I always find it easier to go via Hammersmith. So, Bakerloo line Marylebone to Paddington then change to a Hammersmith & City or Circle line tube to Hammersmith.
It's about an extra 10 mins walk, but there's one or two pubs around Hammersmith (seek out the Crabtree next to the river) that are likely to be a little quieter than the chaos around Putney Bridge. Straightforward walk down Fulham Palace Road from the tube station.
I'd second this, I always used to go via Putney Bridge until the last few years they've started shutting the pubs after the match, literally every pub is shut for a couple of hours after the game, and the way they organise Putney Bridge station is ridiculous. Every man and his dog will go via Putney Bridge, if swigging shit beer in plastic glasses surrounded by twats is your thing then go for it, for a better day out follow the advice above
