A lot of clubs once had names that were more appropriate for when they competed in local leagues against teams from the same city. We were called Shaddongate United, which made sense when we were just one of a few Carlisle clubs and competed against other clubs from other parts of the city. We changed our name to Carlisle United in an attempt to represent the city in regional leagues, feeling it would increase our chances of getting accepted. I'm sure a lot of clubs are the same, but others line Tranmere and Port Vale never did that. FGR did change their name to Stroud FC once, but it didn't last long.

The former owner of the pub called The Bedford by Rock Ferry station owned all variations of any football club called Birkenhead and wouldn't sell them apparently. We have had this name for over 120 years. No point changing it.

Slightly back on subject but I have just noticed that Tranmere has an affinity to teams from Gloucestershire:

• In 2015 Tranmere were relegated to the NL alongside Cheltenham [Gloucestershire]
• In 2017 Tranmere were Wembley promotion finalist against FGR [Gloucestershire]
• In 2019 Tranmere secured promotion to EFL 1 via play-offs by beating FGR [Gloucestershire]
• 2021 Tranmere are one of the firm favourites for promotion alongside Cheltenham [Gloucestershire] & FGR [Gloucestershire].

I would be happy if that affinity remains solid for rest of season and all three of our teams are promoted.

Well they might end up replacing Bristol Rovers...

We're not on a great run. Two defeats and a draw from our last three games. Honestly I just can't see it any more. I expect we'll put in better performances than those last three but can't see us building up the head of steam to keep up with teams above us.

We still look very rusty. First half was decent but then I didn't think Salford were that good either. We're not bad, we just don't look like a promotion challenging team at the moment and I've got a bad feeling that we'll carry on like this for the rest of the season. Anderton at least didn't give away a silly penalty today, so that's progress.

Not going full HG, but we've become an unknown quantity in the promotion race and that's a significant step down from where we were in January.

So i guess you have watched Exeter stagnate for the past 40 years.........you have that mind set.
