Strange club, linked with loads of old heads then end up with an unproven 35yr old.

They didn't want Manning because he didn't have much experience. Well, McKenna's got a lot more - not.

Look at the old heads we’ve had in the past and they’ve achieved nothing. Who creates the links anyway? Is it just random journalists making stuff up that sound potentially correct based on historical managerial appointments?

Never heard of the new guy, seems there’s a lot of good and bad reviews so a case of wait and see.

Who knows but based on Ipswich's managerial & transfer record, it all seems a bit pot luck.

I agree that it's worth trying this different approach though.

Intruiged is probably the best way to sum up my thoughts. Don't mind admitting that I'd never heard of him. Let's hope he's learnt a thing or two up North! Why though, just like 99.9% of other clubs, do we insist on handing new managers a three-and-a-half year deal from the off? I know it's the norm, but it baffles me.

I really hope the board have conveyed to him that he isn't under pressure to perform miracles and fire us into the top six this season? I know for certain that 99.9% of fans will not demand that this season; providing we see some form of progression, even if it's minimal.

Came out of nowhere, this one. Five years at Man United rising through the ranks from under-18s boss. Always wondered who the bloke sat on the bench who looked a bit like Phil Neville was.

Who knows? Could be a masterstroke or could be a disaster.

Ipswich already have a championship winning side so appointing an unproven manager with zero football lge experience is a big gamble.

They done the right thing by getting rid of cook but I’m not convinced this route will succeed, time will tell.

Time will be the judge of that, I reckon. This was Cook's first sacking since his first managerial appointment at Southport back in 2007. He pretty consistently eventually gets it right wherever he goes. Doesn't look like the new Ipswich owners were prepared to wait however.

Not without Richardson he doesn’t.

Yes, that's a huge elephant in the room for him. First appointment without Richardson and he's failed dismally.
Especially with that squad, it should be pissing this lge really, certainly not floating around mid table at best.

Not wanting to come across as a Paul Cook fanboy, but I think that's harsh. He's generally taken a year or so to get consistent results, with Wigan being the one exception. Personally, I think one more transfer window may have improved things but he wasn't the new owners' choice so really needed a fast start this season.

Richardson's done very well, admittedly. It's possible they're both pretty good.

Maybe, but what league one manager wouldn't have given his eye teeth for a transfer window like he had with Ipswich at the beginning of the season? It's league 1 Man Cityesque.

I think to dump Cook for McKenna though is stupid but of course that wasn't the idea when they sacked him, it was Lampard or Wilder or Mowbray or Farke that they thought they could get. :fl:

The difference between our L1 squad in 2017/19 and Ipswich's L1 squad now is that when Cook joined Latics, we still had a nucleus of players too good for League One when we got relegated (Nick Powell, Dan Burn, Sam Morsy, Nathan Byrne, Michael Jacobs). Cook simply built around those players as his pillars, adding quality around them like Walton, Evans, Dunkley etc. Ipswich however, has been a total rebuild from top to bottom. No pillars to build around, just a bin the lot and start again from scratch job, which always takes a lot longer to click together.

Plus, our two seasons under Cook in the Championship could have easily seen him sacked midway through both. The club kept faith and we ultimately achieved our goals, staying up first season and finishing mid table second season (not including points deduction). I think it's simply a case of the decision makers at Ipswich shitting themselves. Probably checked the books and realised just how much money they'll lose if they don't get promoted.

Cook and Ipswich assembled a decent squad, on paper perhaps the best in the league but without coming across itk I'd heard he upset a fair few players who got shunted aside.

Think this is a risky appointment but fair play for going outside the box and picking someone not on the usual merry go round.

I think the Ipswich squad is unbalanced and at this point certainly not the best in the league. They signed a top striker in Bonne and have 2 very good back ups. They also signed some top centre midfielders for this level but then for attacking midfielders they signed about 5/6 number 10s and try to spread them out when they were all competing for 1 spot.

Then they seemed to completely forget they needed a defence and panic bought poor defenders late on. Seems also that half thr signing were Cook type players and half someone else's. Very difficult to try and blend them together.

If they can get a new keeper, new back 4 and another AM a bit different to what they have in January then they could have a fantastic second half of the season if the new manager does well. They need to stop conceding so many.

If we can keep Walton in January we certainly don't need a new keeper; he & Bonne are our players of the season so far ironically. Mumours that Walton will be recalled by Brighton in January to sell him, though. He's single handedly saved us from some very embarassing score lines this season!

Edmunson at the back has also been excellent.

We certainly need 1 or 2 in Jan though, I'm in complete agreement. Whether that happens & makes the playoffs realistic, I have my doubts. I'm not quite at the "let's plan for next season" stage, but it's now or never in Jan.

Looking at the betting, Doncaster’s only hope of staying up this season lay with Boris and the government.

Already relegated if that happens, only way we stay up is if the owners spend some money something they haven’t done in years

Hope he's over his illness like but Paul Simpson is one clueless, retarded waste of space.
