We've offered deals to a dozen continental players according to Smurf tonight. Manager is sorted and continental and English head of recruitment.

Nobody could ever accuse him of not daring to be different, will give him that. Has its risks such as how will they adapt to the English lower leagues (and that's assuming they are actually any good in the first place) but it's good we're thinking outside the box. Hopefully though among these deals is an improved one to Andoh, really hope we tie him down if nobody else.

Shrewsbury have signed Jim O'Brien.

First signing by them that I haven't thought is absolutely dreadful.

Something here reminds me strangely of Notts County 12 months ago.. Fairly obscure foreign manager, English head of recruitment. And if York and Daggers hadn't been so awful, they could be starting this season in non-league...

It's ok though, this new Port Vale guy once had a pint with Jose so it's all fine

While I agree JO'B is the best of the bunch, the others aren't all absolutely dreadful:
Louis Dodds is decent, if a bit lightweight.
Olly Lancashire is OK, but prone to the odd mistake.
AJLS at least knows where the goal is.
McGivern - yep, he's absolutely dreadful...

Certainly not the most awesome group, though. I fear Shrews may struggle next season.

They are very close to be fair. Grew up together in Setabul.

Who knows if it will work, it's worth a gamble and depends a lot on the players qualities that are signed. Looks like now Page is gone the budget won't be cut.

Personally I don't particularly rate any of that group there - Dodds is just about ok but the other three are plain poor.

Now Now, you're not allowed to say things like that, they're all wonderful signings.

Whilst I wouldn't go as far as to say the previous signings are absolutely dreadful, they're just largely uninspiring or the sort that do nothing to make me think next season will be anything other than another struggle to avoid relegation.

AJ Leitch-Smith is a probable improvement on the departing Jean-Louis Akpa-Akpro and Scott Vernon.

Louis Dodds, and particularly Jim O'Brien, will hopefully add some much needed creativity and edge to our forward play that was generally lacking last season with the notable exception of Sullay Kaikai, without whose contribution we would probably be playing League 2 football this season.

The other signings are not at all impressive and, given our defensive frailties last season, that has to be a major concern at this stage as that is where the biggest improvement in our performances has to come.

Another concern is the imbalance in the current squad. We are now overloaded with midfield players, the assumption has to be that more than just the transfer listed Wellens will depart, but still lacking defensively with no recognised right back, although Mellon wants to bring back Jack Grimmer from Fulham.

Up front there are also question marks over the futures of James Collins and Tyrone Barnett. Both are still under contract but both were deemed surplus to requirements when loaned out in January. Maybe now Northampton have a few quid from the sale of players they may return for Collins, but Southend appear to have no further interest in Barnett.

Obviously Mellon's business is not yet complete this summer so hopefully there will be a couple more of O'Brien's calibre to follow.

Sorry, no offence meant!

If Dodds is your Kaikai replacement, then you're weaker, if Leitch-Smith replaces Akpa-Akpro then that's about the same in my eyes, so only O'Brien is actually an improvement to a squad that (with respect) wasn't great last season, and were it not for the circus in Blackpool could easily have succumbed to an immediate return to League Two.

No apology required, it was just a tongue in cheek comment by me in relation to comments I read from some of our supporters across the internet talking up our chances off the back of this summers transfer business.

Don't think we'll be coming back for Collins, now we've signed Revell

Troy Deeney has agreed personal terms with Leicester. Fee still being discussed. Would be around £25m. (Source: Sky Sports)

Love Kay, had a pretty terrible season last year but he's a real leader and has a lot of passion. Hope he does well at Bury, good memories from Kay.

Been rejected apparently.

On another topic it looks like Mark Beevers is off to Bolton Wanderers according to some in the know on our forum. Be a very good signing for them on a free transfer.

We have to get rid of our transfer embargo first :) I assume he is leaving you guys as he wants to come back North?

He's out of contract, so I guess your embargo might not be an issue?
A few mixed signals from our side as to why he's leaving. Was widely believed that he wanted to head back up north as his family (and missus i think) are from up that way and he was rumoured to be homesick. I think there's certainly an element of truth in that.

However, someone relatively ITK recently claimed that he was happy to stay provided he was given the same deal he was on before (basically his Championship wages) but we offered him a much lower deal and he's rejected that. If the latter is true then he won't come cheap (I'd guess he'd be on >5k a week in salary).

I have to say I'd rate him as probably league one's best centre half, based on what I've seen. He drops the occasional bollock (2 or 3 times a season) but he's fantastic in the air, a good tackler with a surprising turn of pace. He's also got a level of skill not many CBs have and is good for 5 or 6 goals a season. Only thing he needs is a partner who will provide a bit of leadership and organisation.

Add in the fact that he's only 26 and I'm pretty gutted he's leaving, especially on a free (apparently) to a potential rival.

Wow Mark Beevers still only 26, remember him coming through and breaking into our first team at about 18 years old and attracting interest from top Premier League clubs, shame it never quite worked out for him. He was part of our infamous £20M defence which included Richard Wood and Tommy Spurr.

We unfortunately can't sign anyone, even free's until the embargo is lifted. We are being told this will be done by the end of the month, but I'm not holding my breath

Brown hopes to sign 3 player this week. Confirmed one is Jermaine McGlashan, the other pretty sure is Demetriou and the third I don't have a clue.

McGlashan always played well against us for Cheltenham in L2. But that was a couple of years ago he must be getting on a bit now.
