Fundamental difference here is that Dominic Cummings is responsible for advising and has advocated the government policy of staying home, protecting the NHS and saving lives in its initial stage. To break those rules whilst with suspected symptoms and call it 'instinct' is an insult to the rest of the British public, the vast majority of whom have followed the guidelines even if it means they were unable to see dying family members.

It's defending the indefensible if you believe what he's done is OK - this is a terrible look for the government. Keir Starmer is also doing the sensible thing of not saying anything and letting everything crumble in front of him (I said I wouldn't get political within this thread but that's it).

PS: Just promote Wealdstone.
whilst i don't agree with what he did the fact he is an adviser immediately made me think about what happened to the Scottish woman who was giving out medical advice with the SNP - she twice went to her holiday home and was stopped and warned by the police. She resigned - BUT Nicola "Wee Jimmy Krankie" Sturgeon tried to persuade her not to resign.....

Stephen Kinnock is a doofus anyway, I’d love for him to resign his Shadow Ministerial post.
Anyway, the MPs concerned apologised and they are accountable to their electorate. Cummings is accountable to no one.

He surely cannot survive that? It couldn’t have possibly gone any worse, and this guy is the chief political advisor??

I’d rather he’d have just sat there and blamed Carol Baskin.

If he thinks people hated him before that press conference....

Don't think many of the journalists believed his answers, or thanked him afterwards

The problem is that there are plenty of sycophants who will defend him over everything, and he and Johnson will take comfort from them and assume they represent the public.

As Cummings said himself yesterday, the media misjudged the public mood on Brexit therefore in his eyes, the media must by default always be on the wrong side.

I suspect he will be proven very wrong on this. He's like a gambler on a winning streak who's brainwashed himself into thinking that the L is never going to happen. It will.

Johnson and his mate are obviously arseholes. I think the more general point is that we put far too much faith in privileged, entitled public schoolboys who literally have no idea how ’normal’ people‘s lives work.

Why do people keep bringing up an irrelevant hypothetical to deflect from the reality?

Tories have been in for 10 years now and life has been shit and getting worse for a lot of people during that time. Long before corona. They've had plenty of time to make things better and it's still 'yeah but can you imagine if Labour was in charge??!1!??'. The time for this being any kind of defence for them (if it ever was) has long since ended.

I'm happy you agree Johnson is being (or just is) incompetent but shifting the rest of your post to imagining how Labour may or may not have done instead is subtly and maybe subconsciously reinforcing the general letting him off the hook when he should be being held far more accountable.

Nothing personal for what it's worth Railway Blue, just an example on here of the narrative I've seen so many times elsewhere online and something I think is worth pointing out.
I reckon it is just people who foolishly voted tory in such affluent places as Stoke and Mansfield that are desperately trying to justify it to themselves.

Well I think that situation was unique due to brexit.

The fact that a place like stoke - which (rightly or wrongly) has a pretty solid reception of being an absolute dump and as poor as you can get voting Tory made a story - and rightfully so.

The other problem being is, like the “in” campaign the labour campaign and labour were so helplessly feckless it wasn’t really a surprise to anyone.

He’s probably right. NL clubs can’t afford to do pre-season except in the usual way.
He's definitley right. Lower league football without crowds is simply not worth anybodies time or money.

There's no reason in September and October we can't let what are pretty small crowds into what are mostly open air stadiums. They'll have cracked open indoor shopping centres by then.

They’re cracking open shopping centres on the 15th June, it’s pretty easy to social distance sitting or standing at most NL grounds so I really don’t see the new season being delayed too long, the longer they do leave it the more clubs will go bust and the bigger shambles it will be. If the opening of pubs happens in early July, why we waiting until September\October to see if this virus returns as it’s more likely to in the winter.

I'd crack it in August mate to be honest, you won't hear it on Piers Morgan's Daily morning ramble show but there was an interesting article I saw that reckons this virus is dying it out at a decent rate in the Northern Hemisphere as the weather warms up. We still have to have measures of course but I think in a couple of months there really shouldn't be much wrong with circa 2k-7k people in what are essentially outdoor environments. I'm talking below Tier 2 here. And the ones who get more than 7k usually do it in much bigger grounds anyway allowing for better distancing.

One issue is toilets, football stadium toilets must be one of the most unhygenic places you can be.

Pre Covid carrying around a little hand sanitizer in your pocket would be creepy as fuck but I can see it being pretty common and acceptable during and post Covid.

more from our chairman
he thinks anything other than null & void would be 'unfair'
won't endear himself to Barrow!!

Anything other than playing out the season in its entirety is unfair.

However, null and void is by far and away the most unfair option of all. From a sporting integrity perspective, PPG and honouring the existing promotion/relegation places is the best out of a bad set of options. Preferably playing the play-offs if possible, but automatically promoting the top 2 if not.

Starting it in August may not be too much of a problem. Finishing it could be a pain in the arse though.

I see the small number of entrances to a football ground as just as big an issue to overcome before we can have matches with crowds.
As for the hand sanitiser it was always a good idea to carry a mini-dispenser to matches, not just now!

I think so too, mainly because null and void just means everybody involved from the club owners to the fans have paid their hard-earned money for absolutely nothing since August. All the money involved in clubs and supporters paying for away trips, overnight stays etc. There has to be some winners from this situation.

finishing it shouldn't be an issue - with the world cup in 2022 being a winter one that means we could play season 2021/22 all in 2022 (say feb to July) and then start again in early September with 2022/23. That leaves all of next year to finish the new season if needs be.

Can't stand the guy but he's got a point. There's been no sign or indication of what the NL's plans are.
Part of that problem is because they've been waiting on the EFL who've also been terribly slow at clarifying anything, who've been waiting on the PL who've also been terribly slow at clarifying anything...

Yesterday, the EFL had a meeting about having another meeting so that bodes well!

That all looks optimistic to me. We have the highest rate of excess deaths in the world. The notion that we will get next season finished with paying crowds in attendance without multiple hold-ups feels at the moment, unrealistic.

Unlike other countries with competent governments, the UK looks almost entirely reliant on the development and availability of a vaccine, which may well be a long way away.
