True Detective season 3 oversees a welcome return to the quality of performances we witnessed in the first season with McConaughey and Harrelson.

Mahershala Ali fresh from his acclaim for his tour de force performance in the quite excellent Green Book is brilliant as the ex LRRP turned detective.

8/10 for the first two episodes but I have an inkling those marks will climb with the plot twists that are yet to unfold.

Totally agree, I think already there's a much greater sense of confidence in the show, and it feels like Nic Pizzolatto has got his mojo back. There's a very clear set up, well-drawn characters, and a real sense of purpose about these first two episodes.

Season 2 was a mess and suffered from some dreadful miscasting (Vince Vaughn as a gangster, Taylor Kitsch as a repressed homosexual, David Morse as a hippie!), so it's nice to see that Season 3 has avoided that.

The opening two episodes were very solid. They bordered on dull a few times, but I'm a sucker for anything that uses unreliable narration, and the narrative structure they've built so far lends itself very well to that. My continued interest will depend on what they do with it.

Season 2 of The Punisher is now available on Netflix so will be binge watching that sometime soon.

Just finished season 2 of Fargo which I very much enjoyed. Watched half of episode one of season 3 and couldn’t get into it but may have tried watching it too soon after season 2 so will give it another go sometime.

^ I didn't feel Season 3 until the third episode, but I think it's probably my favourite. Much better than Season 2 and at least on par with Season 1.

But I think your gut feeling is correct: one of the most appealing things about Fargo is how different it is to every other drama on US TV, and the charm of that is probably lost if you binge-watch seasons back to back. Take a break and watch something else.

13 predictable episodes of Jon Bernthal stomping around as a blood-drenched, gun-totting maniac might do the trick.

Just watched episode 6 'Twin Cities' of Counterpart series 2. Its basically an informative jump back to a time when the crossing evolved and how the distrust between the collective known as 'the management' was generated through a series of failed experiments and the cost of not factoring in basic human frailties when compensating for loss.

Its comfortably my favourite series at the moment ,its extremely well written and the performances of the cast are all exemplary.

Counterpart is a clever what if experience, introducing us to this world with flair and confidence. Character actors of a whole other level, it's out of the top drawer this series.

Recently watched Bodyguard Series 1 (2018) 8/10

A surprisingly good show considering it was associated with the BBC. I'm not too familiar with the BBC these day's but a word in my shell-like ear advising me to take note, it's worth a watch. I'm glad i did it was a bloody good show, sublime acting from Richard Madden as war-veteran David Budd who is a specialist protection officer assigned as a bodyguard to Julia Montague (Keeley Hawes), the ambitious and powerful home secretary. Starring Richard Madden, Keeley Hawes, Stuart Bowman, Tom Brooke, Claire-Louise Cordwell and Vincent Franklin.

Talks about a Second Season with Richard Madden coming back. If that worked it would create an opportunity for a third or fourth.

Recently finished watching DC's Titans 2018 (Season 1) bizarrely had 11 episodes. 7/10

Unsure whether the writers forgot to produce a 12th episode. The show is great overall really enjoyed season one (except for the finale). Looking forward to see where they take it? There were a few bumpy patches in the beginning of the series but it got better and better as it progressed when Titans focuses on it's characters. Starring Brenton Thwaites, Anna Diop, Teagan Croft, Ryan Potter, Minka Kelly, Alan Ritchson, Lindsey Gort, April Bowlby and Rachel Nichols.

Well, they haven't done much with it all, but it's held my interest nonetheless. Slow-burning but engaging detective story and outstanding acting by Ali, Dorff and McNairy especially. Works for me.

Last week's episode was the best of the series.

