We've signed goalkeepers Adam Smith, formerly of Northampton, and Sam Slocombe, formerly of Blackpool.

Cobblers and Pool fans, what kind of 'keepers are we getting?

I would have been happy for Smith to stay with us tbh. He was outstanding last season, his 1on1 shot stopping in particular was amazing and he spreads himself slightly Schmeichel esque when making saves from point blank range. Most of the positives are seen here
He was the football league keeper of the year in our title winning season. He also wastes time better than any keeper I have seen.

Cons were that his kicking seemed to get worse as his 2 years here progressed, became a proper liability when not kicking off the floor. He also really struggled in coming for crosses, at times getting rooted to his line, then he would try and come way too far out and get stuck in no mans land. Still he is really young and has decent experience, I would be happy with the signing, definitely has potential to play higher.

Echo what the other Cobblers fan has said. Solid keeper with potential to improve. Kicking is terrible, struggles to command a box and probably gets beat in the corners more than he should. He was probably hoping for a Championship move as well.

Positives as has been said, a good shot stopper and makes himself a real big barrier from close quarter chances. If he could iron out his flaws, which he probably could as they're not the biggest problems, then he can definitely play higher.

Thanks chaps. Always had the impression he was a good player and very highly rated, so it's good to hear you speak highly of him. As with any goalie at this level he will have his weaknesses, but hopefully that is something he can improve.

Still really young for a keeper so there's a lot of scope for him to get better I would hope.

Think Clarke is way over spending at Bury. How is he going to keep all these players happy when there not playing. Far to many defenders, wingers and midfielders. Can see a lot of players moving before the window closes. If not in January. Surely breaking the financial fair play rules. Struggled to pay the players through the Summer. Club accounts make dismal reading. Need average gates of 5000 at least. Can't see that happening. Vaughan be 1st away. A few to follow. Days last throw of the dice for the Championship. Shit or bust. I know what I think so do umpteen others.

What a miserable post. If Vaughan does leave it will be for a hefty fee anyway. You keep saying players aren't being paid yet this has literally not been reported anywhere. We've released 24 players and brought ten in, we've just sold another youth product off to Southampton.. if we were breaching FFP we'd be under an embargo, which we aren't. I'm all for keeping an eye on the finances, which are dubious, but that's the most negative post I think I've ever read. Why don't you try sticking pins in your eyes it sounds like you'd have more fun.

Tom Aldred of Blackpool and some striker from Newcastle close to signing apprently.

Sam Slocombe is a good shot stopper but isn't very good with crosses. Got replaced by Leichtenstein International Benji Buchel in our promotion season after starting as no.1 and although Buchel was a reasonable keeper, there are far better out there. Sounds like he will be your no.2 keeper.

Long term gains.
Is he any good? Injury prone?
Definitely injury prone. One of those who is on the sidelines so often they rush back too eagerly and just end up getting injured again.

On the other hand he is very good player at league 1 level when he is fit, does tend to have a habit of scoring 8 in 8 then 0 in 8 though.

Jon Obika has joined our lovely neighbours.

Have to trust our recruitment team and medical team/sports science team on this signing as underwhelmed. If he stays uninjured then at least he should get fit and last a match unlike last season.

Smith sounds alright. Kills off any thoughts of having Lumley back though :(

I'm not going to lie, I like(d) JO a lot. Strong, good touch, good in the air and has a decent shot on him.

Last season he was prone to injury and probably didn't want to play in our shambolic side but if you get him fit and healthy you have a good league 1 player. Won't break any goal scoring records but is a very good, mobile target man.

Any Swindon fan calling Obika rubbish can be counted as bitter.

But he is injured a lot of the time and as said tends to score in patches rather than consistently throughout a season.

I know they type of player who becomes a bit fragile during a shit season - every club has those. Cheers

Rumours that we are about to sign Regan Poole on loan from Man U. Played on loan at Newport a few years ago under JED I believe so the link makes sense. We are still in need of 2 CB's so I would be happy with this.

He's a Cardiff lad. Grandson of my mother's cousin actually. Excellent prospect and was the youngest player to play for us in our history at 16. Released from Cardiff City's academy and we picked him up and then sold him to Man Utd after a dozen or so apps for us. Think he's made a couple of brief apps for the Man Utd 1st team in Europa Cup games but been mainly in their U21s. Hopefully he has benefitted from his time at old Trafford, should do a tidy job for you and hope he does well.
Btw how is JEd getting on ?

I'd agree with most of AS's summary of Obika. Scoring record is mediocre though - 27 in 3 seasons. If you're looking for him to be your main striker you'll b e disappointed. As a target man/hold up player for another instinctive striker he'll do OK.

Tom Aldred (Blackpool defender) to Bury confirmed. Good player but not sure we really need him?

Nathan Cameron, Tom Aldred, Adam Thompson and Eughan O'Connel all in the same squad? One things for sure.. can't see us conceding the same 80 goals as last season.

2 first XI quality defenders will be missing out if it stays as it is.. doesn't make much sense to me.

Obvious questions about how we are funding it, but our squad as it is currently is fucking quality.

We don't know how Cameron is going to react, he might not be able to do 2 games a week for a while. He may even break down. Thompson will have international duty.

True that is! I'm slowly but surely coming round to the fact that this could be a very good season. Our defence is top notch for this level now.

Slocombe is from Scunny and has played most his career with us, gaining over 100 appearances. As Marked Ox says, Slocome has a bit of the devil in him (he doesn't like crosses) and is a good shot stopper. I would say he is one of best shot stoppers in the lower divisions and his record against penalties is fantastic. He makes a study of each penalty taker before a game. He will do okay with you I reckon and he is an able No 2. He will be challenging for the No 1 jersey though.

Hearing we've signed Connor Ogilvie on loan from Spurs. Spent last season at Stevenage. No idea.

We've mad a bid for Matt Crooks but are apparently competing with another club. He was unreal last season on loan so it would be huge if we would bring him in.

Dom Vose has also been told he can go for free if a club wants him. He will go down as one of the most pointless signings in our history, he's played like 5 times if that.
Are these ones Swann signings? He seems to love a NL player but they rarely seem to play.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure all of his signings have been NL players. The only kind of successful one was Hawkridge who was well liked and quite harshly let go. Boyce was okay, Waterfall wasn't good enough for our level and Margetts has barely played.
