Got all our business done pre cap......68k maximum per signing

All those who could not understand why we give Doyle,Sarcevic etc 2/3 year deals is that these players will give us room to offer a bit more in the coming season.s.....Doyle will be classed at 68k for every year of his contract.....happy days

What is the issue exactly? He's right. You're a v small club trying to artificially buy the league every season under sugar daddy Radford. Bottom 1/4 of L2 is your station, at best.

Firstly, and I’ll be very disappointed if I find out otherwise, we came out on behalf of 30 odd L1/2 clubs in favour of a wage cap, although admittedly that was a while ago and I’m not sure if that included the specifics that went through just now. Obviously, you and valefan2646 or whatever didn’t know that or just decided to ignore it.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/sport/amp/football/52398548

Secondly, not that this is relevant, when it comes to League 2 football Mansfield are bang at home, traditionally, historically, and in that context Mansfield are not even close to a ‘v small club’ because this is our level, with or without JR money unfortunately.

And it's been approved for Leagues 1 and 2.

I get the sustainability argument, but the fact that it hasn't been implemented from top to bottom of English football is awful for the competitiveness of English football. Unless the Championship and the Premier League now follow suit and introduce their own appropriate caps (and there's not a snowball's chance in hell of the Premier League doing that), those two leagues just become closed shops as promoted teams won't have a hope of competing financially while teams relegated to League 1 will just go straight back up with ease.
That's certainly one of the arguments. Also, you could see 'smaller' clubs push the boat out to try and get up to the divisional cap to compete on a financial level.

We need the Championship to follow suit as well because otherwise it creates a bigger gap than there already is.

Also going to be an issue with for NL Clubs. They could, in theory, have a bigger budget in the league below. They're going to be between a rock and a hard place because do they a) re-build their squad before the L2 season because we know the quality difference between the leagues, or b) give their players longer contracts to get around the cap initially but risk not being able to shift them?

It's going to take three or four years for the salary cap to properly come into effect and work because of deals already handed out. No doubt between now and then they'll be tweaks to it as well.

The Championship is the league most crying out for it, it’s gotta follow surely?

Has the conference even considered it at all? You’ll consistently get bigger budgets at that level if not.

What's the rationale behind thinking a 1.5m salary cap in L2 will result in bigger budgets in the Conference? Yes, there will be the bankrolled/ex-league clubs that will throw a budget that size at it but they're the ones that would have been done it anyway? I can't see any Conference teams around the sort 800k to 1.2m budgets size deciding to just up theirs by a few hundred grand. Unless I'm missing something here?

I'm not saying it will result in it, I'm saying there have, and will be more, Club's getting promoted out of the NL with a budget bigger than the L2 cap.

The other point was that, using an extreme example, Accrington are now much closer to be being able to match Sunderland, whereas before they'd not have been able to. Money obviously isn't everything, but it raises an interesting question whether smaller clubs will gamble a bit more to reach the salary cap limit.

EDIT - Just realised you were probably replying to Conks.

A 22-2 majority in L2.

Salford won't have wanted it. They've been aggressive in their transfer dealings before this vote and Neville has always argued against restricting investment into teams.

I don’t think anybody was suggesting that, my point was you already have quite a few teams at that level above the £1.5m mark.

16/23 in L1 so as expected, a bit more aligned in L2.

Teams in lge 2 now need to keep there spending down.
It will help teams like Bolton who have spent way above the £1.5m ceiling. Keeping your wages down will mean Doyle,Sarcevic and Crawford will be classed as the divisional average.
If other teams do this it will mean we can bring in more on big contracts come the january transfer window....especially if we are doing crap in second place.

I was replying to both of you, Luke. Just took your posts the wrong way haha. You didn't mean that would happen as a result, you just meant that clubs will come up and have to reduce their budget. And yes very true. I wonder what percentage of teams coming up are higher than the cap. Almost certainly over half during the time we were all down there.

Shock. Something sensible happens in football.

If Salford were against it we know this is a bellwether of being good for the game.

Shock horror that clubs might have to adopt an Accrington approach and work hard on and off the pitch.

That said I am only here because of massive losses run up to aid tax avoidance and nepotism.....

900k hahaha. Every single team that won the division while we were down there spent more than that with most dwarfing it and I bet pretty much all bar Newport spent under that from the teams that went up in the playoffs. Maybe York were around 900k?
Yeah but we balanced it out by spending £12.77.

Just kidding, we didn't spend that much.

What it really means is that you now can’t throw money at players and players will choose clubs by other criteria - and not for the usual reason, higher wages.

If any of your highly paid players don’t perform for whatever reason you cannot just go out in January and ‘buy’ another player just by waving a lucrative contract at them. It piles even more pressure on managers to get recruitment correct at the first attempt.

Confirms most teams budgets are set at or below £1.5m then, as judging by the majority of clubs business up till now, most haven't gone for it and brought in big names.

No more big signings coming in for anyone from now on either.

Not having a pop, you seem like a decent chap and whatnot, but can you remind me of your national league wage budget under Adrian Pennock?

We were saying we were against it before hand so may have been us.

Wasn't a dig at Mansfield btw just suggesting the clubs with bigger budgets or size wouldnt want to be hamstrung by it.

Huge. Jon Parkin didn't come cheap for starters. We lost £2.5m in one season I think?

The funny thing is that we've spent less since getting into the league then we did to get in it. I suppose Vince is getting the advertising/exposure he wanted now so what with the central funding etc he doesn't feel like he needs to throw as much money at it.

I've argued this before on The Fishy that you're actually way closer to being sustainable in League 2 than you were in those last 4 or 5 (?) seasons in the Conference.

Tbf Vince always claimed when we were in the NL that we would be more sustainable in the league, most people thought he was talking bollocks but he seems to be right to a point. Helped by the fact our transfer policy has shifted to focus on signing mainly non-league or young players and selling them for a profit.

how much do have you lost the last few seasons then, do you get significant sponsorship money from vince companies?

First season up, £400k in the black. Second season up we lost around £800k, blamed partly on the collapse of the Doidge deal which would have netted us £1m (we carried on paying his wages and signed a couple of replacements).

19-20 well in the black according to Vince, which wouldn't be a shock given we got £250k from Hibs for Doidge, settled up with Bolton's new owners (6 figures apparently),got a reasonable amount at tribunal for Reece Brown from Huddersfield, got another 6 figures from Leeds promotion thanks to the Jordan Stevens add-ons and generally ran with a younger, cheaper squad. Also the Candriam deal seems to be pretty lucrative according to the club.
