Why didn't a Premier League club actually go for Neves at £15m and £40,000 a week if he's so good? (I've never seen him play)

Liverpool, Juventus, Chelsea and Monaco all had a confirmed interest. We have his ex manager and his agent effectively running the club along with Fosun however.

I can imagine him leaving in 1/2 years if we haven't been promoted.

I'd also imagine he's being payed much, much more than £40,000 a week at Wolves.

Every source so far says we are indeed *only* paying him 40k a week, which is double was he was earning at FC Porto.

Whatever he's doing, it's probably not in Wolves long-term interests though, Tony.

I'd suggest bringing in potential world class young talent to our club is suggesting our long term interests are in mind though, Harvey.

Doubt it, but we lost 4-0 to Barnsley on a cold Tuesday night last season so I think we're fucked either way with that one

The reality of it though is that this agent couldn't give two shits about Wolverhampton Wanderers or there long term future. His only long term interest is to line his pockets with as much money as possible.

That's right, Mendes will be gone as soon as things go south. Which will be in 1/2 years.

It's all unsustainable, it's all awful. Pointing fingers at one club is very narrow thinking. If every club in this league went bust tomorrow, it'd be hard to deny that it was unjust.

At the same time though, I'm proud that Wolves is a self-sufficient club as such, and that our team is our own, and isn't a few borrowed mercenaries from other clubs in higher divisions. I think that's why if we do gain promotion it will look even better, as for the majority of the season we've done it with entirely our own squad and academy products, unlike other teams around us.

I sense jealousy

Do you still feel the same way?

I think most Wolves fans realise this will go tits up eventually but they might as well enjoy it, signing one of Porto's best players while being in the Championship is fucking hilarious.

It all went to pot for Pompey but do you think any of their fans have any regrets about their time in the Prem?

I like how North End currently go about things but we would all be buzzing our tits off if Hemmings lost his shit and started throwing £15m at players.

I can agree with this.

I would suggest that "most Wolves fans" certainly don't look at it that way. Are fans of any club happy for their club to be destroyed by profligate, wasteful spending? It's not usually simply a binary choice between this kind of massive spending and failure: plenty of clubs have proven that you can get promoted and stay in the PL without pissing out staggering sums of money. I look at a whole load of Championship signings in the last month and have been impressed at the quality (and very obvious value) of a lot of them.

We were within days of going out of existence in 1986 (you may remember that year in Preston as well) and were saved only by a deal to build a supermarket on our car park. I live in an area stock full of Pompey fans - and while they loved their days in the PL, they categorically hate how they came to be ruined. No, memories of a few seasons in the PL count for fuck-all when your club is just a memory.

I admit I have very mixed feelings about it all. I am excited by the Neves (and Miranda) signing. I will get excited by the other signings when I see them injury-free for more than a month at a time. It's one of those leaps into the unknown. If I saw substantial sums being invested in good quality players experienced in England, then I would be happier.

I agree with the commentary in the Independent: we seem to be parking collateral in a small side-street shop window awaiting for values to inflate. While this happens at many clubs with many young players, typically they don't break club records on signing those younger players who are almost guaranteed to move on. To what extent do certain people gain in **any** scenario? What's the risk for the agent? Is there any risk at all? Is that appropriate?

Asks the man whose club has spent £260m on players in 5 seasons and sold most on for £234m. What's wrong with another club doing the same?

You could argue that Wolves may well have a strategy that is similar only we're starting it earlier than you did. (i.e. while in the Championship)