Recently finished Season 2 of The Marvelous Mrs Maisel (10 episodes) 10/10

All the amazement of the first season remain flawless, the outstanding production and costume design, art direction, and music direction, the dialogue that fizzes like a sparkling wine and performances are absolutely top notch. And the jokes, oh my god, It's great that they are hugely funny. It probably wouldn't work if they weren't. Funniest show around and Brosnahan has quite a presence. Starring Rachel Brosnahan, Alex Borstein, Michael Zegen, Marin Hinkle, Tony Shalhoub and Zachary Levi.

Bit late to the Fleabag series 2 party – the first season left me a bit cold and I had to be badgered into watching the new episodes – but I’m really enjoying it.

Was the first series this assured and it just caught me in the wrong mood (sometimes I have very little patience for heavily melancholic comedy), or is Phoebe Waller-Bridge just getting better with experience, practice, etc.?

Anyway, watch it if you haven’t already. As a darkly comic portrayal of grief, it’s about a billion times better than Gervais’s latest.

I thought the first series was a bit heavy in places and close to the bone the first time I watched and I think it was because I went into it thinking it was just going to be a fairly standard BBC sitcom. Have since mid-series two binged the whole first series again and I didn't really feel the same about it on second watch. I enjoyed it more the second time. Have you seen Matthew Collings went to town on Twitter about it?

I'm interested to see if...
...they go anywhere with this whole breaking the fifth wall thing.

If memory serves, I was in the midst of a rather nasty depression when the first season aired on BBC2. I won’t bore you with the details – I mention it only to point out that ‘sad’ comedy is a bit hit or miss for me when I’m not in a good place mentally. Sometimes I feel rather cheated when something advertised as fun actually reinforces or heightens my sense that life is inescapably messy and disappointing, and that people can be total shits. Sometimes, of course, it goes the other way and has an oddly therapeutic effect, but that’s not what happened with the first series of Fleabag. I watched the whole series but was glad to see the back of it. And it’s difficult to say, 30 months later, if that had something to do with the show (balance of comedy and drama slightly off?) or if the show was on a hiding to nothing because I just wasn’t in the right frame of mind for it at that time.

Your thoughts are interesting and have convinced me to give it a re-watch on I-player once the current season is over.

No, I’m not aware of Matt Collings’ take (and couldn’t find anything in a 5 minute search), but I’m guessing it was too middle class for the old boy.

Have to thank you for this recommendation. Thoroughly enjoyed this, great series.

If I’m honest I hated the pilot, it was trying too hard to be funny. But once it got into it I couldn’t wait to watch the next episode.

Season 2&3 already signed up by Apple

I watched a good doc on BBC the other night about Herbert von Karajan. My father used to love him and his rendition of the famous second movement of Mahler's fifth is my favourite version. Interesting personality and colourful being a member of the Nazi party though he did that apparently not out of love of Hitler or the party, but conductors wouldn't get work unless they were; and it dogged him constantly afterwards. Some good stories about him from former players in his orchestras.

I've just recently finished 'The Handmaid's Tale' Season 4 - Fantastic show starring the impressive Elisabeth Moss.

Now I've switched to 'Yellowstone' Season's 2 & 3 - Nearly finished Season 2. I've gotta say it's pretty decent viewing starring Kevin Costner.

Just binge-watched 'Lost in Space ' Season 1 & 2 - Pretty decent family adventure with the Robinson family.
I've read somewhere the series was renewed for a third and final season.

Just recently finished 'The Witcher' Season 1 - It follows a monster hunter played by Henry Cavill, as he fights his way towards his destiny. I shall definitely be watching Season 2 to see the luscious Yennifer played by (Anya Chalotra).

Which is exactly what it did unfortunately, first 5 episodes were great than a lame as fuck last one goes and ruins it, really disappointing.

Getting pretty addicted to Chefs Table on Netflix currently, each episode tells the story of highly rated chefs from around the world and how they came to be where they are. It’s not as foody as it sounds, it’s more about ‘the journey’, but it’s great.

I'm on the penultimate episode of The Book of Boba Fett - it's no better production than The Mandalorian, but it's a really enjoyable watch (especially if you're a Star Wars fan like me)
