It’s a tough one as the question will be do we wait and see how Stevens recovers or do we go and get a potential replacement?

Saw a rumour we were interested in taking Kion Etete on loan from Spurs, that sort of signing would probably be the best short term solution I suppose, get a loan in till January and hope by that point Matty is fit and firing.

I've seen that Spurs want to send him to a Championship team - he's bloody class though, just useless in the air. Of course, if FGR still play their tippy-tappy way then being decent in the air wouldn't matter.

Will Boyle has signed for Huddersfield. Am massively intrigued to see how he handles the step up. He's not that quick, can be a bit Bambi on ice when having to play out from the back, but is bloody World class in the air. My fave Cheltenham player over the last 5 years.

We're seeing names leaking out about who we're interested in signing: a few of them I know well, some a little bit and others not in the slighest.

Aden Flint, Michael Ihiekwe, Tom Barkhuizen, Graham Shinnie, Luke Molyneux & James Collins.

Also, looks like Curtis Davies will be signed up despite interest from Bristol and Hull. Not hugely surprised at that news, he's been a ever-present leader for us since he returned to play a part in keeping us up on the last day in 20/21. Arguably had his best season as a Derby player since signing last season too, which wasn't at all expected going into his late 30s.

Jesus, some paper round that youth has had to look like that at 26!

I thought it was a coaching addition at first :ohm:

The tippy-tappy stuff ended with Cooper's departure. Last season was mainly a case of get it wide to a wing back, cross it, and hope one of the forwards will get their head/foot/knee/arse on it. And for the most part it was effective. What the new manager will bring, I don't know.

Obviously depends on Burchnall, but that style would be completely counter-productive to Etete. He seems almost scared to head the ball.

Mind you, with Cooper we sometimes had 70% possession but only ended up with about three attempts on goal...fine if a couple of them went in, not so good if they didn't...under Edwards there was far more action nearer the goal, which generally kept the opposition away from ours, have to say that tactic proved successful. I would be happy if the new manager is somewhere in the middle, although the goal shared above was wonderful.

Nobody leaving the the Pirelli, and nobody joining until the manager situation is sorted. Let’s hope it doesn’t drag on.

Clearly ahead of his time. I reckon it will be banned within 20 years.

Linked with Malik Wilks. He’s had a couple of good seasons at this level before but seems to have struggled higher up. Supposedly a bad egg too. I’d avoid.

We’re after Marlon Pack but face competition from Bristol City and Pompey and also after Aden Flint.

Both worked under Steve Cotterill where he won this division with Bristol City back in 2015 so hopefully that may swing them in our direction.

Centre-back Elliott Moore has signed a new 3 year contract which is very good news.

As has been said from what I’ve heard Burchnall’s style seems to be closer to Cooper’s, but in any case Etete (or whoever else we get) would be playing alongside Matt who would be the main man to handle most of the aerial stuff. So as long as he works hard, gets in the box and has a reasonable shot on him he’d probably fit what we’re after as a short term Stevens replacement.

I think we might have one already in the shape of Josh March...who was unlucky to get injured at the start of last season when it was a bit of a toss up between him, Young and Stevens to partner Jamma up front. As we all know Matty took his chance and never looked back, only for Josh to replace him when he himself was injured. I like what I see of Josh, think he is similar in many respects to Stevens, the sort of player that hassles defences and seems to have energy to burn...I have watched and re-watched his equaliser at Mansfield, the goal that sealed the Championship, for me that was pure quality.

Tbh, I’m not sure March is League 1 quality. It was a great finish at Mansfield and you can’t fault his attitude or work rate but overall he’s scored 7 goals in 49 league 2 appearances for us. It’s not like he’s a young kid still developing either at 25. We can’t go into the season relying on just him and Matt to do the business, I mean even Jamma himself didn’t excel during his last stint in league 1. It’s a big step up.

Barky should be very good at this level, but I have big doubts about his fitness.

It was all very hush when he wasn't playing, he has really bad asthma and was hit by Covid, I'm not sure if has ever really recovered. Considering his game is 90% about his pace, that could be a concern.

We've signed someone! Corey O'Keeffe, was player of the season at Dale apparently.
He won "Dale Dragon" player of the season, as voted for by our youthful fans :)

Played very well before Christmas whilst on loan from Mansfield. Went back there for a month, then signed a six month deal with us. Still decent afterwards, but took time to get going again on his return.

I assume you play with Wing-Backs? That's the reason why Mansfield (who don't) let him come to us...

R.e. ACL's, Lewis Montsma is expected back for us in November, which will be around 9 months. He did the ACL in his other knee a few years back and no-one knew that, you'd not have guessed.

Suspect it's a bit more difficult as an attacker if you're relying on that quickness over a few yards.

Ben Heneghan is another name linked. Went down with Wimbledon but seems a steady operator at this level. Would imagine he’d be brought in as cover.

Sounds like Marlon Pack has signed and will be announced on Friday. Worst kept secret. Not a financial based move for him. He's a Pompey lad, born and bred so makes sense.

After nothing for a few weeks we’ve been linked with 3 in the last couple of days.. Being reported we’ve held talks with Will Vaulks. Would be happy with that as a Luongo replacement.

Signed Armani Little, AM from Torquay. Looks a skilful little player with a good free kick on him.

Never really got a chance with us after we signed him and we ended up loaning him out to Woking. I think he was at the stage that he needed to be playing senior football rather than being a back up squad player, and wasn't L1 standard at that point but had potential. Good luck to him.

Yeah that's generally the sort of signing we go for, players with potential looking to prove themselves higher up. He's 25 so probably a case of now or never if he wants to make it at this level so he should be pretty motivated.
