We signed Mads Frokjaer from over there last season and the guy is quality, so hopefully a similar story if this one completes. Obviously got Riis from over there too who is a top striker at this level.

Riis was on our books as an academy prospect, never even got remotely close to the first team. I was surprised when he came back to England and he’s obviously done well. Ironically, Timi Max Elsnik was in the same boat and it looks like he’s about to get a mega move to La Liga/Serie A.

All footballers below the very elite level seem to fluctuate wildly in form. We’ve all made signings that seemed nailed on successes, proven in the league, decent money and completely shit the bed. We’ve also seen players that have been called every name under the sun by fans of their former clubs and turn into brilliant players. Irrespective of where they’re signed from or however proven until they’re in your team, in that environment all of them are gambles.

We’ve had this with Hashioka who is a Japanese international that we signed from a side in Belgium so you have a certain expectation with that kind of pedigree. Being kind to him and there some mitigations for him but he has really really struggled.

Think also with the game becoming quite a bit more tactically advanced a lot of players are asked to perform quite unique roles that often aren’t transferable to a new team who are playing a different way. At a top level you see this with the England team and players like Foden who simply cannot translate to playing a new system.

Sounds like we bid for Harrison Burrows and won't be making a follow up bid after what was quoted.

I’d imagine we will be in the same boat RE Burrows. I can’t see Doughty hanging about so Burrows seems the logical replacement but I could see it being too rich for our blood even with PL money

If Alfie Doughty is to go however, the likes of Manchester United who are apparently interested, will need to bid between the £15M-£20M mark and I'm not overly convinced that someone will meet that valuation.

Its one of those transfers that doesn't happen before mid-August, if not around deadline day, and dare I say, Burrows will likely leave before the season starts. He is certainly someone who I saw in/around April time as a ready made long term replacement. Is he ready to jump straight into a promotion fight in the Championship?

We've had a couple confirmations through this morning, pending final paperwork:

Kenzo Goudmijn on a four year deal, fee around £600k/€600k (one of them). He's an extremely technically gifted young midfielder who has impressed in Eredivisie whilst on loan at Excelsior and has a good academy-level portfolio. He was part of the Holland U17 side that won the European Championships along with Crysencio Summerville & Wouter Burger who have recently played in the Championship. The low fee negates the risk, feel that even if he struggles with the transition to English football, he's at a good age and done enough to go back to Eredivisie and we can recoup the fee.

Arguably our biggest signing of the window, probably likely to be our best, is that Mat Ryan will join the club as our number one. Australia's captain, well on target to become their most capped player in history. A player with over 100 Premier League appearances, 300+ top flight appearances and the number one in numerous European campaigns (even as recently as last season) where he had one of the best goalkeeper records in Eredivisie. It's been a long, long time since we made such an established signing and feels like very much a statement. AZ qualified for Europe again and he's rejected 'numerous' offers from them to join us on a free - confirmed by sources in Holland. We had heard this was potentially happening last week, but genuinely thought it wasn't possible.

AZ Alkmaar only had a wage bill of just over £14m last season according to one BBC report which surprised me considering ours was £17.2m in League One with about 14 first team players in 22/23. Assuming he will be well compensated for leaving a side in Europe to join us but probably not as big as first thought. If we were paying him £30k a week, I’d not bat an eyelid. He’s a very established goalkeeper, already with a proven track record in this country, coming off a very good season.

The only source that I trust when it comes to wages is companies house - any other financial talk even if directly from the club I will always take with a pinch of salt. The £17.2m included the costs for all 177 employees, of which 58 were playing staff.

The clubs SCMP was actually one of the lowest recorded in League One - 42% - which came to £8.6m but that doesn’t include management, or players in a certain criteria which meant some of our highest earners left on legacy contracts weren’t included. We really didn’t have much of a squad either (12 players older than 21 and a lot of them didn’t really play much through injury or other roles at the club: Stearman, Chester and Loach) so the money we we spent on wages was a huge surprise, £17.2m on 177 staff is roughly £98k per annum average. None of the directors take a fee either, so really the only other real considerations were Stephen Pearce and the coaching staff. I suspect that Louie Sibley, most of all, was very well paid and the package to bring Warne and his staff to the club was substantial (in league one terms). I still struggle to make up the numbers, especially when you consider that Burton Albion (a League One club in a similar area) spent roughly £5.4m on wages for their entire operation. I know Category One academies are expensive to run, but still we only had 177 staff on our books.

I suspect this season will have seen us close to or even exceeding £20m as we added a lot of players and actually gave ourselves a chance.

The turnover of the club, despite not having a front of shirt sponsor, was still really good. Gate receipts and matchday revenue was close to £9m and we still had more than £20m turnover in League One.

Anyway, back to Langstaff, as I live in Notts and have seen him on a number of occasions, I’d be really surprised if he didn’t struggle in the Championship. He’s instinctive and a decent finisher, but the defenders at the levels he played at are awful and he gets numerous chances - in fact going off his xG he should’ve scored a couple more goals than he did last season. He’s not quick, nor technical enough, at least for me.

I’m trying to think of a striker who isn’t a target man and isn’t a quick who has been able to have an impact at this level.
