If clubs or fans take the competition competitively then fair play, but the cup itself isn’t a competitive cup.

Firstly bookings accrued in this still only count in this whereas bookings in the fa cup and league cup are different, secondly you’ve got sides in it which aren’t recognised. Stoke under 23s aren’t a club.

It’s sad for the cup but it’s how it is.

They don’t count towards the league in the LC or FA Cup now either. Benning has 7 yellows for us this season but only 4 in the league and hasn’t missed a game yet.

This tie has become farcical for us and has just created problems. The only way we can save face is by not turning up.

This is not a real potteries derby even Stoke fans will admit this. They’re turning up to take the piss as the big fish. It’s patronising that we are forced to play their under 21’s.

I hate Stoke with a passion but I can’t drag myself to go to this. Imagine sitting there watching Stoke fans taking the piss in OUR stand after winning the game?

Football is becoming a joke and I’m afraid our once great club is too.

Come to the conclusion that the only real answer to this is to move the game to their midden. At least then they can all turn up en masse and sing their songs about us etc and no Vale fans will be there still and eliminates the segregation issues which are going to happen.

They brought that in to stop players getting a 5th yellow on purpose before a cup game.

Red cards in League/FAC/LC mean a suspension for any of those competitions, reds in Checkatrade only apply for Checkatrade.

Guessing they must have changed the rules this season?

Either way, any fan that thinks beating stoke under 23s (not picking on them on purpose) is a competitive game is off their rocker

I'm sure every Imps player who played against Chelsea U23 in the Checkatrade Semi last season saw it as competitive (if for nothing else because those players earn significantly more than any EFL2 player) with a Wembley appearance to add to their memories.

Whether it SHOULD be part of Checkatrade is a different discussion- and I can bet every Stoke U23 player will know exactly what it means to pull on the Red and White and play against Vale.

Opinions will differ on this one but this game, as Newcastle U23 vs Sunderland would be, is one of a few which, for a lot of fans, the competition doesn't matter- playing the "auld" enemy does.

And good for Lincoln players. The fact is its not a competitive list A. Game and that’s that, whether you get to go to Wembley, fly to the moon or become prime minister.

So Smurf has gone back on his word, predictable. Any sales on the day? Gonna be interesting this.

Nope. Only Vale season ticket and ten game package holders can purchase tickets and the Paddock is now open only to Vale fans.

Any Vale fans who are found to supply tickets to Stoke fans will receive a severe club ban.

Fair play to Smurf on that at least.

Interestingly any revenue from the Hugill second instalment and ticket sales from this and Sunderland apparently will now go on January so we should have £1,000,000 to spend... see how that pans out!

Curzon Ashton....and Carlisle
why don't vale just whack out an entire reserve squad with the vale manager saying he's just made it a reserve fixture, even if they get fined if stoke fans are turning up it funds the fine.

then fixture just dies a death, neither side gets any gloating issues because both sides can then say it was 'only the reserves'

seems such an easy way out of it.

We’ve generally made five or six changes and Aspin said he will continue with that. Pope, Legge, Manny, Whitfield for example haven’t featured at all.

Issue now is Smurf has seemingly played a blinder by saying on Saturday he would open the Paddock (the main home stand) to Stoke fans it caused uproar and now he’s stopped it, promised £400k in January for Aspin plus whatever we make from this tie it’s stirred the homes fans who now the Paddock is open to Vale fans want to make a point in sit in their seats.

I can see an 8,000 crowd for this now which isn’t really the aim of the boycott!

Interesting that the Lardies see an under 23 game as so appealing. So clued up on their kids that they will go in home ends and are demanding 10'000 tickets.

Absolute farce, we all know the reason they are coming and it isn't football related.
Maybe The Incinerator won't be big enough to cope with demands for tickets if they beat us and they may have to play at Old Trafford such will be the demand for tickets.

Really pleased they rate their kids and Fat Charlie Adam so highly.

2800 Vale fans now have tickets so 6900 in total as it stands. Set to be highest of the season. EFL got what they wanted with this tie.

Money wise we won’t do much the amount of police, already closed the Vale Social and the local park and Hamil Road. Looks like chaos expected.

Sticking to my guns and not going though!

Good for you. You just know that Harvey will be knocking one off about this though.
I'm going to the Christmas Market on Tuesday.

We are just selling tickets in one stand for Tuesday. So maximum will be just under 2000, though I suspect (and hope) it will be less than half even that. The lure of ten pound tickets and Steve Evans isn't that great I guess

Stoke fans making themselves look utter billy big bollocks selfish twats.

this is supposed to be about fans of smaller sides taking a stand against b teams and also being generally shat on by the elite as usual. Not petty local shit.

Comes back to my original point- whether it's Celtic v Rangers, Newcastle v Sunderland, Vale v Stoke, City v United etc etc. There are occasions where the local rivalry outweighs any regard for the competition it happens to occur in.

The Vale/Stoke rivalry is fierce and very local and there hasn't been a competitive game (yes, I know it's an U23 Stoke team) between the two sides for over 15 years.

Whatever it is "supposed" to be or we think it is, it isn't when local rivalry is added.

God forbid, Newcastle U23 draw Sunderland....

Its their cup final, mainly because they have failed to beat us in the last 7 or 8 derbies and had to chew over the last defeat for 16 years that this is the best they can get.

Sad thing is Stoke City like Port Vale have a rich history in this competition before the U23 farce.

So the EFL/Harvey have won then, just make sure there's local derbies and all common sense/integrity goes out the window. Way too easy to manipulate us peasants it seems. Looking forward to Vale v Stoke U23's being a regular league game soon, maybe even on Boxing Day if yer lucky.

But that the reality of football- don't see any dissenters that lower league clubs (through players on loan) are used as outlets to keep fringe players from the PL and Ch match fit but that is the reality and is no worse, or no better, than U23 being in a lower league competition (or certainly the rationale isn't).

Will never get away from club rivalry and the chance for Stoke fans to lord it over Vale fans (whatever we may think) was never likely to be one which would pass by quietly particularly when they haven't met in any competition for over 15 years.

To be honest, I never expected to ever be able to watch Macc in a competitive fixture away at Newcastle Utd.

Would be a dream should it ever happen.

Looks like Big Sol knows more about this level than we've given him credit for. 9 changes tonight, playing a pretty much full reserve team!

Checkatrade Trophy? Big Sol knows the score.
