Suspect Sunderland fans can expect to be featured again in this thread around the same time next season.

Rinse and repeat…

Grant McCann looks a good option

Wouldn't surprise me if they looked at Warnock to get them up though

Don't think Johnson is the answer for Sunderland long term but their team is ridiculously young. The defence is inexperience. Most of the season they have had 2 teenagers playing their first season in the professional game as well as a central midfielder there. Central midfield looks a but powderpuff with Corry Evans there.

They have some great attacking options, so I am hoping they don't bring in any more defenders before the window closes.....

Absolutely crazy. They've had a few bad results in big games, and obviously yesterday was bad but they're third in the table, just two points off the top!

I'm not Johnson's biggest fan but surely they were still pretty well placed for promotion. They've basically binned off the season as the new boss has no transfer window. Madness.

Reckon they’ve just done it so they can sign Defoe tomorrow.

I am no fan of Johnson but that is one of the most outrageous sackings for a while

I agree, they are third FFS, not third from bottom. You could see it coming though . I went on a Sunderland messageboard to chuckle at the meltdown and you would have thought they had just been relegated with just about everyone wanting Johnson sacked.

Too many heavy away defeats done for him ?

Home form isn’t bad ..
Far too streaky as well but heavy away defeats have definitely contributed. Hopefully whoever comes in doesn’t fuck about too much and sticks to what works

Defoe is a free agent so the deadline won’t apply to him. I can’t see him coming here tbh. But u never know.

There has been a huge split in regard to LJ for a while. Bristol City fans warned us of his losing runs and unbeaten runs. But losing 6-0, 5-1, 4-0 away from home when u want top two is disgusting. Far too many off days, he chucked away automatics last year back end of season with a shitty run and i reckon the new owners don’t want a repeat of that. He has had more yellow cards than some players as well. We do have a young team but Saturday he reverted to a back 4 even though he knows we struggle with a back 4 and surprise surprise we get a good hiding. The safc job is a poisoned chalive. From the outside looking in being 3rd usually keeps a manager in the job but it’s the circumstances above and Saturdays result that have eventually made the hierarchy realise he isn’t the man to get us up. If we somehow get top two then we have achieved our goal cos every supporter knows we aint winning the play offs as we never do. God knows who will come in but he has some task sorting the defence out.

You raise an interesting point when you say “being third usually keeps a manager in the job”. I can’t think of any in that situation that have been sacked, can anyone else? On the face of it this seems extraordinary, if not unique.

Forest Green sacked their manager whilst in 2nd place in the Conference, just ahead of the playoffs. They also sacked Mark Cooper last year whilst 6th. West Brom were 4th in the Championship when they sacked Darren Moore as well.

So it does happen. Sometimes chairmen/boards can just see it's not going to work. Other times it's behind the scenes issues.

Sheffield Wednesday 2012

Sacked Gary Megson whilst 3rd, in this division, appointed Dave Jones, overhauled Sheffield United 5 points ahead in the run in to finish 2nd.

From the outside it looks like sheer panic. It's right at the end of the transfer window so clearly a knee-jerk decision.

54% win ratio as well. I think the losing and unbeaten runs he seems to go on probably worked against him and gave an impression that was worse than it was.

But I'm not sure Sunderland every took to Johnson, really? It seem one that as destined not to work out.

Odds are swayed pretty easily at this level for managerial appointments but Duncan Ferguson wasn't even in the list and went straight to favourite in the space of an hour last night.

Expect another strange appointment.
They do try to fit square pegs into round holes.
Need some stability - someone for a long term project not half a season flash in the pan.
Who I don’t know. No immediate names jump out at you.
Someone who can handle the pressure of a big club and not acting about 14 after 2 beers like Johnson did, running on the pitch confronting the referee like he did at our place. ( think he did it a few times ).

Didn’t Tranmere sack Keith Hill last season before the play offs?

But then who am I to talk about managers being sacked .

Young Roy probably won’t see out the season !

Hope it hasn’t got a relegation get out clause or will be a 5 month contract

My suspicion is (and it’s based on nothing) that if there are clauses it’s to allow him to talk to any higher placed teams that might come calling should he do well. Bit of a no lose situation for him seeing as it’ll take nothing short of a miracle to keep us up and he won’t be blamed if/when we go down, and it’s better to be in work.

Now hopefully get some players in before the end of the day.
