Michael Portillo said in June 2012 that Gove could be a serious contender in a future race for the Conservative leadership, though Gove had said in an interview a few months before that "I'm constitutionally incapable of it. There's a special extra quality you need that is indefinable, and I know I don't have it. There's an equanimity, an impermeability and a courage that you need. There are some things in life you know it's better not to try."

He's clearly changed his mind about this self-professed limitation.

Officially listed as five standing now.

The contenders:

Stephen Crabb
Liam Fox
Michael Gove
Andrea Leadsom
Theresa May

The first ballot of MPs will be held on Tuesday.

Also, one suspects that Johnson will just run for leader when he thinks the country would be easier to manage.

It's between Gove and May, with the former taking it I reckon. A thoroughly depressing time to be a Brit. A Tory party in power that doesn't give a fuck about anyone who earns less than £100k a year, and an opposition in the process of killing itself.

Remain campaigner might need to call a GE to get a real mandate. Cross party majority of other parties backing remain, could be a second referendum by stealth..
