Of course predictable Silky would make it a tribal thing and ignore that I think that Stones will actually be a success. Was more referring to how much City have tried to shore up that one position (centre back) and have repeatedly failed.

In United's defence, Pogba and Mata were already two proven world class players before they bought them, the same cannot be said of Stones, Mangala or Otamendi.

Fellaini, well, no one can defend that...

----------

And yeah Pags, I know how the Pogba situation turned out. You don't need to remind us every time he's mentioned on the forum, Ferguson made an almighty howler. I made a simple comment about his value in this market, how he left United in the first place wasn't relevant to my comment.

You all need a break from football if you believe £89m isn't an obscene amount of money for a football player.

Of course it is, but that isn't really the point, we're talking about market value. If Sterling costs £50 million and Higuain costs £78 million, we judge the respective values on other transfers off that. Pogba for £89 million actually looks like a snip when a 28 year old bottler signs for £78 million a couple of weeks prior.

Macclesfield Town/Manchester City. It's complicated.
I was really pointing out the pointlessness of the standard 'Arf, City spent money' comment. By this stage when clubs are making signings so big that the agents fee is more than, say, a Yaya Toure cost, and even mid table sides are dropping £20m here and there, then money on fees stops having any real relevance.

You can't judge yet anyway. If Pogba goes on to be the next Keane, then it's probably money well spent. If in 10 years Stones and Sterling have a hatful of medals with City, then so will that!

Hardly, unless the sum total of his mentions is around 2-3 times since his return looked like a possibility. That's the type of exaggeration I expect from the likes of Christian Slater or Nilsson mate.

"At least City have a centre back now."

Man City have spent more on CBs in the last 5 years than most clubs have spent on players altogether.

Favourite Fact of the Day: Pogba cost Man Utd just 18% of their turnover. Equivalent to Crystal Palace paying £15m for a player.

With Mourinho, Zlatan and Pogba coming in, it looks like the right mentality is back at the club.

Still got to sort out the 50 mill the agent is getting.

Manchester United are not paying any of Juventus's agent fee on the Pogba deal

If you add £100m to the fee you would be correct. You've given Southampton more than that over the last few years

Just to put this into perspective how ridiculous this is, this amount would pay our current playing budget for the next 90 years.

He gets nothing from United from this deal, been confirmed today. And when have wages ever been factored in to a transfer deal?

You honestly believe this hold up and cost of this transfer he gets nothing after all that negotiating? Wool over eyes.

Not that I care but even Italian media are claiming that Juventus have paid Raiola's commission of €25m (which they had to negotiate between themselves). I think the transfer was always set to be completed once Pogba's holiday finished, it's no coincidence that United announced the signing on the day he was due back at Juventus.

He gets lots. Paid for by Juve. Pogba gets a wedge too. Again paid for by Juve. In the Juve official announcement

If thats the case fair enough, its still a £170 mill layout on a player who wasn't even France's best at the Euro's. Trying too hard to be a poor mans Real Madrid it seems.

Over the 3 year period it's due to be paid, it's less money than Liverpool pay Southampton on average.

I'm over the moon with the Pogba signing, it's just a shame we saw fit to pay £300m for him as well as offering him £600k in weekly wages. What really pushes this deal into the realms of sa(l)tire, though, is the payment of £45m to Raiola.

How many of them would currently get in to your preferred starting XI?
Clyne, Lovren, Mane definitely. I'm not a great fan of Lallana but Klopp is and he's going to be playing deeper this season. So three definitely in my lineup, and if Lallana can start to produce in the new role then fine.

The Pogba vitriol is rather predictable, it happens every time the transfer fee is broken, but for teams like Man Utd, Barcelona, Real Madrid the fee scarcely matters. He is a significant step up in a poor, and still unbalanced squad, whilst coming with excellent home grown credentials. He's a no brainer.

The far more baffling transfer is that of John Stones, a chancer who made Fuenes Mori look competent. He does come with home grown credentials....surely that's the only reason they signed him!?! If you look through the litany of Man City centre back purchases of recent years by far the best value has been the much maligned Demichelis - coming in second is the, actually excellent, Otamendi.

If City start with a centre back pairing of a finished Kompany and a never-been Stones they'd be as well starting three goals down.

Stones and Sterling rapidly looking like the next Rodwell and Sinclair.

Stockport County.
Pogba is an absolutely sensational footballer. He can basically do a bit of everything. He's more of an attacking midfieler than a defensive midfielder, which for some reason most seem to believe to be the other way round.

Renegade's post was spot on earlier. His success will depend how he's used. Sit him in a double pivot like Deschamps did and he'll look no bettter than your average midfielder.

Get him up the pitch, central, right, left, runs in the box and he'll be phenominal. And at 23, in 4-5 years as inflation rises, he'll look like a bargain.

Stones hasn't even played a game in a City shirt yet. How the hell can he rapidly be looking like anything?

Doesn't need to, the motivation behind the signing is the same, the form at prior clubs being utterly underwhelming remains accurate - it's actually an excellent fit. Rodwell and Stones even came from the same club.

Wouldn't be surprised if the latter is bench warming at Sunderland or Ipswich in a few years time.

Although I do like the logic of "spend lots of money, he'll be the cornerstone of your defence for years" and the last wunderkid it applied to. Phil "Rolls Royce" Jones. Currently, um, no idea - not playing, being injured, playing terribly? Take your pick.
