Stockport County.
That's what he is isn't he. He is a number 10 and pretty much that's the only position he can play seeing as he's not a proper midfielder nor a forward. He'll guarantee about 15 goals a season consistently though which means most of his shortcomings are overlooked by managers.
Our other number 10 is Elliot Newby who we got from Chorley. He's like the polar opposite. He's tidy in everything he does in geenral play, links the play really well, picks up different pockets central and wide. But I don't think he's even scored a goal for us yet. End product is inconsistent at best. When he approaches goal, you just think fuck all will happen either way. Rooney is the opposite to be fair. If he gets a bit of space anywhere near the goal, you're thinking it's in to be honest. Don't get me wrong, he's great at what he does.

Laughing at the Wilshere rumour… although every surprising big signing has started like that in this crazy NL pre-season…

I know he played for you guys but his best ever season individually and for his team was with Barrow and he played deeper.

He’s also been a lot better playing deeper for us as well and the team’s a lot more balanced with him there too.

As you say he can be a passenger off the ball so there comes the problem against the better teams and that’s why we move him to the 10 but it never works.

That’s why I want us to go 433 put him on the right of the three, put around lots of pace and work rate on that side of the pitch and have a strong disciplined DM centrally and workhorse as the left-sided CM and negate his weaknesses while still allowing him to show his strengths.

Our manager is out of his depth so is just going to stick with what failed last season and it’s going to cost us promotion again.

You turned on Rusk then?

Got to say, I've never seen anything to make me a fan of his.

But at this time of year and with new season positivity, I feel I have to back the manager on day one whoever it is. If we start poorly and not at it with 10-15 games played, I will be prepared to call for a change, I'm sure of that.

Agree that I don’t think we’re going up.

On paper I think we have the best team in the league, it’s just not balanced. I fear we are going to be playing like a collection of individuals again just like last season.

I thought he did a reasonably good job last season and even though we didn’t play well against Hartlepool, we did miss two sitters and they should have had a man sent off and on another day would have edged a win so thought the criticism was harsh.

I had faith that he saw the issues we had last year with the squad he inherited and through our recruitment and a change of formation he’d rectify that and put his own stamp on the team. But it looks like we’re still going with 3412, we are still shoehorning Rooney in at 10, we’re still allowing Madden to drop deep, we’ve re- signed Walker and are still playing him in a role he finds awkward and overall we are still short of pace, power and mobility. Added to that we now have a quality winger that we’re not going to get the best out of and all of our CB options are right-footed.

I tried to ignore it at the time and hoped he was being coy but alarm bells started ringing for me when we signed Madden and JK asked him a tactical question about formation, how he’d fit in etc and Rusk basically said he’s quality player that stuff doesn’t matter.

Rooney typically played with us in a 3 man midfield. He was especially effective as Tom White and Lewis Hardcastle were mobile and could do the majority of the midfield running. Thinking back, it seemed like he was running through treacle when "sprinting".

I'm quite confident Grimes will be our best defender, but I also have doubts about Gunning and Kerr. We have Hollis, Maguire there and Carline who would do a job too though but hopefully we can get settled on what our best 3 is early doors! Grimes Hollis Maguire maybe for me
Grimes is fucking dog shit

Which is basically the opposite to us then as all our midfielders around him are as equally slow.

We've told Dean Furman we won't be offering him anything despite a string of impressive performances as a trialist. Be a decent signing for most at this level

Trialists so rarely get signed, particularly with the bigger clubs. Makes you wonder how many players managers would pass on if they saw them in training first.

Some are only used to bolster training sessions and manage minutes for those signed players in pre season

Very disappointing that is, honestly thought we were looking at our captain there. We must have another player lined up.

It’s potentially very good. Oyeleke is class, league player really, but long history of getting injured. Khan had a good end to the season with Dagenham and seems to have a lot of potential, as does Clarke who they had on loan from Villa and signed permanently.

Seems to be a bumper time for attacking midfielders really down here. You’ve got Rooney at Stockport who bangs them in as well as Whitfield who is great, Davies at Wrexham is exciting, Clarke and Mandeville at Chesterfield, Rodrigues and Roberts at Notts are our two standout players. Then there’s Barratt at Maidenhead, Balanta at Dagenham, Rees at Boreham Wood who are always in the goals as well.

We could do with you on our scouting team. I’ll have a word

Sounds like we've offered Dave Jones a deal.

We're being linked with Alex Hunt from the Wendies. Seems fairly well thought of by them, going off his limited appearances. Sounds like he needs game time, will be a loan signing if it happens.

Him and Coke just pretty much confirmed it on Twitter.

9 appearances in the Championship and highly thought of, seems a bit too good to be true!

Yeah, I'm fairly excited about this one. Sounds a bit Josh Bensonesque to me, which is exactly what we're lacking in the middle.

‘Too good to be true’ possibly a bit excessive for a young lad who’s only played a handful of minutes in professional football

No doubt he’ll have talent, and I’ve got a few SWFC supporting mates who do speak highly of him from what they’ve seen of him in the youth set up etc. Be interesting to see how he copes with the physicality of this league, as it is with any young player that comes into the NL… one things for sure, it’ll be great for his development as this league can either make you or break you (literally )

You guys thinking he’ll be a starter or more to bolster the midfield ranks? I’m not really clued up on who you’ve already got in there

If we're going 4-3-3 it's been looking likely that it'll be Giles Coke, Harry Clifton and Ben Fox in the middle which has lots of energy and tenacity but is lacking in a bit of guile and creativity so I think that's what he's been brought in for perhaps. Hurst has traditionally been cautious with youngsters unless they've looked a cut above, so if he is in the side then it's more than likely that he rates him very highly.

Reading comments from some of our fans is pure comedy gold.

Some proper Adam Virgo style nonsense!

Most of our fans would be happy for him to be a squad player for us, even in the Championship.

There’s no doubting his footballing ability, Barry Bannan and Garry Monk especially have raved about how good he is in training etc but he’s still built like a child which is what’s holding him back.

He does indeed look very young. Does he get stuck in or does he shy away from tackles? I feel like bulking up isn't necessarily the problem a lot of time, it's the desire to win the ball and not be scared that a lot of creative midfield type of youngsters suffer from. Also appreciate that you might not have seen him a great deal.
