Fair enough. I wouldn't want him back here in this division.
I wouldn't want him back either, but not because I think he's a bad manager. I'm a firm believer in "never go back".

So he did fine for 2 seasons then.
Highest ever finish (joint) so I make you right bauy. He weren't bad. Finished his 12 year tenure with a 39% winrate which is not too shabby. The bridge was well and truly burnt after the contract renegotiation drama in 2016 so I'd put money on us winning the league before betting on Tizzers return.

Matt Taylors winrate stands at 44%, so a bit better than Tizwoz but he really only racked that score up in L2. You would expect that to be a bit lower in L1.

Anyhooo I reckon this time it will definitely be an external appointment and most likely a new face, albeit someone with ties to the westcountry.

I have absolutely no idea who might get it. I can see it being Nicholson, particularly if he does well in the next few tough games. Equally I can see it being an external, although I have a feeling it won't be anyone with L1/2 experience. Probably will be some random that no one in Exeter has ever heard of...

Artell is now favourite and he doesn't have any ties to the South West. I hope its someone else.

Would be a good fit surely? Plays football on the deck (or did at Crewe)

I have a strong feeling it won't be him. Can't say why, other than (as I said) I feel like it won't be someone with league management experience.

Artell wouldn't be a bad shout. He's used to a club that wants to play nice football and had a culture of bringing kids through their youth system.

As far as I recall, the issue at Crewe last season was little to do with him, and more to do with them not backing him. I certainly wouldn't have minded him at Cheltenham when Duff went.

It was a lot to do with him. He's a very clever bloke and a good PR man who will downplay what he did wrong and try and make out the conditions he worked under were the problem.

- Failed to scout and recruit properly when he knew players would be sold or leave on a free in 2021. He was offered a Head of Recruitment but declined, saying he'd rather do it himself. He was eventually overruled shortly before his departure.

- Every signing he made in Summer 2021 (I believe we made 11 signings) has already left the club bar Chris Long. Of these 11, 2 retired under mysterious circumstances, 2 were paid off by January and another was supposed to be paid off but wasn't until after Artell left the club. A lot of players fell out with him last season and the frivolous wasting of the club's highest budget for 13 years on pay-offs and poor recruitment was totally unacceptable.

- Tactical decisions were baffling. My mate reckons we played 18 players at wing back at various times last season in the league. Even strikers Mikael Mandron (a regular at RWB) and cameo appearances there from Bassala Sambou and Dan Agyei for a game or two each were baffling. It was like an 8 year old kid on Football Manager and was embarrassing for us fans to watch.

- He wasn't on speaking terms with any of his coaching staff when he left us bar the GK Coach. Some staff at the club were ready to leave had he stayed, and none will follow him to Exeter should he get the job. So it'll be interesting to see how he gets on with a new backroom staff given he's such a control freak.

- He was great at developing young talent, but there was also a downside to that. Underperforming Academy players were given contracts like confetti and had no incentive to perform given they were always handed 2 year contracts when out of contract bar Callum Saunders who had an appalling attitude. We're still paying for this now and will do so next season. 4 players miles off EFL standard are taking home between £1000-£1500 a week for the next two years. That eats into our budget and hamstrings our managers hopes of building a Top 7 squad at L2 level. Paying the 3 the manager wants rid of now will cost us between £250K and £300K if they hold out as they're all under contract until 2024. One of those players is an attacking midfielder who hasn't even got a goal or assist for us and he's 22 years of age. He even had the audacity to turn down a move to Altrincham a month ago.

- Set unwanted club records last season. Most consecutive home defeats in our 145 year history the most embarrassing of the lot.

- After his sacking, blamed the club for not getting help for him yet was given a generous budget (by our standards), extra money in January (and our form got worse), Alex Neil brought in as a consultant and a backroom reshuffle before he was deservedly sacked.

Despite these red flags from last season, I must stress he's a genuine bloke as a person. I've met him a few times and I can't speak highly enough of how he represented this club as a player and as a manager. He's the only person in club history to win promotion as both player and manager, so he's an all time legend and I wish him well wherever he goes. He also never took a swipe at the fans once no matter how bad things got last season, and that's why he'll always have my respect compared to Steve Davis who had a pop at our fans regularly in a similar position.

But, when the going got tough, he got exposed very, very quickly as a limited manager. Based on the last 12 months, I'd be very concerned if he got the Exeter job. The setup is similar to Crewe and that'll appeal to him but location wise, he's been settled in Chester for many years and has been open about how he was mentally shot when it ended with us. Is a relocation 200+ miles away the best thing to do months after the worst time of his career? I'm not sure it is. And I think managing in League One when he was getting beat in that division on a weekly basis last season is also a major concern too.

I would love him to succeed elsewhere. He's one of the games good guys and he deserves it. But he's got to adapt and change his ways. He needs to be prepared to listen to his assistants and delegate control at times. If he does that, then Exeter (or whoever) will be getting a good manager who has learned from his mistakes. But given he's known for being notoriously stubborn, the jury is out on that one.

I feel that Mannings managerial style is fine when everything is going right but it doesn't seem strong enough when things are going wrong. Last seasons team was not his, it was Martins. Maybe he has just been found out but this squad, while not as good as last years, is way better than how it's performing now.

I think he's earned a bit more time but people are not happy and Winkleman is getting caught up in the flack which is pretty unheard of so far.

The above point it partly why I asked the question a week or two back r.e. Plymouth's squad. I'm always a little sceptical of a manager who takes over an already decent side because I never think you know their true worth until they have to build their own.

That goes back to our John Schofield days in 2006/07 where he took over a Keith Alexander side, did very well for most of the season yet when it came to having to replace players he left us with a squad of generally poor signings who had nothing about them. I know managers have recruitment teams help them now so it's not the same as back then, but still.

It’s a fair point that our squad is still largely Lowe’s, and a lot of them their contracts are up next year, so Schuey has a challenge. However, he was the Assistant Manager so would have had some input into that squad. Moreover, the ones he have brought in this season are doing the job. Sam Cosgrove was villified as the worst player ever at some of the teams he had played for. Think he is doing okay at the moment.

The real skill that Schuey is adding, and he is way better than Lowe, is tweaking the tactics and as people like K-win and others have said his tactical and personnel changes have outsmarted his more experienced oppo managers.

That's true, when we appointed Schofield he was primarily in the youth team and ducking into the first team every once in a while rather than being fully involved in it.

I wasn't knocking Schumacher by the way or trying to devalue what he's done so far, he's clearly doing a really good job.

No worries, I did not take it as knocking Schuey. The point you make is perfectly sensible, and Schuey will be tested next year simply because so many contracts are up, though already players are extending their contracts.

Wouldn't particularly read much into the odds, it doesn't really take much to move these markets outside of the Premier League. Schumacher would be crazy to leave a stable club like Plymouth for what seems a borderline basket-case behind the scenes at Albion.

I wouldnt be so sure. I think Darrell Clarke probably regrets not going to Leeds when he was with us.
Sometimes you just have to take the chances when they arise as things can change quickly in football
