If I remember rightly, Oxford hadn't been in the Bottom 2 all season until the final day as well.

Same as Bristol Rovers in 2014...

I remember that, was our first season back up and finished 11th or so, took about 750, most of us dressed as minions given the yellow and blue.

Rovers fans got wind (incorrectly) that there were bristol city fans in the away end and it all totally kicked off, it’s only when the riot police on horses came on the pitch they decided to (wisely) back down.

Came across this stats table in Wiki. Thought it interesting enough to share.

EFL2 was created in Season 2004-05 (19 years ago).
Of the current members only three: - Grimsby, Mansfield & Notts Co, were original members.
Indeed only Notts Co are only team to have won Championship and been relegated.
Swindon Town is our yo-yo club with 4 different spells and two title wins.
Stuff like this is really interesting. Please keep it coming.

That 4th place finish for us too we were in the top 3 for the whole season until the penultimate game when we could only draw with Macclesfield so it was then in Orients hands going into the final game.
Then going into injury time in the final game we were promoted, (we were winning and Orient only drawing) and then the football gods decided to fucking troll us with us conceding an equaliser in injury time and at almost exactly the same time Orient scored their winner at Oxford which meant it was play offs for us instead.
17 years ago now and it still sickens me talking about it.
Yep that was a tough one to take. What was annoying was that we had no right to the title, but could have easily taken 2nd or 3rd spot. Carlisle were absolutely class that season. Bridges and Hawley was the best strike partnership at this level I've seen (it's probably been done before but that's a good debate to be had). Northampton were probably marginally better than us and Orient but there was nothing between us and Orient really, if anything I'd have said we were the better team. At the end of the day you finish where you deserve to but to be in the top three pretty much all season and then to miss out on the final day was a proper sickener.

Was Northampton though not Macclesfield mate. We drew with Macc the week before. I only remember that because it haunts my dreams every night to this very day and every single Northampton fan you ever encounter brings it up multiple times in the same conversation.

Sort of, it sent Orient up but Oxford needed to win and they were only drawing at the time.
I remember that season as it was very tight for relegation. We were hovering just outside all season but never bottom two. We finished five points ahead of Oxford (54 to 49) and about sixth from bottom but looking at the final table I thought we could have been relegated if Oxford had beaten us at the Kassam earlier in the season when we luckily won 2-1.

That anniversary was last week, fucking horrible. I attribute that totally to my distaste of Friday night football. Thanks for bringing it up again.

None worse than a 1-6 home defeat to Gainsborough Trinity as we trudged around the bottom on the Conny North, surely.

In recent years am 7-2 loss to Gateshead sticks out. Although a 4-0 defeat at home to Telford was particularly painful as well.

Funnily enough I was only thinking yesterday of the time we beat Stockport 6-1 in the Trophy. They were in Conference North and I think had gone part time - in a much better place now ten years later obviously!

Northampton was the final game yeah but I was on about the penultimate game away at Macclesfield, we could only draw 1-1 which dropped us out of the automatics going into the final game against Notrthamoton.

Ah yeah sorry just re-read your post. I thought we were still 3rd at kickoff on the final day, but I've probably misremembered that.

Unsurprisingly we keep our most embarrassing defeats to the cups.

Losing at home to Coalville 3-2 in FA Cup qualifying
Losing at home on penalties to Hornchurch in FA Trophy
Losing at home to Havant and Waterloo ville whilst being a league club 1-0
Oh and losing 8-1 away in a 4th Round FA Cup replay against an excellent Swansea side after a 1-1 draw at home.

Spot the trend?

Thankfully I didn't go to any of these games due to tinpot competition, distance, a wedding and on TV.

Yeah we went into final day on 77 points and Orient on 78 so we had to better their result.
We also won only one of our last 6 games so even a middling finish would’ve had us up easily as well.

Yep I remember Reddy being off the boil. I've got a very disappointing late draw at BP to Shrewsbury in my head...and of course that shocker we had at Sincil Bank.

You’ve misremembered how bad it was - it finished 0-6!

It was also about -5 degrees and probably a sub-500 crowd (back when the crowd numbers announced never resembled the true attendance). I think it was one of the only games ‘Meeks’ took charge of.

Maybe I confused it with a similar hammering by Rushden & Diamonds (remember them?)

Got another playing joining Stockport Dodgy Knees Club in Ryan Rydel. That now leaves us with only one left back and 6 players out with medium to long term knee injuries, 3 being ACLs

Something definitely going wrong at the club imo, whether that be overtraining, bad conditioning or the pitch idk but it's basically killing our season already.

I see a certain member of your staff has linked up with his Dad at Carlisle. Is it related?

Hornchurch was an absolute gimme tie to get to Wembley. Burchnal's first game in charge and he absolutely shrugged his shoulders and disowned the result, saying he'd only just taken over. Never warmed to him right from the off, always shifted the blame for defeats to the players, the wins were his great coaching.

The trouble at Crawley all over our local news. Threats of ground closure and large fines and there are idiots stating it's all the fault of the stewards or wagmi

Why do people make these stupid excuses. It's tha fault of the idiots throwing bottles, cans and smoke flares. Nobody else. Absolutely no excuse. They can't even point to the Tranmere keeper given it large. In fact I think it was the Tranmere keeper staying he was willing to carry on that stopped the game being abandoned.

Bloody twats the lot of them.

We all have them Casey.
In fact I have noticed a worrying increase in the amount of pre-pubescent Danny Dyer wannabes in the past couple of seasons, particularly at our place, sadly.

That never ends well for me. Being 6'4, large and a martial arts practitioner I always end up sitting in the cells afterwards.

Learnt to keep stum as I can't afford the fines.
