Going by Sherwoods press conference comments today, it looks as though Williams was definitely considered for the role, but Sherwood admitted that it was a non starter due to the length of Williams contract here.

Good news. Williams' five-year contract is among the most important at the club in my opinion and only reaffirms that Lee Power knows what he is doing.

As for Sherwood's role at Villa, I'd expect a couple of Villa's kids to turn up at the County Ground next season. I know their first team has been awful for several years but I think I'm correct in saying that the Villa academy is very highly rated and among the best in the country, so we could really benefit from that.

He's just one of those strikers that had the ability but career will end prematurely, he's had so many injuries and knocks that he's just kind of...done, despite his age. He'd be best off going abroad, he'd earn himself a bit of money off his name etc...Just signing for another League 1 club would be the worst thing he could do.

Completely guessing here but he also seemed to be someone who wasn't particularly happy when he was at Notts. He's got two very young daughters down in London and I think he struggled with that side of things.
