You did.

It's no coincidence your form picked up after actually making signings, Tomlin, Matthews, Odemwinge, O'Donnell etc...

The fact you improved after changing your lineup from the one you got promoted with proved my point.
We hardly signed anyone either though

It wasn't through the lack of trying though bud. Unrealistic targets maybe but we certainly did try to sign additional players. I don't see that being 'disrespectful to the league' WTGR.

That's half my point aswell.

Who comes up from league one and tries to sign a play off sides top scorer? It's like Wigan tryign to sign Forrestier, Martin or Hernandez.

Not comparable. As daft as it was bidding £9m for Gray, he played for Brentford and we could offer him more here than what he was already on. Martin and Forestieri play for bigger clubs who are very wealthy, and Hernandez is playing for a side who have just came down from the PL who just cost them £8m.

Hopefully, we've learnt from it bud. Looking back it does seem a bit daft, especially to outsiders. Small steps etc etc. I wonder if we would be perceived to be in a better position to buy a Gayle type player now after a year up here and the stadium all but finished? We're obviously going to throw some wedge about this summer judging by the noises eminating from the club or rather we are in a position to do it.

You don't know that, you're acting like Brentford are paupers, they're owner is minted from what i can remember, owns a Danish team too, Ciderup, sees my point and I'd imagine most others can too.

Should have gone all out for Bradshaw or someone of that ilk.

They'll be PL teams after the likes of Gayle, he showed his quality to any lower league PL club what he can do Saturday.

Of course I see your point, I've been very critical in the past on here of how we conducted ourselves in the summer, but do you genuinely think that Gray would have been on big money having signed from a non-league club?

In JJH's defence, Brentford DID accept our bid. It's not about belittling another club but maybe more that City were a bit naive, hence the appointment of Mark 'DNA' Ashton at the club as the Head of football operations. After all, we don't want to make the same mistakes this summer.

I think we did actually at some point but ran out of time before the window shut.

I'd imagine he was a decent amount, yes. You don't pay £1m plus for a player and give him league two wages.

It's not just about money though: why would Gray want to leave a club at the top end of the league for one at the bottom end?

He didn't. He, by all accounts, had already agreed terms with Burnley but came to talk to us out of professional courtesy. I would imagine we would have offered more than Brentford were probably paying but wages wouldn't have stopped him making the (proven to be right) decision to go to Burnley.
He was proven correct and good luck to the lad.

Hence why it was a daft attempt with clubs like Burnley who are receiving parachute payments were sniffing around him. Think Hull were in for him at one point as well.

As daft as it sounds you made your best signing the January before in Johnson.

You did sign 3/4 from Man U and a couple of loanees.

You've got a point, we usually do our main business in January. Grayson's summer signings, bar a few exceptions have been underwhelming.

We signed Pearson & Grimshaw from United in January who I expect to play a big part for us next season. Last year we brought in Beckford and Johnson who improved us massively and the season before we added Paul Gallagher & Neil Kilkenny in January who both had big impacts.

Our form picked up before signing 3/4 of those players, it was near enough as soon as we got rid of Cotterill and the ditching of 532 that our form started to turn around, no doubt Tomlin, Matthews and Odemwinge helped continue the form but to say they were the cause of our change of fortunes is wrong.

Congratulations and welcome.

Good to see some new, well informed and level headed posters in here. Certain Wigan fans should take note!

Cheers Justin.

Looking forward to welcoming Jimmy and Nasser back to the Pirelli and seeing how we fare against him. Same goes for Rowett and Warnock actually. I can't remember the last time (if ever) we came up against a former manager in a competitive game.

All 3 of them will get a good reception in my view. We have faced Nigel Clough in a few pre-season friendlies and he has always got a tremendous reception from the fans.
They all served our club well and the fans won't forget that.

Thanks for the warm welcome all - Looking forward to next year although I'm sure it will be a bridge too far but you never know.
I'm sure we will claim a few scalps
On the way even if we do go down.
I'm no fan of clough but he got us over the line.
Will be nice to visit some top grounds. Especially villa, and maybe Newcastle..if Sunderland win later

Cloughie hinted there will be a small expansion to the ground, I suspect some temporary seating in the corners. We only have 2000, seat tickets are going to be like gold dust next season. Away end expansion probably won't happen straight away, I suspect we'll see how the season starts.
Without a shadow of doubt, we are the smallest club ever to reach tier 2 for a very long time, it has taken 109 years for us to get back here following Burton United's demise (we did have 2 league teams in tier 2 a very long time ago). We were after all the smallest team in League Two when we first were promoted 7 years ago.

I think the last time a Burton team played Newcastle United (Burton Wanderers) we beat them 9-0 :) I believe this remains Newcastle's worst ever defeat. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burton_Wanderers_F.C.

How has Mark Duffy done overall?

I noticed he has been a virtual ever-present in L1. Suspect Nigel Clough will want to keep him?

He can be a match winner but can also be incredibly infuriating. Reminds me in some ways of Maghoma until Rowett got hold of him and gave him the kick up the arse he needed. He likes to take players on but I think he lacks a little bit of killer instinct when it comes to a final ball. Can't take a free kick or a corner to save his life but he's scored some worldies and some incredibly important goals as well. Undoubtedly made an important contribution to our promotion.

Clough will want to keep him as he's settled in well here. I'm not entirely convinced myself that he's good enough for the championship but we're not exactly in a position where we can reject players we already know we've got a chance of getting in search of better ones and I'm not a football manager either so what do I know. Saying that Wigan are apparently interested since he's now out of contract. I'd imagine they'll offer him considerably more money than we afford to pay him and he'll be closer to home up there so we'll see.

I was at Norwich last night when they went down, and cruel though it may be to taunt other sets of fans for their team going down (I personally found it fun, it's banter which is part and parcel of football) to just hear that chant "Burton Albion...on a Tuesday night" was amazing, and hopefully not too disrespectful sounding to Burton fans! (It may end up being a nice hot end of season game in the afternoon sunshine anyway with both sides celebrating promotion/survival...)

The fact that other teams know who we are is amazing, happy for teams to chant that. The best one was when Walsall fans were singing "Burton Albion we're coming for you" was awesome to hear.
We'll be using our status as massive underdogs to our advantage again as we did this season- it took until Jan/Feb before we were taken seriously in League One. Our home games will be key next season to our survival, it's going to be a tough place for some teams to come to, it's a very small ground that will be packed to the rafters next season, and I'm hoping it will be a bit of a leveller as FA Cup games sometime are...that said in all honesty I have no idea how we can survive next season. In League Two we were head & shoulders above the other teams, in League One this wasn't the case, there is no way we'll survive without significantly strengthening.
