Aye, but up to 70mph, roads jammed with traffic etc? Never done that. It's not as easy as saying blanket that everyone should/will find it easier, know a few drivers who've been passed for years who still much rather avoid motorway driving.

I remember my first time I had to drive on the motorway. I'd just passed my test and my manager asked me to do a delivery to Birmingham in a Transit van which I'd never driven before in the rain. I was a fucking wreck when I got back to our branch.

Statistically motorways are the safest roads to drive on, but being able to judge time and distances at high speeds is imperative and it's for that reason I'd rather be sat next to an experienced driver than a new one on the motorway.

Reminds me a little of my first act of driving after I passed. My boss wanted me to deliver a co-workers new van to him which involved going on the motorway for the first time. The worst bit was I had work boots on, I drove about two miles before I took them off and did the rest of the journey in just my socks.

7 times up and down a dual carriageway won't necessarily prepare you for driving on a motorway. On those occasions there might be light traffic, the weather might be fine and I think the difference between 3 lanes and two is significant. We were talking about that situation when two lorries on a motorway are stuck in a war of attrition in the first two lanes. This means getting into the third lane to get past them, not easy for an inexperienced driver when the traffic is heavy. You wouldn't get that situation on a dual carriageway.

It's fairly easy tbf. You just do the same thing you did to get into the second lane :dk: If the yanks can manage 15 lanes I think the majority of us can conquer a 3 lane system.

Some motorways have two lanes and some dual carriageways have three lanes, so you could encounter that situation anyway.

That's true. I've driven on a two lane motorway before when going to Hull, might have been the M180. I've never seen a dual carriageway with 3 lanes though. Not sure why a road with 3 lanes would called a dual carriageway though.

The dual refers to the fact that the opposite directions are separated, not the number of lanes.

By the way, the first time I drove on a motorway I pulled in front of a car towing a caravan and almost wiped them out. It would have been a great start to my driving life.

Sorry for being a pedant and all that but I've driven on single lane roads that have one lane with an area separating the other single lane. Are they dual carriageways?

(if you say yes I swear to god I will back down on this)

Yes they are. As long as there's a central reservation it's a dual carriageway.

Yeah but...ahhh I guess you're right. I've learned something today -don't fuck with Cheese and Biscuits when it comes to matters concerning roads.

Methinks someone needs to do their theory test again. I'm a few weeks away from my practical and I've been driving on a three lane dual carriageway for weeks. Maybe they're more prevalent in Northern Ireland.

The theory is largely forgotten ten minutes after passing it. My revision for it was learning on a CD Rom until I consistently got all the answers correct. It took me less than 5 mins to do the test and I got 100%. Can hardly recognise a sign that isn't designating speed.

I was one of the first people to do a driving therory test back in 97. I got 100%. Questions about whether you should bring a hot flask of drink with you when you leave home or honk your horn when passing horses. I guess it's harder now.

I passed my test (2nd time) a week before the introduction of the theory part came in. :D

Is driving 120mph...
A) Stupid
B) Idiotic
C) They can take our lives but they'll never take my FREEDOM!
It was a clear road, and I only did it for two or three miles :D Haven't drove that fast in about 15 years and I have a quick car so you have to flush out the cobwebs now and again! ;)

Speeding in Scotland is just not worth it. Cameras everywhere and they prosecute everything. I got 3 points for doing 80 on a motorway between Aberdeen and Edinburgh, and there is no option to do the course instead of the points. Plus I got a £100 fine, and then it was in a hire car so they charged me £36 for processing it. It still annoys me too, as I imagine at least 50% of cars on a motorway are doing at least 80, and I was by no means faster than the cars around me that day.

The A/M90 from Dundee to Edinburgh is pretty clear of cameras, but the Aberdeen road from Dundee has I believe been rigged up well. I haven't driven it since the nineties though so I can't speak for myself driving it, but a friend of mine used to commute daily to Aberdeen.

I got done for speeding once back in '97 when I was in my bosses car going to Perth Prison to deliver cleaning materials. 60 in a 40 it was, 3 points and a slap on the wrists. Ironically I was tailing a FIAT who was going faster than I was. I was only 20 though and was in the boy-racer phase.

Yeah, it was that first bit between Aberdeen and Dundee where it happened. There's about 4 times as many cameras there as there is in the Dundee to Edinburgh half of the journey.

I drove quite fast just after I passed my test, especially showing off to friends, and touched 100 once just to say I'd done it. But I haven't purposely sped in about 5 years, so it was quite annoying. I had my parents in law as passengers too on their first visit to the UK, and I get done for speeding taking them back from the airport.

Oh Jesus that is bad! I was coming back from the airport as well but was on my own thankfully in case I did get caught (and banned at that speed lol!).

...They're a fan of Chelsea, Liverpool, Man U, Man City or Arsenal....despite having absolutely fuckall affiliation to said club or city.

Ain't nobody got time for dem goons.

Especially when they live in Camborne, or any other Cornish town, and have never crossed the Tamar
