Clubs in this league in size order

'38 years of mainly hovering around the bottom 2 divisions' and we still get by far bigger crowds than a club hovering in the Prem for 38 years or whatever.

Historically successful clubs with low crowds = Very small.

Historically unsuccessful clubs with large crowds= Big Clubs.

That makes us bigger than Coventry, substantially bigger than 24k to Wembley Preston and on par with Bradford behind SU.

You were better supported for one season where you was top of the league for most of the season and yet still you failed to sell out for the majority of big away games. Seriously, no one agrees with you in this thread. It's obviously Cov and Sheffield United joint biggest but I would side with Sheffield United.

We've won more than you but that isn't that hard.

We've had way more seasons in the top tier than you.

We've averaged more than you for about 40 years (I'm guessing) apart from one season where the 2 clubs had contrasting fortunes.

I think you're getting a bit confused. Being a good/decent football team doesn't make you big (see Wigan). In fact, I just had a look at a Bristol City forum to see if they are this deluded and surprisingly there not. Most of your fans agree you are the 6th biggest club in League 1 all factors combined last year. Either this whole forum and 95% of your fanbase is incorrect or you are. I know which one I'm siding with.

Bristol City's crowds are crap in relation to the size of the city and catchment area, especially considering Rovers are shit.

Same can be said for Bradford and Coventry, really.

Agreed but it is what it is. £20-25 for a ticket to watch two shite teams kick the ball in the air for 90 minutes with a poor atmosphere.

Aye, it's shite, more clubs need to follow Bradford's pricing model but it's not really viable if you're eager to get out of this division.

Can i just add we are the best supported club in the country to of never played in europe. Also the best supported club to of won fuck all in 90 years. And only been in the top division 5 out of the last 40 years yet still get the crowds we get. No one can argue with that if us and coventry were both in the top division for a sustainable period i believe we would get much bigger crowds than them. I dont think were a big club but i think our support is pretty good considering all those things and the fact we have another slightly bigger club in the city too.

Much bigger crowds? Coventry City fans turn up for big games. I'm guessing we'd sell out for your big 6 and local games with Villa and Leicester. For the lesser teams we'd probably have 26k? Not being funny but if a historically non league club like Hull can get 20k+ each home game then we would easily.

Sheffield United are very well supported though, no denying that. However, I've noticed they are much quieter and less partisan than their neighbours.

What the fuck are you on about? Never been out of the league, majority of our history is equivalent of Championship level. If you're going to lie to try and big yourself up make it a bit more subtle.

My bad. I had a quick look at your crowds in the 80s and 90s (3-5k) and decided you must have played in non league.

Nicely done. I predict at least another 3 pages now before this thread dies out. Also, no 19?

What crowds do you think you'll get next season? I can't wait for our yooooof getting excited about Milwall away. In fact I remember my first trip to The Old Den. Eventful day that was. I think it may have been Psycho's first game for us and we won a penalty in the 80 odd minute when it was 1-1. Milwall had it right in for us day and there was a lot of pre match talk about how they were going to do us in. Anyway, Stuart Pearce stepped up and hit the most blatant penalty miss ever. I'm still convinced to this day he missed it on purpose so we all got out alive! :D

As I said on another thread, it depends on how well we go in the league. Somewhere between 9k and 11.5 average I should think.
The New Den is nothing like the old. Unless there's serious bad blood between the teams the atmosphere is often flat and rarely does it have the same fear factor the old place did.

Decades of mediocrity don't inspire large attendances unfortunately, which you're finding out. Even with the bounce of returning to your own city and the bumper 23k gate (counteracting the two nuneaton games), the attendance average decreased from the last year at the Ricoh. Hopefully you'll turn it round.

You do realise our away support travelled the furthest last season? I dont think opinions can be incorrect either but I look forward to Cov rising above their current shocking crowds to prove your point next season.

I'd set off from Scotland every game mate if it meant my club would most win games.

It weren't Nuneaton. It was Northampton. Also, the crowd was 28,000 against Gillingham but some seats couldn't be opened up because of short notice.

Hopefully we can turn it round. This is the most optimistic I've been for a while now that we'll have a good season but we're Coventry City. We don't do promotions.

You don't honestly believe this do you? I've been alive for 38 years and all Bristol City have ever done is hover between mostly the 2 bottom divisions. Honestly, I couldn't even name a player who played for you in the 80s or 90s.

Let's be honest that following at the Ricoh was a one off. I swear you didn't sell out for Chesterfield or Bradford away when you were already promoted.

You haven't even played in the top tier since the 80s have you? Sorry mate, I like Bristol City but there is no way on earth you are bigger than Bradford, Preston and most certainly Cov.
I found that comment of 'hovering between the bottom 2 divisions absolutely hilarious.

I believe we have had only 2 seasons in the 4th tier, and are historically a lower end Championship club/high end L1 club.

And FWIW - we've always travelled well to the Ricoh, and I too have read your fan forums and they seem to be overly respectful of our support, considering that Coventry is considering a close away game for us - which tells a story in itself.

1978 was the last time we played in the top flight.

Arguably we may not be a bigger club than Sheffield United and arguably Coventry (IMO we are,) but we certainly have the potential to be the biggest club out of all of the clubs in this division if we got to the PL - and our venture to Wembley for the 'mickey mouse cup' certainly proved that.

Do you just make up these facts as you go? If you're gonna troll try and make it at least half reasonable.

Are you taking the piss? Bristol City have never and will never be bigger than Coventry unless something drastic happens.

None of your fans think so and no one on this forum does. Bristol City bigger than Coventry. :lol

Well you have won the JPT more times than us so I have to concede that one to Bristol.

You've never won a trophy with any prestige. Never played in the Premier League. 9 seasons in the top tier ever. Averaged less than us apart from 1 season with contrasting fortunes. I just don't see how your coming to this conclusion unless you're on a massive wind up.

For what it's worth, both Coventry and Bristol City fans clearly think they are bigger clubs than they actually are.

A bit of success has gone to the City fans head, and Coventry fans are blinded by history despite being absolutely shite since the turn of the century and having not won anything in 50 years.

Bradford City average more fans than both ffs, and have been in the PL, yet get discarded completely?

Coventry are a pretty average L1 club nowadays, they deserve to be here, and they get what? 7-8k home fans a game?? Hardly screams massive.

I remember in 2007 when Bristol City beat us in the FA Cup and the headline in their local newspaper the next day was 'HEROES'.

You seem to be mixing size with success. Using that criteria we are currently bigger than you.

Put us both in similar circumstances and we're a bigger club than Coventry.

I don't buy into this 'you've never played in the Premier League' bullshit - the Premier League was just a re-brand, it's no different to the old Division 1, so no, we may not have played in the 'Premier League' which is the modern era, but in the past we have been in Division 1.

We have a bigger fanbase currently, and a potentially bigger fanbase. Bristol is a City made up of half a million people - the catchment area is absolutely huge, and Bristol City have always been labelled as a 'sleeping giant,' because of what we could potentially could be, and you have to take that into account.

And - if we're playing the recent game regarding the Premier League, when was the last time Coventry won anything substantial?

I can't even remember the last time they achieved Promotion!

A sleeping giant? Well, first you have to be big in the first place whereas Bristol City never were. There is a thread on your forum saying you are the 6th biggest club in this league and everyone agrees with it on there.
