The battle scenes were really creatively choreographed. I also loved the framing of the Davos/Bonfire scene and the editing trickery for Jon's charge at Ramsey's army. All really impressive and elevated the material.

They've ruined Dany, though, and the Ramsay Dogs scene was predictable and emptyfan service that reached for a satisfying conclusion that I don't think existed for those characters.

Dany and the Starks have to be tragic characters for any of this to make sense on a thematic level imo. I wonder who will carry the torch beyond the narrative of the books...

Well unless Bran makes it back and his equipment still works, House Stark basically died with Rickon. Jon's sons won't be Stark's and neither will Sansa or Arya's.

Thinking about it, should we read anything into Bolton not being seen to have actually died? You know how it is with this fucking show, even if he had, it would be no guarantee he won't make another appearance at some point.

That'd be getting a bit too Glen from the Walking Dead though wouldn't it?

???

Is their storyline not tragic if House Stark dies no matter what they do?

not classically tragic no, in the sense that their downfall is either of their own making, exacerbated by it or poetic in some respect

Varys has been gone for a couple of episodes to be fair. Jaime got from the Twins to King's Landing pretty quickly.

Although the writers have said that not all the storylines are happening at the exact same time and this explains why people suddenly seem to teleport.

I sense the average viewer who doesn't engage heavily in internetting and has never read the books will still be utterly clueless as to Jon's parentage. Maybe that was intentional (with the inaudible muttering), but they surely knew that "superfans" would now consider R+L=J all-but-confirmed. I think it creates an unnecessary divide in the viewership, one we haven't had since the show overtook the books, with the inevitable reveal still to come of YOUR FATHER WAS A TARGARYEN / YOU HAVE A GREATER CLAIM TO THE THRONE THAN DANY / WHO ALSO HAPPENS TO BE YOUR AUNTY / ETC. going to be a big shock to some and a bit of a non-event to others.

Well either that or they need a very good memory across the seasons for all the little hints dropped.

There is quite a bit of that going on now, I fear. Did that origins of the white walkers/pixie tree people stuff a few eps back make any sense to folks who haven't read about it elsewhere, for eg?

I suppose it is some sort of logical conclusion to the investment in this show that it now requires a massive, crowd-sourced digital exegesis.

Wasn't the extent of that scene just to show that these magical little people created the white walkers? A relatively swift and simple explanation of where / when / why they exist.

can anyone explain how Varys got himself on that ship with Dany at the end? He was in Dorne five minutes before that.

And even if you accept it WOULD be possible to have been on that ship, why would he bother sailing to Dorne, then sailing back to Mereen, just to then sail all the way back to Westeros? I can't work out if it's a mistake or just a stupid element of the plot.

Well, there were Dornish and Tyrell ships in that fleet as well, so I'm assuming they must've all met up in the narrow sea and are heading towards Kings Landing. But yeah, logic took a hit there.

Jon's a bastard, Daenerys still has the better claim by far.

He isn't if Rhaegar and Lyanna married. The thing is, even if we know, how is anyone in Westeros going to find out?

Wasn't Rhaegar already married to Elia Martell?

think this might have been the best season tbh, it was very fan service-y but in a good way.

Yeah I don't feel like they went overboard with it, people were saying about a slow start, maybe. But a big pay off for it all.

Superb episode, but I enjoyed last week's much more. Just goes to show the standard in recent weeks.
