They were more than pushing play offs they only missed out on the automatics by a point.
Thanks I do remember correctly then (ish), I also think they had some very very good loans, but also seem to just do very well in the loan market more often than not

Someone on our forum reckons we're announcing 2 signings today;- James Chester (wouldn't be a surprise as he played in several of our pre-season games) and Matty Longstaff.... Time will tell if there's any truth in it.
Isn't he out with an ACL until later in the year?

Interesting chat r.e. academy players. I always felt we were missing a trick down the years for various reasons and we've changed things. We've tried the U21 and local mini-league approaches but they didn't quite have the purpose we needed.

Pre-2011, we used to effectively give up on players at 18, which I could understand from a financial perspective but I always thought from a development point of view that was a little too early. 2011-2016 in the NL years you get no funding or protection anyway so it was difficult.

Now, we trial young players who've been released from local(ish) clubs - Sheffield Wednesday, Derby, Leicester, Forest etc to supplement our local academy players and we have signed quite a few from London and Ireland as well and appear to have mini set-ups in those areas and generally keep them until 20/21 now.

We used to send all our players to local sides such as Boston, Gainsborough Trinity and Lincoln United but their first loans at 18 are generally into the League of Ireland now, and it looks like our new pathway is to send them for their second loan up to Scotland.

A few of our released youngsters actually work within the Club as well in sport science, physiotherapy, the business side etc if they still want to stay in and around a football club.
Coincidentally, today we announced we're setting up an Academy development centre in Scunthorpe, so that'll be three we have. Not quite the multi-club system the PL lot are getting up to, mind.

Aren’t they normally called rehabilitation centres in Scunthorpe

Where's the other one? Not sure how I feel about this, definitely a bit shithousey to be moving in on Scunny's patch as soon as they close their own academy. Poaching their players if they aren't getting paid is fair enough and the overlapping surrounding towns/villages have always been up for grabs but actually setting up an academy in Scunthorpe doesn't really sit well with me. I'm assuming this will go along with initiatives in the local schools, etc? Seems somewhat underhand and nefarious to me. All a bit top tier and not in keeping with the community ethos that was apparently a core Lincoln value?

Rochdale basically fed on our carcass doing this, I agree it's proper underhand from Lincoln.

Welch was our 39th signing since June last year, with 38 going out. Managed 27 points in that time, so we’ve signed a lot more players than we’ve picked up points over the last year and a bit.

Nice to see we know what we’re doing.

Irish journo who was right about Mcclean is saying we're in for a goalkeeper from Sligo Rovers. 100k offer he says. Not really a priory position at all but we had 5 keepers at one point last season, currently have 3 and they are all well over 30 so could be something in it

seems Lainton may be finished - and not in the Antti Niemi way

I wouldn't blame Dale for anything. It was Trevor Brooking's EPPP, which the PL blackmailed the FL into accepting, which forced us (and a dozen other clubs) into closing our Centre of Excellence. The players were already released, Rochdale had every right to pick up free players

Bajrami is out for a year after doing his knee. The news for centre back reinforcements definitely got a bit more pressing

We have Rawlinson, Cameron, Tipton as recognised centre backs available for this weekend. Chicken and Brindley fill in there. Neither really convince.

Darnel Fisher rumoured but I think some height and strength looks required

D’Mani Mellor from Wycombe on loan. Seem to have loads of forwards now. Was expecting a wide man. Though we’ve got a few who have played wide at times they all seem to prefer up top - O’Brien, Kashket and Angol.

One in London, can’t exactly remember where/how that came about. We scout Ireland heavily as well, we’ve missed out on a handful from over there who ended up at Oxford, Sunderland and Bolton.

Scunny didn’t close their academy in the end I don’t think, they said they were but backtracked a couple of weeks later and are keeping it going. Ultimately though, you can’t run a decent academy at NL level never mind at NLN and if we didn’t step in, I imagine Hull scout the area fairly well, then someone else would. We can’t go too far south because Posh cover that area, to the west we have Forest, Derby, Leicester etc so north is the only direction we can go.

It’s not going into the schools or anything, it reads as though it’s initially weekly trials from U7’s to U15’s. It’s nowhere near as in depth as we do around Lincoln.

I believe he is a striker that likea to come in from the flanks. Maybe that makes him a winger :pond:

We've sent out long term back up keeper Dave Richards out of loan to St Johnstone. Hopefully frees up some money for a midfield loan signing.

You're talking about the U-turn they did in April to keep it open, I think? They terminated all their youth player contracts via a Zoom call on Tuesday this week, hence my comments about Lincoln being underhand. The timing could just be coincidence I guess.

Gillingham underlining their favourites tag. They can't afford to fail.

Cloth-cutting Wrexham meanwhile are having to make do with signing a backup keeper from the Irish league on loan until January.

Frustrating would probably be the best way describe him, one week he looks like a world beater the next he looks like he should be in the southern counties league

I liked him as an attacking full back (think he’d do well as a wing back if you play that system), defensively if you’re under a lot of pressure he can have the odd lapse. Having said that though he was offered a new deal here but chose to move on. Good luck to him though.

I don't get your take on it. Scunny have ditched their academy so youngsters if they wish have a chance through a partnership with us and Bottesford. I imagine there have been discussions for months. The club have continued to do a fantastic job in the community, we just don't write about it in the Guardian every week.

There's nothing to get or not get pal. To widen the context, I don't think lower league football clubs should set up academies in the towns of other lower league clubs. Nevertheless, it's a smart move by Lincoln. Just one that is ruthless and poorly timed. I'd definitely be a bit embarrassed if we'd have done that. Surely you can admit that there is at least an element of ill judgement here?

Someone’s linked us with Ryan Finnigan on our board.

Any good Crewe fans?
