The Ornstein has spoken

Arsenal close to signing Gladbach mdf Granit Xhaka. Agreement reached on £30m deal, in London to finalise terms, medical this weekend #AFC

Very pleased if true, heard good things about him. Seems a bit of a mix between Alonso/Arteta/Coquelin which is ideal really, plus is a captain at a young age. Good for a red card but I don't mind us becoming a bit more cynical.

Telegraph are saying it's £25m rising to £30m. Good job Wenger.

I really hope his leadership skills are as good as everyone says. I love that he adds height to our midfield, it was desperately needed.

He hasn't signed yet and was bumping his gums about City not long ago; looks like a mercenary to me like Willian was when he came to England.

If he works as hard as Willian does and performs to a level like he has then I don't think the Arsenal fans will care.

A lot of clubs were apparently after Xhaka, it would be a coup for Arsenal to get him tbh, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if it fell through there at the last minute if PSG or someone like them came in for him.

Yeah but you're an idiot. It doesn't matter what you think.

I refuse to believe you're this stupid.

Would be very uncharacteristic of Arsenal to brief Ornstein about a transfer unless they were positive it was happening. It's happening.

Who partners him in the one of the two deeper midfield roles assuming Wenger uses the 4231?

So I'm idiotic because of what I have heard from Xhaka mentioning several clubs (not one Arsenal btw) he'd like to play for; and have seen players renege on deals in the past to move to someone else at the last minute? Ok then. I may be idiotic at times, but I'm not sorry enough to support Arsenal thank fuck.

I have no idea how defensive he is. Cazorla more than likely.

Arsene will find it difficult to sort his midfield out, but it's a good problem to have. I thought maybe put Cazorla in that attacking trio behind the striker with Elneny benched and Xhaka with Coq. If Wenger doesn't buy a striker and CB though he's really setting himself up for a lot of shit. But I think he's actually going all out this summer.

Saying that if Wilshere has a good Euros and doesn't snap then he's probably going to be in the side ahead of Xhaka. It's a good thing Arsenal players don't last very long before they have to visit the doctor otherwise there'd be a lot of peeved players in that mid.

Can just see Arsenal getting fucked over by not having injuries this time

I haven't seen much of Xhaka but I would very much hope he is an upgrade on Elneny and Coquelin, who have improved the deep Arsenal midfield line but not to the extent it is needed to be champions.

A top quality forward, and a partner for Koscielny and maybe just maybe they can properly challenge.

I would have said Arsenal's midfield is the least of their worries, the amount of quality midfielders they have is ridiculous. If they can get a top class striker and centre half I think they can win the title, but Wenger knew this last summer and failed to act on it.

I don't see us signing a defender whatsoever. I'd personally throw £30m+ at Real Madrid for Varane and partner him up with Koscielny but I don't see that actually happening unfortunately. He'd be perfect for us too.

I'm almost certain we'll spend big on a forward this summer but I'm worried it's going to be on somebody unproven like Morata. I'd take him, obviously, but I'd much rather have a Higuain/Ibrahimovic/Benzema.

Arsenal's biggest issue for me is the midfield, they can have all the pretty footballers they want but as soon as it gets difficult they hide away and do piss all. What they need is that player in the middle who's going to get stuck in and give 100%. Someone like Kante would be ideal.

Up front they have an issue, I rate Giroud highly and I think they play much better with him in the side but if he's out they're pretty light.

On an unrelated note, we could do with a French/Algerian right winger with a penchant for hair gel.

Just watched a 6 minute Youtube video of Xhaka so I consider myself 1FF's foremost Xhaka expert now. He's a hard bastard with quick feet and an eye for a pass, fine. People saying our midfield isn't the issue clearly didn't watch any of the many games we had Coquelin and Ramsey in the centre this season. An extra bit of quality to go alongside the returning Wilshere and Cazorla can only help.

Agree that we need a centre half and a striker. I'd prioritise the striker though. We can win the league with our back four if we score enough goals, and we must know enough about Wenger now to know that one player isn't going to be a defensive panacea. If Higuain wants a new challenge we should chuck all our remaining money at Napoli. Not sure he would after having such an amazing season tho.

Coquelin? He was the Kante of the Premier League two seasons ago. They're basically the same player.

Dahoud is better than Xhaka.

Lyon chairman just refused a £40M offer from West Ham United.

He's brilliant and all, but he's confrontational and outspoken, which is anathema to Wenger. Won't happen.
