Micky's Mellons, I think in the Mahon situation we did get some money when Blackburn bought him. If Stockton does wonderfully in his stint at Hearts and is sold to an English club while in contract, we should get something.

Stockton is a player who really needs a manager who'll boost his confidence. Given Cole hasn't stayed with us, wonder if Micky will regret preferring him to Andy Cook in the play-off run in.

Third signing in as many days as we announce the signing of Chris Sharp from Bradford PA. Have to say I am underwhelmed with this one but good to see us continuing bring in personnel.

No, because Cook is under contract and will be here next season anyway. Mellon had to put an arm round Stockton to persuade him to come back to us from Morecambe, so it was always likely he would prefer Cole if it was a straight choice between the two.

You had Cook, a player in decent form, voted player of the season, who was left out for 'work-rate issues' and never paired with Stockton until a futile last throw of the dice in the play-off final, by which time Cook had understandably become rusty. Now Stockton's pissed off north of the border anyway, so no long-term gain for Rovers.

Cook and Stockton could not play together as they were too similar, as the performance against FGR demonstrated.

I prefer Cook but I doubt he would have scored more goals, or we would have been promoted, had he played in the final games. There is no 'long term gain' (although we did not know Stockton would be leaving for definite) but there was no short-term loss either.

Personally, I am happy that it is Cook that is staying. I think he is the better player and Stockton's funny relationship with the club and supporters would always have been hanging over him.

If stockton scores goals in the spl it will demonstrate what an awful league that is

Son of Graeme. always had talent and has had the odd peak here or there but is WPL level at best

Well Craig Curran scored goals in the SPL, so there's your proof.
Good luck to Cole north of the border, sure to score past Fon Williams if nobody else.

I don't think you can draw many conclusions from the 15-20 minutes they got together in a game that was slipping away from us. Stockton and Cook were our best strikers during the season, so ought to have been given game time together to see if a partnership was feasible.

Think Fon Williams has been released by Inverness, so he might not get the chance

Basic football knowledge tells us that two big men who both come short for the ball will rarely work well as a strike partnership. Mellon obviously thought so, which is why he never played them together.

Rarely is not the same as never though. Micky must have thought there was some prospect of them clicking or he surely wouldn't have tried it at the tail end of the final. Still, we'll never know...

As you commented yourself, he only tried it when were two goals down in a play off final with half an hour to go and we were desperate. Which says it all.

Stockport taking a punt on WPL Newtowns Jason Oswell. Has been reasonably prolific the last few seasons and am glad someone is taking the risk on trying him out

Isn't he a bit of a cry baby though......?

Bobson is an odd player. I doubt there is as Crawley fan who doesn't wish him well. He is best summed up by saying he doesn't know what he is going to do so how can the opposition?

Expect him to get up and down the pitch, take on a player but lack the confidence to really do much.

I hope he does really well and a little thought. We kept him but released Rory Deacon.

Hmmmmm. Sharp was a bit crap for us, and 5 goals as an ever present for BPA doesn't suggest he's got any better.

I'd expect him to be and bench warmer. What a contrast to signing Craig Disley!

Can't say I'd heard of him before yesterday, but 51 goals in 91 games including 22 last season seems promising.

Agreed. Not a great signing. Hopefully we announce further additions in the next few days who are an improvement on Sharp.

I can remember when we signed Chris Sharp for a month on loan. They were the (bad) days.

So we've made our first signing to take us up to give players (woo hoo). Danny Mills who left Whitehawk last month.

Pleased with that.

Interesting one - Maidenhead have signed striker Chinedu McKenzie from Isthmian Division One North strugglers Romford FC. Scored a hat ful for the past couple of seasons at a struggling side.

He's probably on £50 a week there given the pay-off he's likely to have had at Eastleigh!
