Cookie's legs go in the second half of the season, they even did the season before we had him. He'll be electric at the start of the season, then wear off as the season goes on.

Great player when on form, lost a lot of pace but trickery and his passing vision is fantastic. But off it he got a little invisible and unreliable at times.

Cook was outstanding for the first part of the season, but looked a shadow of that player after Christmas. Not sure if he was carrying a knock, or if it was something more permanent, but it was the right call not to re-sign him.

If it was a knock then he's a quality signing, but given the real drop off in form over such a long time, I'm not convinced.

Eastleigh desperately need defenders. Can't say I'm an expert on them but having seen them twice against Grimsby they really could do with a lot of improvement at the back.

Else they'll just go down the FGR route of stockpiling attacking players in an attempt to score their way to the FL, never works.

Satisfied with this one. He's not going to be first choice and gives us versatility. In the first part of his loan spell a couple of years ago he was good and he ripped us a new one for Lincoln last year. He looked average in an average Lincoln team but it's probably not that easy to get motivated when you're playing for mid-table obscurity or lower mid-table obscurity. Lacks consistency but then so do the vast majority of Conference players. With our options he'll play if he deserves to, not like at Lincoln, because there was no better option. His late pace might come in handy off the bench. All-in-all, not ecstatic, but as Lew says, for a 4th choice Conference winger, he'll do. Probably cheap too so will leave more for a defender and a striker.

Well we can't all play like Barcelona or spend bundles on players like you teams above mid/lower table obscurity can we!?

Poor attempt, it ultimately fizzled out in the end, much like you would expect someone from Grimsby's sex life to turn out.

I'd have said exactly the same if we'd have signed him from half a dozen or more sides who finished mid-table and who were always going to finish mid-table last year, I wouldn't get worked up about it.

I hate pre-season optimism, what with fans trying to justify EVERY signing before lambasting them two or three weeks into the season. Marcus Marshall isn't very good, just admit it and move on.

In other news, Grimsby are signing another player tomorrow afternoon (don't ask me who but meant to be a right back).

Marcus Marshall is decent for the Conference when on it. Otherwise he's distinctly average. I'm hoping he can be motivated in a promotion chasing team to be more of the former. Certainly not expecting a world beater but if he can keep Mackreth, Arnold and Monkhouse on their toes and help bring out their best then he might, perhaps indirectly, be a good signing even if he doesn't play that much. I'd make him hit the gym in preseason, that's for sure.

I'm not getting worked up about it. In fact it amuses me you have signed him, even if he is only going to be around the 25th choice winger in your mega talented top of the table, lots of bucks squad. He must have a hell of an agent.

John Ramshaw comes in as Cox's assman.

Worked together at Eastwood and Mansfield.

We've signed Luke George from Southport.

Excellent signing, just the presence in midfield that we needed. Another signing due on Wednesday, thought to finally be confirmation of Ian Sharps.

No disrespect but he's sold himself short. Cracking combative midfielder who I thought would be on his way to somewhere in League 2. Should be a decent signing for you.

Echo what's been said about Cook but I think he faded around end October\ early November. Just gradually lost his sharpness from about 10-15 games into the season. Even at the start of the season Allen was looking to take him off before the end to save his legs.

Nah, reasoned thoughts on the signing of a footballer I've seen on numerous occasions. Perhaps best that you fuck off until 8th of August if you're going to be a tit all summer?

You felt moved enough to reply with a sarcy comment (twice)!

Nothing I said in my initial post was sarcy, it was a fair reflection of the situation Marshall found himself in last season. I have no time for petty point scoring. Last season you were a mid-table team with mid-table resources, I don't see why you're so sensitive about it. Often some players are only able to shine when those around them do too. Hopefully, as much as you obviously won't like it, Marshall can do that next season.

Despite all the willy waving and bullishness, Grimsby's transfers so far don't look particularly awe inspiring. They did have a good base to build from, but for me both Eastleigh and Tranmere have recruited more impressively so far and look more likely title winners as things stand.

Lincoln's business looks a lot more shrewd as well.

Since when is signing Mansfield rejects considered good business?
Also, Forest Green signing Sam-Yorke makes your point seem a bit silly, no?

We've signed Phil Turnbull from Gateshead. Any Gateshead fans give us a heads up on him?
Very classy player, been a mainstay in our midfield for 8 years and has left to take up a full time PE teachers role in Sunderland, we are going to miss him

Seems a bit of an odd comment. Grimsby had the best squad following the promotion of Barnet and Bristol Rovers. From there they have retained much of that squad and added to it with a few versatile additions. I think the loss of Magnay was probably their biggest blow. But certainly not irreplaceable. I think the rightly deserve the favourites tag, especially if they can bring in another striker.

Eastleigh has a good squad on paper but to me looks like they have the same problem as last season. Good players shoehorned into unfamiliar positions.

Tranmere have done what you'd expect under a non league manager like Brabin and added players who know this division well. They'll have a good squad but new teams in this league can get a bit of a culture shock.

Agree with you about Lincoln though. There seem to have been some very good signings there. I know Lincoln fans aren't convinced about the talents of their manager. But if her can gel that squad together they could be an outside bet for the playoffs and should certainly be finishing top half.

Lincoln should certainly be finishing top half, regardless of players signed, manager, or anything, ever.

Had this chat with my brother earlier about expected finishing position. Think an improvement on past seasons is reasonably attainable, but as we seem to have to basically re-start and build every season, it could obviously be similar or worse. Pulling the splinters out of my arse as I speak, but I think we will end up around 10th.
