Grimsby and Tranmere currently are the teams to beat for me, on paper at least. I don't think you can call Mackreth the most outstanding player in his position though, have you not found him to have 3/4 great games a season with many many more where he can't even beat his man?
Gowling has been class every time I've watched him play against Macc and Mckeown is usually reliable.
Liam Hogan is a brilliant signing for Tranmere as long as he stays fit, best centre back at Macc last season for me (aside from Pilks).
Not quite as drastic regarding Mackreth. He did struggle beating his man at times, especially earlier on in the season. However, he grew into the season from what I saw/heard (other Town fans feel free to correct me on any of this) and I think during the last month and a half or so of our league matches he was one of our best players. I think during the matches at the start of the season in which he wasn't performing he was very poor. However, he seemed to kick on and improve after being left out of the side at times. When he was being quiet towards the middle of the season, he seemed to be at least contributing more overall even if he wasn't flying down the wing like his clearly capable of. Had a disappointing playoff final, though.

How many times did Hogan play for you?

Oh give this a rest. You kept banging on about how if you'd kept that formation with Neilson in it all season, you'd have won the league. Then it was "if we had the team at the end of the season all season you'd have won the league." Now this.

You were the 3rd best team last season. Deal with it. You might be the best team this coming season, you might not.

The amount of Grimsby delusion is just boring now.

Hurst said himself that he'd have won the league with the set of players he ended with. Our form from January supports that theory.

I've more than dealt with that fact, but the two sides better than us last year are no longer here. Tranmere will be a huge threat, the point that is being made is that we don't need to strengthen too much so people shouldn't look into things too much. It's not that much of an earth shattering thing to suggest is it? That the third best team in this league last season have kept hold of all but two of their starting 11 for next season and I'd not take many of the players in this league over them.

Richard Tait has just signed for us, looks a very decent signing.

Unfortunately though, you can't afford to have the start that you lot had and still win the league. Ours was bad enough and in truth cost us the title, but you lot were fairly inconsistent until October-ish. The league is ruthless like that, and despite the odd slip up Barnet were far and away the most consistent side throughout the season. Even after January I'd argue we were slightly more consistent than you lot (would have to check the stats) but that counts for bugger all cos the title winners are good throughout the season.

I think Grimsby are looking strong this season, but that's no good if they don't start playing well until October. Same with Tranmere et al. To be honest after Moult has left Wrexham, I think the main three contenders look to be Grimsby, Tranmere and Eastleigh (bit behind the former two though as I'm sceptical about Hill), but we'll see.

Great news today, we've re-signed Chris Lines from Port Vale, he will be a real force in this league, we may only have signed David Clarke from Woking, and Chris Lines but we're got Jermaine Easter to come back and Stuart Sinclair added to one or two more, I think we've got the makings of a top half team

It's quite sweet how Grimsby are so full of confidence really. Some of us have lost play off finals as well as had second place finishes before so we don't get so carried away with it all. I suppose we should let them have their fun before the league kicks off and they are losing at home to Bromley and reality sets in again.

Yeah our poor starts have cost us dearly in the past few seasons, but we were still only 2 wins and a draw from winning the league this time. I should definitely think we can pick up at least an extra 7 points next season and I can't see the top contenders being as strong Barnet or yourselves were so I would hope it's enough.

We look to be reacting to play off defeat in the right way and hopefully learn from how spectacularly Wrexham ballsed up after theirs.

Possibly not, but I don't think many expected Barnet to run away with the league last year either - I thought they'd do well but not that well. Hurst does seem to have a bad habit of having a 'poor spell' in the season, hopefully that can be avoided this year but I think it's too early to say that the contenders 'aren't looking as strong'.

Is this the same Hurst that you've wanted sacked on and off for the best part of 2 years? Is he good now then, seeing as his word is apparently gospel? Can't keep up.

Hurst went a long way to redeeming for the fuck ups by giving us a brilliant side from January. He stopped his ridiculous rotation policy after January as he had a habit of doing in previous seasons. Something that was my main gripe with the guy and it worked.

He made the right signings (another thing he seemed to fuck up a lot in January time) when it was needed and we came ridiculously close.

I still don't think he has the ability to flip games on their heads and our home form needs addressing but he certainly appears to be learning. This season is his last shot at it though, surely.

Lew goes through stages depending on how well we are doing. Doing well and he goes all Kenny end. Lose a game and he wants the manager sacked.

Scott Davies is a good signing for Tranmere. The conference is about his level. Good shot stopper but doesn't like collecting crosses and kicking is poor. A bit inconsistent as well. Apparently had a scrap with our manager and so was frozen out

Probably league 2 highlighted his poorer skills. Should be ok in the conference

Let's have a little bet, what month will Lew first call for Hurst's head again? I'll go for November.

Im not as confident as i was a month or so ago. A lot of unknown quantities for me and a whole new squad to gel. I see us finishing higher this season but not troubling playoffs

I'd love to see anyone try that with Brabin. Cheers for the feedback though.
