Chris Kirkland and Chris Maguire have both turned down contract extensions, not surprised as both would be squad players and they'll both be after 1st team football at this point in their careers. It's a shame as both would have been good back up to call upon when injuries and suspensions kick in.

We also signed right back Jack Hunt on a season long loan from Crystal Palace yesterday, again suggests we may well be going with 5 at the back since we seem to be stock piling defenders. A pleasing signing for me, impressed at Rotherham on loan last season and certainly still has potential to develop. Also offered a contract to ex Holland international Demy de Zeeuw, a more defensive type midfielder with excellent pedigree. Obviously not as good as when he was playing in the World Cup semi final but he could be a shrewd addition at this level. Again though it's another holding midfielder which we seem to have a lot of, with Jose Semedo, Sam Hutchinson and Felipe Melo already on the books.

He's been training with our first team in pre-season, but with Keogh, Buxton, Albentosa, Shotton, Pearce and possibly Shackell ahead of him I don't see him getting much game time.

I'd say we've got quite a few players who would be available for loan and decent for Championship sides.

Rawson, Ssewankambo, Hanson, Calero, Thomas and Bennett could all well be available for loan and decent in the Championship. With young players it's hard to tell. However, Calero was the best midfielder I saw in the U21 Premier League tier two last season. He's a magician. I'd love to see him get a regular run in the Championship, in the right side I think he would do damage.

Hanson and Thomas are England U20 regulars, so I imagine they will be on the radar of a few sides. Rawson proved himself at Rotherham and Ssewankambo was playing first team football in Eredivisie last season before coming in getting injured and playing for our U21s.

Bennett had a torrid time at Bradford, came back to Derby and did this:

(second goal). He's always had potential, but he needs a platform to prove it now - badly.

I'd love Rawson back here, looked unbelivably good for a kid of his age and experience, was almost worth losing 3 points.

I liked Coady, but turning £350k to £2million after 45 games is top business by us.

What you'll get with Coady is simple, effective football who'll give you 110% everytime. A leader on the pitch and will captain a club very soon. Wish him well, had a solid season last season.

He's a defensive mid isn't he? I think he'll play well with McDonald in the middle of the park, might be wrong but they might have played together at Sheff Utd.

Although spending a large chunk of our transfer budget on a defensive mid wasn't what I was expecting, he does look a good prospect. As long as we get a decent striker to challenge Afobe and Dicko I'll be happy with our business.

For value, Darren Bent is a better freebie than Thorpe. For talent, then Tom Ince wins hands down.

Although Thorpe has enormous potential and isn't on a fraction of what they are and factor in size of club and it's a closer call.

I hope he gets a chance here. I doubt it, but he deserves it.

Assuming Shackell will sign, even if not Shackell then some other CB to be the main man, he will be fighting Keogh, Pearce, Albentosa, Buxton and Shotton for ONE space.

Hanson, who won our U21 POTY award, could be worth a loan too. He was selected ahead of Lewis Cook in the same position at U20 level.

In his last 105 Championship matches, he's scored 40 goals and recorded 28 assists. He scored 11 and created 2 in an 18 game loan spell with us last season and worked as hard as any Derby player I've seen at the club in the past decade.

There is no more proven or consistent winger at this level over the past five years. Not to mention, he's only 23.

Regarding Tom Thorpe, just saying but it's a bold statement to make to say someone will be the signing of the season when he's made 7 domestic appearances in his career, with most of them being sub appearances. Also has had a fair few injury problems for a 22 year old.

Bakary Sako runs him very close, They've played roughly the same amount with Sako having more assists, but Ince having a few more goals. Sako spent a year playing giants like Stevenage and Crawley though

On Tom Thorpe, having seen him play a fair bit over the past two seasons, he is a good player.

I said earlier that U21 level can be a very misleading representation of players ability, but Thorpe is certainly among the strongest defenders at that level. I would have picked him ahead of Blackett and McNair based on what I watched, but it doesn't always work like that.

I'd say Thorpe is more than capable of playing a key role at this level, but until he plays first team football week in, week out then it's hard to say. He's miles better than Michael Keane, for example.

Latest is that we're after Jonathan Bond (22 year old Watford GK) on a permanent transfer, and that we're also signing Lisandro Semedo (19 year old winger just released by Sporting Lisbon).

You don't get to be capped at all levels (regardless of amount of caps), be the captain of Man United's under 21's for a few years and have Man United fans genuinely baffled at your release and lack of first team opportunities with them by being a mug.

Good player no doubt, but I'd suggest there are quite a few better in this league. For one I'd take Odubajo over him every day.

To be fair Tom Thorpe has played at every level for the England youth setup as well.
