20k ground, 50 seasons in the championship, we are massively underachieving

We were ripped apart by 15 odd years of indescribably horrendous management and the fan base is still fractured

Not to mention Stoke is the smallest city to host two professional clubs, and those white lightning swigging dole dossing bastards are somehow in division 1

Also it is a seriously economically deprived area which doesn't help

Does it worry you that Stoke are developing into a top half Premier League club? Do you think it could lose you future supporters?

Although stoke supporting females pop out 11 kids each for the dole money the population rate is kept proportional by most of them dying at 30 from glue and alcohol poisoning aggravated by morbid obesity

Also Coates will snuff it soon which will have interesting effects
HAHAHAHAHA :fl:

Portsmouth are no bigger than City, Preston or Bradford
Of course they are.

Few years in the PL, won the FA Cup and even in L2 getting bigger crowds than all of those 3.

What criteria do you use that makes you 'bigger'?

Can't wait for Stoke's long overdue return to the lower leagues where they'll get 11-12K max the delusional, fickle, unappreciative bastards. Nothing sickens me more than seeing Stoke shirts in Crewe, hardly happened when I was growing up.

They won't be in the lower leagues for any time soon I'm afraid!

The only clubs we're probably bigger than, as such, are Crawley, Fleetwood, Yeovil and Rochdale.

Then I'd say we're just very similar to sides like Crewe, Scunthorpe and Walsall. Rochdale are pretty similar too, other than that they seem to have spent near enough the past 60 years in the fourth division, whilst we've been in the third tier more than we've been in the fourth tier.

To me the clubs are in four different categories.

Coventry, Barnsley and Sheffield United who have spent a large portion of their recent history in the top two divisions.

Bradford, Preston, Bristol City and Swindon who are historically lower Championship/upper League One sides.

Rochdale, Yeovil, Crawley and Fleetwood who are historically League Two or, in the latter three's case, non-league clubs done good.

And the rest of League One's clubs who wouldn't look out of place in either this league or League Two.

We're bigger than Barnsley.

Sheffield United are bigger than Coventry, quite a bit bigger imo.

Coventry have spent a long period in the top flight and won the FA cup in the 80's yet they still don't get bigger crowds than the Blades, regardless, even before all this SISU shit.

While it appears I have an axe to grind re Bristol City, I have to say I'm not in favour of FFP.

They are lucky enough to have a wealthy owner and if he wants to chuck millions into it he should be allowed to. It's just about the only chance a 'smaller' club have of making it to the PL.

Surely nobody wants to keep seeing the same clubs forever yo-yoing in and out of the PL - it's bland enough as it is.

There should always be a chance for a plucky newcomer to gatecrash the fuckers

You are correct. We had quite a poor home support during the Prem years, probably due to the fact people got bored of constant mid table finishes.
We actually had crowds of 20k-23k when SISU took over, they dropped by 1000 each season till we got relegated and then they dropped to 10/11k. When we moved to Sixfields, most thought that the crowds would be higher when we moved back, which unfortunately hasn't been the case. It seems like we have lost a lot of people due to that move.

I agree, our fans are pretty shit. People will make all the excuses for it, lack of success, SISU etc. but less than 10k even in this league is terrible for a club who try and claim to be 'big'.
I think we have a generation of supporters from the 70s,80s and 90s who only ever knew us being in the top flight and have bailed out at the first sign of tough times, then try and excuse it with 'can't bear to watch the club they love playing the likes of Crawley and Fleetwood.
Personally I think our fans are an embarrassment at the moment, particularly considering a lot of the fans who bailed on us are now going to watch the franchise Rugby team at the Ricoh.

and despite all that, you're still the second biggest club in the league which doesn't say much for the rest of us.

I really do struggle to acknowledge a club with lower attendances on occasions than non league Rovers as some kind of big club, irrelevant of how many years they finished a few places above the line in Premiership.

Portsmouth on the other hand, fantastic support and certainly bigger than us at the moment.

We're not really a big club in the grand scheme of things, its just is comparison to 99.9% of clubs in this division including yourselves we still are at this current time.

I'm not really sure where you are coming from with your Bristol Rovers angle, other than Sixfields we've had better attendances than both Bristol clubs for the majority of our history.

1) Sheff Utd - by a mile IMHO
2) Coventry City (spent plenty of time in the top flight, won a cup)
3) Bristol City, punching below their weight given the size of the city
4) Preston North End
5) Bradford City
6) Barnsley
7) MK Dons
8) Swindon Town
9) Doncaster
10) Port Vale
11) Chesterfield
12) Peterborough
13) Notts Co
14) Oldham
15) Gillingham
16) Walsall
17) Orient
18) Crewe
19) Scunthorpe
20) Yeovil
21) Rochdale
22) Colchester
23) Crawley
24) Fleetwood

Not far off what I'd have done. Had I been inclined.

Not to mention shitty season ticket banners that they placed in Crewe a little while back now.

All stoke fans I seem to meet are all below the age of 18 and generally don't appear to know anything about the football club itself before 2008.

I yearn for the days where Stoke were getting thumped big, and I mean big. 7-0 vs Birmingham was a particular highlight where they gave Peter Coates (now proclaimed as their saviour after he bought them back) death threats and drove him out the club. The 8-0 reverse vs Liverpool was also a highlight. Then in League One they were calling for Gudjon's head after Cambridge and struggling Luton ran riot at the Shitannia. Bastards got a lucky win in Cardiff that season and have never looked back since.

I knew when they went up to the Prem it'd be a long time before they came back down, they get a lot of luck those Clayheads.

Sheff United are the biggest, no contest there. Coventry second and probably would be biggest if they drew in similar sized crowds.

Bradford, Preston, Bristol City and us are all very similar, hard to place one above the other. Depends what aspect you view as most important. Recent history it's probably us, past history Preston, current crowds Bradford and Bristol City, and they probably have the most potential for growth based on population size. All have similar sized stadiums and facilities. MK Dons have tons of potential as well and draw in crowds similar to us and Preston.

After that I'd place Donny, Posh, Vale, Gillingham at a push together and Crawley and Fleetwood are obviously the two smallest in the division. As for the rest, god knows.
