According to Pete O’Rourke, Aston Villa have tabled a £7.5m bid for James Justin.

That would more than double our transfer record. Wow.
Damn, was hoping we’d get him!

No way he'd go to Brentford. No offence but its hardly a step up. Leicester and Stoke also interested, apparently. Would like him to stay and I'm sure he'd love to. But money talks. So the next best outcome is a bidding war between the three interested clubs. A fantastic talent who is still improving.

Welcome to the Championship, the home of overinflation.

Been linked with Jamal Lowe by Sky, suspect this would have been serious had Massey not signed a new contract, but now he has we’ve probably moved on. Sky’s also linked Sheff Wed and Brentford with Morsy, they can both piss off!

He's not even the best full back at the club.
If £7.5m is being offered in May, I'm sure we could enhance some bidding war and push that up towards £8-9-maybe £10m.
We're now in land of big swinging transfer dicks.

To be honest, I'd have probably sold him if £4m was offered.

Brentford is a step up on Luton, might not be a bigger club but it's certainly a step up.

To be fair Brentford are now an established championship club. Credit to them. We are slowly but steadily rebuilding on and off the pitch. Both clubs will be moving to new stadiums in the near future and will be looking to progress to the next level. Justin will not consider Brentford a step up. He'll either stay or look to play for a club that will be in the premier league in the next year or two.

Would all you Luton fans class Watford and Bournemouth as a step up from Sheffield United?

And here's me thinking that MagpieBee was having a tongue in cheek joke. Does this tell us that this kind of comment doesn't transfer well to print, or does it tell us something about those who took it seriously?

Anyway, James Justin. Two years left on his contract at Luton. Options; have a season as first choice at hometown club Luton, where he is still living with his parents and very happy, or sit on the bench at Villa/Leicester/whoever*.

*Sorry, forgot to include Brentford.

I think/hope we've got a half decent chance at keeping JJ until January at least. Mainly because he is under contract for a few years yet and is a genuine Luton lad. I think we'll cash in on Stacey because he only has one year left and he's currently the better player anyway. If we can get a big fee for him that would mean we could knock back JJ suitors at least for another window.

Although if it goes much higher than £7.5m we'd be getting towards too good to turn down territory, I thought clubs might chance it with a lower opening bid than that.

Interesting summer for us really, even if we don't sell anyone (which we definitely will) we probably need 5 or 6 signings and if the full backs go we'll need to recruit very wisely because they are absolutely key to our way of playing. I like Dan Potts but he's not suited to the diamond IMHO as he gets a nose bleed in the opposition third in open play (great at attacking set pieces mind). No coincidence our amazing run coincided with JJ taking Potts' place in the team last season I think.

Wouldn't mind us going in for James Justin as cover for/ to learn from Matt Doherty. £4m seems good business but I'm guessing Luton would want more realistically?

He'd get plenty of game time at Villa to be fair looking at their full back options. He's way behind Leicester's first choices at left back and right back but he could certainly pick worse destinations, they don't have much depth in either position (Simpson and Fuchs will leave this summer) and Brendan Rodgers does put a lot of trust in young players. Plus there's every chance the bigger Prem clubs will move for Chilwell and/or Pereira in the near future.

I think he'd be an excellent fit for the system Wolves play but yes, I imagine we'll be looking for quite a bit more than £4 million. I'd hope we were anyway.

Now you’re in the PL absolutely not.

Are you for real, they are fully established premier league teams who will both get 45-55 points again guaranteed, paying 100m wage Bills

Yeah, we all know Gregory's going, but just copying the club's official statement.

Will be sorely missed, but good luck to him - was a solid pro and worked his arse off here.

Established Championship club, a history of improving young players and moving them on, the new stadium opening soon. At present they are a step up.

Yeah it definitely is, have to disagree with the other Luton fans in here. They may not be a "bigger" club in some ways but they are 5-6 years further down the line of a similar project to ours.
We haven't laid a brick in our new stadium yet - they move into theirs next season.
They can regularly sign players for 7-figure transfer fees - our record remains £750,000 set 30 odd years ago.
They are able to semi-regularly sell players for 8-figure transfer fees - our record remains £3 million* set 14 years ago (granted we are likely to break both of our records this summer).
They are an established mid-table Championship club, we would bite your hands off for 4th bottom every season until Power Court is built.

Put it this way, if there was an out-of-contract player and both Luton and Brentford went all out to get him in a two-way battle, Brentford at present would win that tussle every single time.

Having said that, they aren't a big enough "step up" to be in the running for James Justin, who will be looking at one of the very top Championship clubs at worst if he does go IMHO.

*technically I think the Andre Gray deal broke this with all of the add-ons/sell-on clauses, but in terms of a single up-front fee it's still Curtis Davies to WBA in 2005

Means nothing in the modern game when bigger clubs start waving the notes at them.

Cant speak for the other Luton fans but no I wouldnt. The scales are completely different finance wise so its not really a legitimate comparison.

This will, as usual get the bores on here saying that Luton have a billy big bollocks attitude (as I type weve got one!), without taking a single look at the context of the situation to the player.

Brentford are probably a bigger club at this point but what benefit is it to Justin to move there? He will likely get play time there, but he will definitely get that here. They might play a system that suits him, they might not but he knows we definitely play to his strengths here. They have a record of being a club that develops players and selling on to bigger clubs, but so do we. He might get a bump in salary, but would Brentford be able to give him a large enough one to make it worth his while? Probably not I would suggest.

Basically he is already at a "stepping stone" type club and in that situation, why would he move to another at this point?

In his situation if he is going to move it make sense to make the big jump, rather than a slightly smaller one - he already has built the reputation to get a big move.

EDIT: Just read JDs comment and he has said exactly the same as me just, as usually, in much better fashion! So ignore me at your leisure!
