Dreadful performance I actually think we look worse than last season.
What a load of fucking shite.
We had nearly 70% possession and were only 50 passes short of big Dave's ideal of making 600 passes 'art form' . It's like watching England play sidewards passing around at the back though .

Thought Fleetwood looked ok , doubt will be play-off contenders but probably mid -table . They looked threatening 5 or 6 times , whereas we didn't at all after the first 20 minutes .

Let's hope Cheltenham are bad next week .

Well, first Notts team sheet of the season and we are officially beleaguered. If you’d told me 3 months ago Adam Chicksen would start the first game of the season I’d have assumed our squad had been hit with a Harchester United type tragedy

I actually slipped a quick tenner on us to get relegated when I saw that team sheet, Chicksen dearie me.

As everyone’s said I thought it was a promising performance with plenty to build on. The defence and keeper looks day and night compared to last season. I thought we were pretty wasteful from wide positions, but it was good how we dominated the final 30 mins given it looked like our fitness looked dodgy pre season.

I’ll let Maynard off for playing Jones on the right cos he didn’t have much choice, but I’ll point out that Tranny’s best chance came from him losing the ball after cutting inside for the 8th time.

Tranny looked a bit sketchy, not sure my pre season optimism for them looked really warranted.

Wasn't great but I don't think it's any surprise, we're a work in progress with a fair amount of players and adopting a system that the existing players weren't using at the end of the season. I'm prepared to be patient and don't expect us to be decent yet.

What was frustrating though was the total and utter lack of urgency. Packed away end making a racket and you're giving them absolutely fuck all. Fleetwood won't get many easier home wins than that all season.

Desperately missed the bite Thompson gives us, we look very susceptible to a bullying which is something that's been a concern throughout the summer looking at our squad.
Agree.

Straightforward journey which was a positive. Lacked urgency.
Thought Fleetwood were equally as poor, but they won’t mind after taking the 3 points.

Madness to think that was only our third win in 2024! Almost forgot what it felt like!

Encouraging first game for County, should have won. Colwill looks class for Cheltenham.
A draw was probably a fair result, but once your lad went off injured you sat back and let us in.

A great first half today, end to end stuff. Newport came out and got straight in our faces. It took us 10-15 mins to get on a level footing, but then we scored and the game was fully turned on it's head. A few mins later it's 2-0 and we're cruising. Annoyingly, we then give away a penalty (in real time I thought Payne got the ball, but if you go to the ground you give the ref a decision to make) and Newport were then let back in the game. Their equaliser was awful defending from our part though.

Second half was a bit of a nothing half given what happened in the first, until the last minute of course.

God it's good to have league football back!!

EDIT: it was a clear pen

Really solid if unspectacular away victory but the sort of victory we will need if we want to be at the top end. Worked hard, clinical when needed and defensively really solid. Salford look a very poor outfit, but you can only beat what's in front of you. I'd take another 29 of those. Plus, we had probably 4 or 5 starters not in the squad today, so that kind of nullified our creative element.

Scored 4, hit the post and crossbar too but I can’t say it was a comprehensive display. Lots to work on still and the loss of Maxwell in the first game isn’t great

Thought MK we’re gonna walk it cos they signed loads of players?
Still will. First game of the season blip. Should have at least got a draw today but fair play Bradford for grafting for the 3 points. Team still gelling but good early signs despite the loss.

Two incredibly poor sides at Holker Street today. Both keepers barely tested yet we conceded a scrappy goal and then decided to pass the ball sideways and backwards and hoof it diagonally for the rest of the game.

Lankester and Hemmings were terrible. The entire midfield a disgrace that barely got into the game. Why we gave Conor Thomas a 2 year deal I'll never know. He's finished and has been for over a year.

Our rut from that game where we imploded vs Morecambe looks set to continue as we have a genuine fear of shots on target. I appreciate that we're a few players short and have a fair few out injured as well. But Christ that was a hard watch. Some creativity and attacking impetus would be nice.
It was the same as the final 3 months of last season. Still early days so we have time to put it right, but it's difficult to get out of ruts in football.

Thanks for confirming it wasn't a dream. The last time we won an opening game or even scored, we had Methuselah in midfield.

Well that wasn’t too shabby as a start in League Two . . . . .
Welcome to the football league. Very early days I know, but I think you will do just fine.

Have you made any notable signings in the summer or are you going with more or less the same squad?

I see we host you in 2 weeks. If you are travelling north yourself for this one, you will find the vast majority of us are a very welcoming bunch and the bars in the North Parade area of town are the ones to head to for pre match pint and banter.

Are you sure we can't give you a little money towards utility bills and council tax if you're not gonna take any rent pal?

As the other Crewe fans stated, it was a desperately poor performance from us against an average Barrow side who on that evidence won't be troubling the top half. It might be game 1 of the 24-25 season, but for me that was game 16 of a stretch going back into last season from the start of March where we looked eerily similar to yesterday. No energy, no intensity, no creative spark and no shots on target.

Bell needs to find some answers and quick, especially with back to back home games coming up.

Agreed. You can't take yesterday's game in isolation, however tempting it is. As you say, it was exactly the same as the end of last season. I think we will improve, but that's easier said than done. It's very difficult to stop the rot, and lots of good managers can't do that and end up out of a job. I'm not saying Lee Bell will end up that way, and I back him to get it right.

What an interesting first game.

A worldie and a fluke deflection in the first 5 minutes cost us but after that we were definitely the better team. Given that we have so many new players I'm not too disheartened. The connection will definitely come as games go on.

Fuck Graham Alexander though, that guy just won't leave us alone. Was shit for us and now he keeps beating us.

Well. First game back in the football league and it felt like another game in the national league. One team playing football the other hoofing it to some big lump. Shit referee and a random thunderbastard from a player that should have been sent off.

Football is back!

On to the next one.
