Except I was confident of us winning the league before pre-season, so it makes no difference, and bear in mind I have never been confident of coming close to winning the league in our previous 5 seasons despite other town fans thinking it. I said after the play-off final if we kept most of the squad together and signed a couple decent strikers we would win.

Pre-season games have only added to that opinion/optimism not been the cause of it.

Nothing wrong with a bit of optimism pre-season, but being confident of winning the league seems a little over the top to me. I suppose the main flaw in your Grimsby will walk the league theory is that you are forgetting that other sides might be much stronger than last season too. Forest Green, Eastleigh and also Tranmere all have some decent players and the resources to further strengthen as the season progresses.

We were shit hot in our 98 point season, a better side than Barnet last year, but didn't go up.

I didn't say we would walk the league, I said we would win the title (that could be by one point), and yes of course those sides are a threat, but they are not exactly Fleetwood or Crawley who will walk the league whatever other sides do. I don't see any side that will be as good as them, and despite what signings other sides have made I still think we have the best squad on paper. We have had one of the best defences in the league the last few seasons and have pretty much kept it in tact and have improved our weakness with signing what look like goalscorers on paper (whether they are remains to be seen, but no reason not to believe that right now).

Eastleigh are following the FGR model of signing strikers and ignoring the defence. Tranmere have Brabin and signing players that will go horribly wrong when they have a bad patch. Our main threat I see as FGR because they seem to be getting their act together with regards to where they have gone wrong in the past and finally starting to learn from that, but are not blowing others out of the water like Crawley and Fleetwood did, so don't think they will be strong enough come the end.

Our youth side lost on pens to Grantham, shame but the worst thing the Lincs FA did to this comp was allow it to carry onto in the league season, so not too bothered we lost, neither is Hurst seen as he put a youth side out for it.

Shocking, Hurst out!

Losing a penalty shoot-out again, this one hurts as much as the last time!

Not that I blame Hurst, but isn't it against the rules to field a weakened/youth side?

Sounds about right but Hurst was pissed off at the fact Grantham wouldn't agree to a suitable date for the fixture so he's sent the youths to spite them. It's ruined our list of Ws on our form now so jokes on us.

Don't think it's just Grantham messing us about, reckon if the final was before the season starts like it used to be, he would have taken it more seriously.

I doubt we were ever going to send a full stength team whenever it had been played.

Since the Lincs FA have relaxed the rules on the team you can put out it was only ever going to be our yoofs I reckon.

Its a good job we didn't send the first team, two of our players came back with broken bones! An ankle and a foot.

I mean one is an effort but two is a huge effort on Granthams part, well done to them.

Final friendly before he season starts today, away at FCUM to compete for the supporters direct cup (or something)

A lot of people I've spoken to were going to go until it got made all ticket and people could only buy one each. Nonsense decision.

Should be a good run out anyway and hope for more of the same from the last two games.

FGR 3-5 Plymouth. (Jones 6, Frear 14, Parkin 31 pen) (Jervis 32, 61, Reid 36, Boateng 52, Sawyer 72)

We threw away a 3 goal lead to lose 5-3 at home to Plymouth last night, with both teams taking the game more seriously with strong starting xi's and fewer substitutions. Entertaining game, but the way we collapsed once a good Argyle side got going was a bit concerning.

We've got another game away at Cirencester today.

We beat Exeter 2-1 last night. A good game, albeit after a slow start where City scored after less than two minutes. Good to see a plan B formation in action too, with the injuries to Luke Young and Kellerman, a lad from Wolves I believe we were close to signing on loan.

We had Ryan Brobbel on trial last night, and made a good impression. All in all, we aren't going to be pretty but I feel it could be effective.

Had our final pre-season friendly cancelled by Stoke, they've decided to take pretty much all their players to Germany for a tournament. Instead we've been able to get Congleton over for a match with 10% of all gate receipts going to the funds for the recent tragedy of the collapsed mill in Bosley. Nice touch from the club.

Who were you more impressed by? Us or Exeter?

That's because you've done the classic money bags thing, bought a tonne of forward players and neglected your defence.

You lot and Eastleigh will never learn.

Exeter, but that's because I prefer their style of play. They kept the ball very well last night, but Cox has us quite solid defensively as a unit. Neither side has cut through us at will to be honest, although I'd say Exeter did cause us more problems than your lot. Felt Adams has got you built solidly from the back and with the two big men upfront you will be a threat aswell.

Final friendly away at AFC Wimbledon today. Still have no idea why we've got to play them there, but that's by the by.

Cirencester 3-0 FGR (Bennett 29, 71, Griffin 55 pen)

After shipping 5 at home to Plymouth yesterday, the rest of our squad were well beaten by Cirencester today. Good to see Charlie Griffin again, predictable that he scored.

Long trip for the lad. He was on trial for us against York on Monday night.
