Can anybody tell me how the referee's performance was in the Port Vale vs Accrington Stanley game last night, please?
He was shit and congratulations on your 3 points this Saturday. Shrewsbury 5 port vale reserves and no strikers fit 0

There is an expectation of some back for this finally. Taylor's dead leg is expected to have passed so at worst Proctor and Taylor should be involved, likely starting which would be a massive boost and hopefully cure our problems of finishing!

Got a sneaking feeling Ellis will be back as well for this, the swelling was down enough to get his boot on last week so is back running now.

With them three back (Proctor gaining minutes all the time) and reuniting Ellis and Taylor we should look a different beast. Taylor at least shouldn't be rusty after only 2 weeks out.

He was about as good as the ref who let Marc Richards leather your keeper a good few years back!

The refs are getting worse and worse, every week we get another one who doesnt have a fkin clue. Something has to be done as its deciding matches without VAR and ruining the game

We've had Speedie a few times and no issue, the issue here I believe is he did the cup game between us last season and Coleman wasn't happy Colby Bishop get a red for elbowing Smith. Felt a bit like he had that in mind.

Similar to us having the same referee for both our games last year, it was obvious in the game at Vale Park he wasn't giving us anything, silly decision if there is history in the fixture having the same referee.

That Vale disallowed goal/red card and pen instead reminded me of the 06 Champions League final when Lehmann got sent off, although that wasn’t even a pen. Shows it even happens to the top refs I suppose. Just play advantage for a few seconds.

Whisper it but we had a goal chalked off on Saturday for the same thing as happened to Vale but we’ve not been quite so vocal about it. ;-)

Probably wasn't twinned with 90 minutes of total incompetence though. The penalty incident was the cherry on the cake.

Let’s just all agree the refs are shit in league one for us all. It does even itself out as we are all on the receiving end of it. I do believe that, although at the time it doesn’t feel it.
I’ve lost count off the ruined Saturday afternoons at the Pirelli thanks to shithousery by some Sunday league ref.
I could write a book on it, just can’t be arsed to post it on here. Well, that and the fact the other brewers - terraceman and earwig are no longer on this site.
So it’s just me. And you all don’t want to hear me whinge about all the time.

We cleverly make sure we hardly ever get in the opposition box or have any shots so we can avoid the stress of dodgy calls and such. No wrongly disallowed goals for us, thank you very much.

Yeah, wouldn’t be against that. I suppose the other thing is just to enforce the existing rules. I’ve said before if I was a ref I’d go into both teams dressing rooms and tell them in advance I’d be enforcing the six second rule on keepers and will blow for it at the first time of exceeding it and if it’s an outfield player will book them in the first instance without any warning. Bet the game quickens up then.

I definitely think it’s a good thing if the refs come down on timewasting at the first sign of it, it just sets the tone better that way.

Obviously we’re one of the worst offenders for it but it doesn’t mean I think it’s a good thing.

I did actually see one ref do it fairly recently when we played Bristol Rovers at home on Boxing Day, oddly they got done for it before we did (as they went ahead early doors) but they got an early booking for timewasting, as did we when we tried it on later (having gone ahead). Good.

Lets be honest, who would ref a league one match for £80?

In the lower leagues of English football, referees are given a match fee of around £80 as well as expenses incurred through hotels and travel. And at the grassroots level, amateur referees typically earn between £20 to £40 per game.

Bit like us with VAR last season in the Premier league.

Hardly remembered it being used in our games as we never scored really and most of the goals we gave away weren't a problem.

They are part time I think aren't they?

I just think refs are too scared and worried about the reaction if they started dishing out bookings and red cards for time wasting or adding loads on - get accused of being fussy and running the show.

But if those are the laws then they ought to.

People might learn and wise up.

At 9-a-side under 12 games we're paying £26 for refs. 11-a-side matches are £36 and expenses are only incurred if the referee has to travel more than 30 miles to the game. This is up to u18 level only.

I assume it goes up as they go higher up the Leagues.

The £80 match fee was taken from this recent article

And unless it's written badly, I think the OP was right. It does seem a staggeringly low amount of money. It's not entirely clear if referees at league 1 and league 2 level receive a 'salary' but the way that article is written suggests they don't, although some referees appear in all of the leagues so maybe the salary is paid to all?

I assume its £80 match fee on top of some sort of base wage maybe?

Yeah I just adjusted my post. The article is a little ambiguous to me. It clearly states salaries for Premier and Championship refs but then just refers to a match fee for league 1 and 2 referees. But I agree, there must be a basic wage for all I would have thought.

Looks like Premier League has a retainer salary so must be something similar.

Championship ref's get £600 though so surely £80 is way too low.

Back in 2015, it was about £300 for reffing a National League game. Slightly less for a linesman and less again for a fourth official.

Every team gets poor decisions against them, we just seem to be on a real run of them at the moment. I can't recall the last time we had a half competent referee. I'm amazed that Clarke didn't lamp him one, he looked seething.
