No to independence in the referendum but massive votes for the snp . Am I alone in finding that strange ?

No, bizarre as far as I'm concerned.

Have to say though I can't blame the Scots, I voted Labour today, but had I an alternate option akin to the SNP with regards to my regional biases I would have gone down that route.

People who wanted independence but ruled with their head rather than heart that Scotland is more beneficial part of the union, and those voting for the SNP because they're the only anti-austerity party standing with a good chance of winning.

Not that bizarre for me.

Fancy founding a Yorkshire party, Craig?

Well you've got almost half of the electorate who voted for independence, then of the remaining 55%, a significant portion are buying into the 'best deal for Scotland within a UK framework' narrative the SNP are using.

Whatever you think of the SNP this is just so impressive.

There's a Yorkshire First.

That's not a Yorkshire enough name for real Yorkshire folk.

Couple of gains off the Lib Dems coming in, one for the Cons and another for Labour.

Fair enough , but i thought that the main reason for the snp was Scottish independence. If their aims have changed then I stand corrected .

Well they are but there was still a reasonable amount of people who voted against independence based on economic pragmatism despite perhaps idolising an independent Scotland. A vote for a nationalist party in the general election is a lot risk free but still a way of proving your point that you believe in Scots nationalism.

Plus even whilst independence is their ultimate gain, the SNP have run a fantastic campaign to convince unionists that they will do the best deal for Scotland.

Cons gain Colchester, fairly established Lib Dems previously.

Jeremy Vine still enjoying Knightmare.

I get that , but the snp 's whole reason for being is independence so after the defeat in the referendum I am surprised by their ability to grow their vote so spectacularly

I suppose they've taken advantage of the no vote being split between Labour and Tory supporters.

They're really not a one policy party though, haven't been for decades.

Of course not EG, but surely the want for independence would be the overriding factor in your choice between them and Labour when casting your vote? by voting SNP I would imagine their supporters at least realise they're handing over the government to the Tories.

It's Labour's dismal performance in England which is going to hand the Conservatives the government, little to do with the SNP.

They could never have guessed that Labour would have failed in England so spectacularly. They probably felt they were voting for a Labour/SNP coalition, with the bigger the SNP contingent, the more powers for Scotland on the table.

Well losing 40 odd seats in Scotland is hardly 'little', but I bow to your superior knowledge of Scottish party politics anyroad, Ellis.

In fairness, well done to the Scots, a whole nation against the Tory scum, it says a lot.
What are you talking about? The Tories only got one seat in 2010. Ultimately I don't see how voting for a secessionist party is going to protect Scotland from the Tories any more than voting Labour would have done.

I would say at least it'll teach Labour a lesson. But the party has moved to the left and lost votes in the South of England.

Whole thing is just deeply depressing.

Poor Tessa Jowell. She looks like she's seen a ghost.

When shall we start talking about who the next leaders of Labour and the LDs will be?
