Vale fans… did I make up that Dom Telford was on his way to you guys? He’s supposedly on our shortlist once we sell Twine.
I'd be amazed if he did come to us. We've got quite a strict waging structure in place in order to play fairly and I imagine he'll have 10-15 better offers than us.

It's really not! Running insolvently is vastly different to running insolvently to gain competitive advantage. We didn't run insolvently anyway, we just ran out of money as countless businesses do every day. I can assure you that at no point did we gain competitive advantage! I was there.

Football should be like normal business though, otherwise it's not a football competition, it's more a who's got the richest owners competition. Look at Bournemouth and Brentford, they're far smaller clubs than Sheffield Wednesday but they're much higher in the pyramid simply because they have much wealthier owners. If you can't see that football should be about football and rewarding good management/coaching rather than how many zeros they can write in a cheque book then we have nothing else to discuss. Sport should be a level playing field, which is what they have tried to do in the states. Otherwise we're just going to have a combination of man city/Liverpool/Chelsea/Arsenal/Spurs/United winning or coming in the top 4 of the top league forever more. It's so ridiculously monotonous.
Who said it shouldn't be a level playing field but when you get rewarded for failure and come down to the Championship with a war chest that allows you to destroy wage levels and fees you either let it happen or try and get amongst it.

That was our failure from 2015/16 and 16/17 seasons. For 15 years we barely spent a fee, hadn't a pot to piss and the one time we finally get taken over all the rules change.

The promotion race and relegation from the PL will become as monotonous as the top4

On that we both agree. The reward for failure was a joke. A far more exciting prospect across all leagues should be ....this is the maximum wage you can offer...no transfer fees involved...the bigger clubs would probably still attract the best names as they would want to play in front of the biggest crowds. It would give teams like Wednesday the opportunity to challenge at the top of the Premier league and also other teams who currently have no chance of getting anywhere near the top flight. Of course it will never happen because money.

He’s on everyone’s shortlist according to twitter.

On Monday it was Vale are signing him, Tuesday he was off to Mansfield, Wednesday to Bristol Rovers and today he’s off to Charlton!

Jojo I can get and was resigned to him leaving but I'll be irritated if you sign Reed. There are other players you can sign Garner you know!!

Apparently he said he wasn't going to 'raid' us but seems that's fake news.
Is there a known reason why you didn’t put in a clause that said Garner couldn’t sign your players until January? We did that last season.

We’ve apparently been in talks with Mikel Miller, ex Rotherham

The players Charlton have signed so far were both OOC with us. We offered them new deals but clearly Garner and Charlton was a bigger lure. Reed is under contract and so will be more interesting to see if anything happens. Obviously I hope we tell them to Foxtrot Oscar.

Our first signing is a little less glamorous, as we've picked up creative midfielder Jasper Pattenden from Worthing. That's about as much as I know, but hey, we've done well with rough diamonds in the past so we'll see how he does.
Well despite being only 20, he was already one of the lynchpins of our side, having his spot in the first team nailed down since 19/20. Even with the lower league stoppages he has come on leaps and bounds. A pacy, skilful players who always looked to take on his man and then get a cross off or shoot (one such cross resulted in the goal that won Worthing the Isthmian League).

Personally I'm gutted that he's gone but he definitely deserves the chance in the football league and the fans wish him well. Seems a good lad so can see why Ainsworth would take a punt on him.

So it looks like Sadou Diallo is part of the squad at our training camp but still no news on Nicky Cadden, which is obviously the bigger worry.

thanks for this, I guess it's good to have young players come in hungry to show what they can do, especially in a team full of oldsters like ours. Anyway, time will tell.

Pompey close to signing Josh Griffiths on loan from WBA. Seems a decent GK from what I saw of him at Cheltenham and Lincoln.

I can't tell you how he did at Lincoln, but he was vastly overrated when at Cheltenham.

His mistakes are some of the worst I've ever seen from a keeper, but he was only 18 so you could understand them. He also really struggled to command his area, often being rooted to his line when he should come and collect a simple cross. People will tell you that he kept so many clean sheets, and other bs, but he had arguably our best ever defence in front of him.

All that being said, he did make some cracking saves, and you could definitely tell he had something about him. I'll be glad if Pompey do sign him because it'll stop our fans pining for him like some lovesick simpletons.

Twine is done. £4m in transfer fees (same as the rejected bid earlier in the week so I presume we were negotiating clauses).

Swindon will be owed £800k of that I believe.

I think it’s low, but if the club believe that that’s what we need for Scott to go then I trust them, they’ve earned that trust.

We had the same from Rochdale fans who said Bazunu cost them their place in league one. Bazunu made a few silly mistakes, but as the season went on was immense. Hopefully he has got those mistakes out of his system being his first full professional season and moved on being first choice in league one. If he ends up half as good as Bazunu then i'll be happy

Forking out £6m on Twine & Ballard so can't be in too much of a bad place. Sold Pope for £10m, expecting to sell Collins for £30m, McNeil must be worth £15-£20m too.

They won't even need to touch the parachute money.

I was hoping they'd be in the shit but i can't see Kompany going there without being promised a nice budget.

Exactly, he was two years ago and we won promotion as Champions, so it seems odd to slate him like I have.

What I always said though was that his mistakes and shortfalls were all things that could be taught out of him. It certainly wasn't a lack of natural ability. The commanding his area issue was simply him not using his massive frame enough, and the errors were the sort that you expect a young keeper to make.

He was lucky that he played for us when we had no fans in, so the errors weren't magnified and fans were unable to get on his back. But if you see the howlers against Grimsby and Newport (the longest goal ever scored btw) you'd genuinely flinch.

Thank you very much. Was hoping for somewhere nearer to £6m, but can't grumble with getting £800k really.

Plus the original compo fee (£300k?) so not bad business for a player that had lost his way before being loaned out.

Someone mentioned the same on our forum. I tend to think it's terrific business.

He cost next to nothing 12 months ago so to attract £4 million after one season of League One football with no guarantee of performances (essentially you're buying potential as a Champ club), that's seriously good business at this level. I'd be inclined to sell too.

Case in point, having sold a number of players to the Champ over the last five years OUFC's hit rate is quite reasonable however for every Kemar Roofe there's a Gavin White (who by the way is far from a bad player), he just isn't the same player to the one we sold to Cardiff a couple of seasons back for roughly £2 mill. At the time we all expected him to tear it up such was his career trajectory/improvement within 12 months. Present day he's arguably far less effective and was far more valuable than we took him from part-time football in Northern Ireland than he is now.

For every Rob Dickie sold for millions, there's a Marvin Johnson. Don't underestimate that fee; if he doesn't perform he'll be back here within a year or two.

Oh absolutely. I don't think Wellens rated him and his loan spell at Newport was where he really shone. He then kicked on with us in our disastrous season in League 1 but by then we were in downfall and his move to you was definitely the right move for him. We're certainly fortunate to get over a million quid from someone that very nearly probably was on the road to being released at one stage.
