as Hurrikeen said Forte is worth next to nothing with his dodgy knees and injury record.

That's not how football actually works though. Player/agent power. As soon as Garner gets his head turned with Champ football and a 100% pay rise...which he will eventually in League 1 (play all the 'he's a Pweston fan tho' all you want, doesn't mean shit most of the time) then you have to sell. Whether you need to sell or not is irrelevant to some extent and the bigger club will know that.

Yeah but that's assuming worse case scenario of the player kicking up a fuss, which obviously does happen but not everytime.

I wouldn't worry about that in this case. He's not an immature kid and he's already played in the Championship. I can't see him spitting his dummy out if we reject an opening bid or two.

What Garner is worth and what we can ask for him are two completely different things. We have a very wealthy owner who isn't going to put his hand in his pocket to spend millions, but it means we are in the position to hold out for big money if we are to sell our most prized asset.

No offence but we are not a Walsall or a Chesterfield who every so often need to sell to survive, we can keep Garner as long as we want to until the offer is big enough to tempt us.

There is plenty of money now floating around the Championship through either parachute payments or foreign investment. When you look at the fees being quoted for a Rhodes or Deeney, see the 11mil paid for McCormack by Fulham, even the 5mil of Assambalonga to Forest, 3mil for Garner would be chicken feed for most Championship clubs.

Time will tell but I'd put money on us getting a huge fee (for this level).
But where Garner differs to Rhodes and Assombalonga is he's already had a chance at Championship level and struggled.

He's much more comparable to Baldock, who was younger, scored more goals in a worse team and went for £2m

At 27 (after April) you have to weigh up resale value as well...give him a 3 year contract and that evaporates pretty much at his age unlike Assombalonga, Wells, Wilson, Rhodes. Who were/are all young enough to give you a few good years and retain their value.

Having said all that, silly ridiculous fees will probably start trickling down with the new TV deal. Finish bottom of the Prem and you get £99m. Spending £10m on a striker to help you go back up will probably become the norm.

Williams is on £7k per week from the PdC era.

Wherever he goes (if anywhere) he isn't going to get anywhere near that.

This youngster Hylton seems like he could be another nugget, too

He has found his level, Garner.

No Championship side worth their salt will be in for him.

Ridiculous amount of fixtures playing every Saturday and Tuesday from 7th February to 17th March could be our downfall.
Twelve league games in under six weeks.

I get the impression Cott's has a loan or 2 lined up. As long as any new faces buy into our ethos, I can't really see a problem. I would imagine playing for us for the rest of the season would be quite attractive at the mo.

Not ideal, but top of the league, on great form.....if I was playing I'd want a game everyday atm.

No it wont be. A serious chance to pull away from either MK Dons or Swindon. We have the squad to play Saturday-Tuesday and the team to win the games.
I am loving the fact we are playing more games and winning

Just looking at figures published in the Guardian for Championship clubs in the 2012/13 season.

Very surprised that Bristol City had the smallest turnover in the league that season.

Makes me wonder how those that do go up this year will manage financially

The already large gap between the Championship and the Prem will continue to widen with this TV deal and all that means is that the gap will widen with L1&2 aswell. The money will filter down to the Championship but we will see none of it.

IT's going to get harder and harder for teams to consolidate in the Championship with teams getting £99m for finishing bottom of the premier league and parachute payments getting more and more ridiculous.

I dunno, Posh might have got some decent transfer fees that season. Our main problem was wages to turnover though which was a disgusting 190%

The only positive I can think about the new TV deal...Championship sides will be willing to throw around larger fees for players at this level and below, namely on the basis that they have more to offer and clubs will want to 'do them' for all they can. What used to be a £1m player, will soon become a £2.5m player at this level.

That has already happened. £5.5m rising to £8m for Assombalonga who had had 1 good season at this level!

About the same amount of experience at this level as Dwight Gayle who went for about £8m including add ons I believe.

Peterborough do seem to be doing quite well out of all this.

Exactly. It's ridiculous. £11m for McCormack completely set a new fucking level of insanity though.

So what chance does a 'normal' club have of even competing in the Championship?

Brentford and Muff are both being bankrolled at the moment and look what happened to some clubs who previously threw money at it.

Yes, I'm looking at you Bristol City and Preston - was it worth it? Are you about to do it again? Are you bothered if you do?

I'm beginning to think it would be preferable to be a solid Championship club then tilting at, or even achieving, the PL.

No we aren't doing it again, lansdown has said that and Im glad to hear that we aren't. Also looking at the summer we were roughly break even on transfer fees, so certainly aren't throwing money at it this year

We almost went straight through the Championship if you remember (bloody Dean Windass).
When we last went up, it was clear that the Championship was awash with a lot of money and we spent ALOT to try and match other clubs. How Bournemouth are getting around FFP would be good to see as they're a very small club in the Championship WTGR to them, as are Brentford (spit!)
While it's nice to have a very wealthy owner, I think Brentford (spit!) and a few others have shown that you don't have to spend massively to survive / compete. Bear in mind, the stadiums up there are bigger and better, providing serious non-match day revenues which we will have at the end of next season.
Is it hard to survive upstairs? Most certainly, it's a brilliant league with an excellent standard of football plus lots of ex Prem clubs with parachute money. It's pretty much a Prem 2 as the British players that would have played top flight football a few years ago are now in the Championship.
Is it impossible to survive and flourish upstairs? Certainly not but clubs would need to have the relevant infrastructure needed to survive long term IMHO. It does become more about money and less about the football though.
