailing Hdmi cable, break your leg and (more importantly) pull your desktop off your desk and knacker it, but on the way it falls on your head and gives you brain damage.... You'll feel a right wally!

The idea of a media server made from old computer parts has never appealed to me enough to bother doing it. Besides, I doubt the wife wouldn't put up with a crappy old PC banging out fan noise next to the TV, another appeal to the one I bought is that it's fanless and therefore silent.

It runs behind my desk, so no chance of that. I thought of everything me, safety first and all that. Used to have an app on my phone for controlling the mouse cursor and keyboard until I broke it too, so no need to move from the comfort of my sofa/bed. The cheap mans media server that.

My old parts are only a few years old, the upgrade itch is too strong to ignore for me, though I did manage to sweat though cyber monday without spending several hundred pounds, which I was quite proud of. Jam it all in a padded case and noise isn't a problem. I hope the lack of fans leads to your set up melting, or even starting a small fire, Pags :fing:

You may as well pop Kodi on your desktop PC mate and get the full experience, if that cable is more or less there all the time anyway. Give it a whirl if you haven't ;)

You'll just need to add the fusion and xfinity app sources, but it's only a 2 minute job. Youtube will show you the sources you need to add. It's worth doing mate honestly. It's fun to tinker anyway

Yet you won't spend money on a cleaner. You're a geek, that's why you love all this tech.

It's a 2 minute job, yet the instructional video is 14 minutes long.

It was probably more a case of it going over their heads.

I'm not sure if you're being serious or not. I assume you are because you're not thick, but then it's not funny either so I don't know? :bl: you might have to help me there. The guy is waffling about all sorts, but the actual job takes 2 minutes

Can anyone recommend a good bourbon that's not too expensive? Want to treat myself over the Christmas period.

No self-respecting whiskyhead thinks of Bourbon as even being whisky. Which was perhaps what Smat wanted me to say.

That said, as pointed out above, Maker's Mark isn't unpleasant.

EDIT -- Oh noes! I've just realised I've left myself open for a Carelism! Cue a post that takes five minutes to decipher pointing out that anyone who claims Bourbon isn't a whisky enjoys picking low hanging fruit whilst listening to Baker Street.
