Signed a 22 year old striker from Billericay Town. Scored 22 goals in the Isthmian Prem last year.

New contender for the Championship top goalscorers thread?

Usually players from those kind of footballing levels take a couple of years to get up to speed in the Championship. Vardy is a good example.

Could be a good one for the future though!

We did used to make signings like this fairly regularly. Do enjoy it though rarely they pay off. Generally we sign them from the 6th/7th tier, they play for our reserves for a season, go out on loan to league two for a season, then end up playing in the 5th tier. Last one like this I can remember is Brett Williams, 1 in 3 striker at Eastleigh. We loaned him out to Rotherham, Northampton and Woking before he settled permanently at Aldershot and was top scorer in the Conference, and he's just joined Stevenage. We seem to improve these players, but never at a point where it benefits Reading FC.

Apparently 6ft4 and lots of pace. Will be interesting to see how he gets on with our U21s this season.

Stephen Kelly out the door.Being offered a new deal but the club haven’t heard anything from Stephen or his representatives for a number of weeks now.Meh not bothered personally.Could do with an experienced LB though to give Owusu time to step up at some point if he is good enough.

Seen rumours on Twitter that we're signing Rudy Austin.

A bid of 4m from Fulham for Dunk banded around.
£4m is what I keep hearing as well
Keep 'em coming.

(Rejected again, apparently)

Elsewhere, we signed some Finnish u21 striker with another cracking name, Vahid Hambo. Looks to have a potentially frightening set of attributes, but is only 20 and seemingly expected to join the u21s initially so probably won't be resolving our goalscoring issues anytime soon..

Not really on-topic but I saw Ladbrokes are offering odds of 4/1 for Tommer Hemad to be Brighton's top goalscorer next season. Surely worth a few quid on that I think...

Not bad odds at all, cheers. We're still in need of major strengthening in attack, but as it stands he and Baldock look our best bet for some form of strike partnership. Even if they just manage around 10 each, it'll be a vast improvement on last season. Will have to see who else comes in.

One of the few likeable players we had last season. Shame that he has left, but as you said not a major loss.

Lots of reports in Sweden that we'll announce the signing of Lasse Vibe for £1m either today or tomorrow.

Striker/Winger, was top scorer in Sweden last year with 22 goals. Always a bit of a risk signing from those leagues, but seems to be a great signing at that price!

German reports also saying Hoffman is having a medical today and will join, £800k for that one.

Would be absolutely delighted if we could pull those two off.

We were close to Vibe in January. Well, I say close, we bid £1.3m and they wanted £2m which we didn't/couldn't match.

Can't say now i'm too bothered, after scoring 23 goals last season he has only scored 6 goals in more than half than of the current season for the team top of the division. As you mention, it's hard to tell how performances in the Swedish league will translate over to England. I'm glad we didn't take the risk as at 28 in his peak you should be expecting goals and consistency which he hasn't delivered. Could be good for Brentford, but on the face of it currently i'm happy Reading didn't.

Says a lot that he's available for £1m apparently, we've already signed one striker for more than that and bid more on two others. So money wasn't the problem stopping us from getting him, we seem to not fancy him as much as in January.

That's good to know, but worth taking a gamble on for £1m I'd say. Given he can play on the wing or up front, would be a good option to have in the squad.

Think Brentford have bought very well under this new model they're using, especially if they get Hofmann too. I'm fairly jealous in all honesty

Jack Harper signing for Brighton from Real Madrid is a weird one. He looks top class from what I've seen of him.

Looks good on paper, will be interesting to see how it fits together. A lot of players with no experience of English football is a risk.

I'm surprised how much money they're spending though, must be at about £5m now, without any sales to pay for them. Though seems to be a lot of clubs that are spending bucketloads this Summer. It's like everyone senses FFP won't be around much longer.

I think this summer has shown that FFP is necessary.

Signing some left back from Spain called Dani Pinillios.

Also going to offer contracts to (and presumably sign) Maynard and Paul Taylor who both impressed.

Other position needing filling is a midfielder, with Jonny Williams on loan our main priority. Fairly well stocked in the middle but he is a quality player so would have him in a heartbeat.

Jason Shackell to be signed up by the end of the week. I can't help but get exicted about this signing. I think he brings a lot of what we lacked last season, especially after Buxton got injured.

Some Burnley fans are declaring themselves not bothered and Michael Keane a better defender anyway. Therefore, I would say it's win-win for everybody involved.

No wonder we looked abroad for a striker considering how much a good striker at this level domestically appears to cost

We signed Darren Bent for nothing, probably not even on as much as Rhodes would demand, so it can be done. Strikers will cost a lot regardless of country anyway. Also, I don't necessarily believe that a striker's goal record tells the whole story.

I fail to see much of a difference between Bent and Rhodes either, other than age. However, Middlesbrough are in desperate need of a goalscorer and he's exactly that.

Rhodes will score wherever he goes guarenteed.

£14million down turns into £100million up if it gets you up.

Bent might've been free, but his wages certainly aren't... Probably only you and a couple of others could afford his wages

The only place I've seen his wages quoted, in the Telegraph before the article on the URL got changed, said that he's on 25k-a-week. He was on 18k-a-week here last season, so it seems reasonable.

That's £2.6m over the course of his two year contract - that's hardly eye watering at this level.

If we want someone, Sam Rush WILL get him.

Amazing to get Shackell back in assuming it all goes through. Extremely reliable ITK'er SDSR says it's 2.5m, with promotion bonuses.

Suddenly I feel much more comfortable with our defence.

It's Jason Shackell not fucking Fabio Canavarro!

Sounds like you're trying to convince yourselves as much as us that £2,5m on a 31 year old defender is good business.
