When you look at the figures quoted and the money he's going to have then you can see why he's interested in the job, Everton currently looks a sideways step but he must feel what he's being offered is going to allow him to take Everton further than he could take Southampton. Football is a fickle game and if Southampton have a slow start next season and sit bottom in October fans will be calling for his head anyway, he probably sees it as an opportunity he can't turn down, and of course Everton are a huge football club.

We didn't call for his head when we lost pretty much every game from mid-November to the beginning of January. Could even argue that cost us top 4 in the end.... Because football definitely works like that. :bg:

I can only think of Nigel Adkins who had a better relationship with the fans during his time here, during my time supporting the club anyway.

Oh well, I'm sure the Southampton job is the most attractive it's ever been for a new guy.

You wanted loads of unrealistic names. As it stands you've committed yourself to paying world elite rates only to actually appoint a fringe European manager.

Koeman is a step up from Martinez and is from the same school ideology wise. Should be a good appointment.

The only real issue you can envisage is the Everton fans themselves. If they're not winning 2-0 by 30 minutes they resort to booing and disrupting their team. With the PL having grown at a faster rate than Everton they've been caught up by a raft of sides. They believe themselves to be on the level of Liverpool/Spurs, so when the likes of Stoke & Southampton beat em they spit the their dummies out.

Yeah I'm sure there will be plenty of managers who'd jump at the chance to manage Southampton at the minute, currently a really good squad providing you keep them all this summer, and with a few additions could yet again improve.

Good catch by Everton if it's true. I'm surprised he would want to move but if Everton have big money to spend then perhaps it's understandable, he's clearly looking beyond the sorry state they're currently in and believes he can have them challenging for the top 8 within a few seasons.

I remember Villa spending big when Lerner took over then regretting it once they had massive wage bills on the payroll and he started to lose interest. That and stopping the buys was the reason O'Neill walked. I do wonder if this new guy is at Everton for the long haul given that he's not that rich in the scheme of things.

Top 8? He's already at a club that finished 6th this season and has finished in the top 8 in the last 3. I think his aspirations must be far higher than that. Or he's just happy to be on more dough.

Perhaps he's peed off that Saints sell anything that moves every summer?
Perhaps he had assurances that Everton won't be selling Lukaku/Stones or whoever Koeman can develop.
It still seems weird though, because a bigger and probably even better financed offer would have come along before long.

It has nothing to do with us "selling everything that moves". We rightfully aren't prepared to match Everton's £7m a year offer for him. He's good but he isn't that good.

Our ITK's don't think the players will be too unhappy with it. Tadic and Mane for example had fallen out with Koeman.

Jordy Clasie and VVD will probably be disappointed but there's rumours that he will look to sign Clasie. He's welcome to him. No chance of him or any other club getting VVD though.

Koeman thinks he can push Everton into top 4. Along with city united arsenal it will be Everton Chelsea and spurs fighting for 4 places next season with Leicester the only other team with top 6 chances possibly.

£5 million compensation now not £7 million Everton really showing Littlehampton what it means to be a big club. Be £3 million by the time Koeman gets his dream job.....hope it collapses and Mancini comes in personally.

There's no need, I'm sure the octogenerians on the Sussex coast are still mentally living in the days when Everton were a big club

I've never understood the small and cautious approach to compensation for managers. If you think a coach is the right fit then the fee is irrelevant. It's fuck all now anyway.

A big club would just pay the £7mill wouldn't they? Surely only small time penny pinching misers haggle over a few mill?

They'd at least add an extra £1.

Everton refusing to sign it shows that insisting on such an agreement is a good idea.

Don't really think they'd need/want all that many Southampton players though really. Van Dijk and Forster are the only ones that standout. Mane and Tadic are supposdly not mates with Koeman and then there's only Wanyama because Evertons defensive mids are getting on a bit, and I reckon Saints would be ok with him going anyway.

It might also be little more than Southampton being aware that they're unable to force Koeman to stay, but that they can make Everton's poaching of him as difficult as possible.

Van Dijk would take up a fair % of their transfer budget. Recently signed a 6 year deal. The mirror thinks he's interested in taking him with him to Everton (along with JWP) but that same article bigs up his attention to youth development. Bringing players through the academy hasn't been one of his strong points here.

Bertrand is better than anything they have to offer at LB and has always been full of praise when it comes to Koeman.

He is but I don't think it's a position they'd go out to buy for, not what it would cost them to prise Bertrand away for anyway. Baines will do for another season with Oviedo/Galloway as back up.

I forgot that Besic still existed, so they shouldn't need Wagamama either.
