Lorry ploughs into a crowd in Nice injuring a number of people (more local reports say there have been fatalities)

Some form of terrorist attack given the reports of shots being fired and the lorry travelling at high speed?

The police have confirmed it as a terrorist attack and there may be gun men on the loose

What the hell is wrong with some people?! What sort of sick individual do you have to be to walk past dead and injured people on the ground whilst you concern yourself with filming them?! Disgusting.

Political Correctness is one of the largest fallacies I have ever witnessed in my life. This absolutely bizarre belief that "Islam is protected", as if criticism a) isn't allowed and b) subsequently doesn't happen. Islam is criticised constantly, almost daily, Muslims are characterised and derided constantly.

There is absolutely nothing stopping anybody in this country from criticising Islamic ideology, nor is there anything stopping people deigning to cast judgement on foreign policy and domestic assimilation of Muslims either. Considering the staggering popularity of rags like the Daily Mail and other publications which discuss Islam the idea "you can't" is demonstrably false.

The reason for continued Islamic terrorism isn't political correctness, it's the reddest of red herrings.

Political correctness has downsides, it creates strange ideological attitudes of it's own, but it isn't preventing some "great debate" to be had about Islam and how to tackle extremism. At worst, it's some excessively sensitive teenagers and professional twitter activists calling you a bigot, the simple reality is people are free to discuss the issue, if you can't take the criticism equivalent of a gnat biting a rhinos arse for doing so you shouldn't be debating anyway. Where they get shouted down by a much broader demographic is when their argument amounts to "them there sand niggers and goat fuckers need to piss off back to their shit holes and leave us alone the backwards bastards", it's not constructive criticism by any stretch.

Most people who tout out the "PC gone mad" line are people whose criticism aligns more closely to the above than GENUINE constructive criticism of Islamic theology or Middle Eastern geopolitics, nobody of any substance is going to shout you down if you're making reasoned arguments which don't just tar people with the same brush because generally, they have nuance or they're clearly discussing the theology, not "anybody who subscribes to it de facto follows every tenant."

PC hasn't gone mad, neither has humanity.

We're just having to confront out startling capacity for violence, hatred and butchery more often in a part of the world where life has, for most of us, been protected from these evils.

What happened in Nice is an absolute disgrace, those who perpetrated the attack are vile scum, those who would be inspired to commit similar acts are also vile scum. What is the solution? I don't know, I'm honest enough to admit I don't have all the answers, perhaps the saddest thing to come from this is the inevitable circular arguments from both sides of the predictable aftermath of any terrorist attack even faintly involving Islam.

None of it gets us anywhere, unfortunately. People become more entrenched and bitterly argue with one another despite most wanting the exact same thing, an end to extremism. Perfectly innocent Muslims are made to feel less welcome, more despised and further ostracised, which just allows even more radicalisation.

Everyone gets just that little more afraid.

Rinse and repeat until we get "Insert City Here RIP version 8000" and go through the same process.

People saying they're sad on social media or using hashflags or changing their avatar is fair enough. I guess it helps people show solidarity when in reality they can do shog all. Not sure that it has anything to do with political correctness.

It has fuck all to do with it to be brutally honest.

As you say, it's a simple out pouring of a human beings essentially limited capacity to enact much difference to the situation, a symbolic gesture that they at least give a fuck about what happened despite being completely powerless to affect any meaningful change, often due to not even being a citizen of the country affected.

Perhaps it feels repetitively tedious at this point, but then again I'm more bothered that social media is having to provide these functions on a consistent basis as a result of slaughter.

In its own small way, the hashflag is a part of a larger problem. Assigning 'good' and 'bad' roles to various actors makes the problem simple, and the solution even simpler, when what we actually need is nuance and context more than ever. It's a geopolitical nightmare: hard to understand and even harder to explain. If ISIS are the bad guys and France/Belgium are the good guys, then it stands to reason that those countries should buddy up and go to war in Syria and Iraq. This is what a lot of people believe and it's hard to argue when the prevailing narrative is so reductive.

Is it known to be a terrorist attack. ISIS are claiming responsibility for most of the recent attacks, so is there another source that confirms it?
It doesn't need to be connected to a terrorist group for it to be a terrorist act.

"Terrorism, in its broadest sense, is defined as the use or threatened use of violence (terror) in order to achieve a political, religious, or ideological aim."

Why did this person drive into the crowd as he did? I don't think it is too much of a leap to suggest that this person carried this out for a political, religious and/or ideological aim. I think its fair to say this was an act of terrorism.

We are and whilst there have been a few of these unfortunate events in the past 12 months, serious progress is being made in Iraq and Syria.
