been following football for like 20 years and have had mates and family in the game and I still can not tell you what being captain really means.

I honestly see it more as a figurehead role, people often blame a captain when things go wrong. Therefore giving your armband to the player most popular with the fans seems fairly sensible - provided he’s also well liked among the squad.

It signals more to me that Cameron isn’t guaranteed his place anymore, expect to see a left side CB in imminently to compete with him.

Also definitely one of those things where if Williams had done it people would be like ‘genius, keeps them on their toes, ruthless management’ but because it’s Maynard and we all know he’s likely terrible and will be sacked before Christmas it’s some sign of him losing the squad. Same as us letting our goalkeeper coach go, even though we had 3 historically terrible goalkeepers last season.

It means you get to wear an armband.

Signed Tunmise Sobowale from Shrewsbury
Good signing! Really liked Tunmise, one of those players who receives the ball and just looks to drive forward taking on any defenders in sight. Can’t defend though and I see your official site is referring to him as a RB(?), he’s not. Play him at RW and he’ll be a fan favourite. Surprised Hurst didn’t give him another year.

Sounds a clever move by Notts. However I hear he has a clause in his contract that once he scores 70 goals for the club he automatically becomes captain.

Doubt the club thought he would achieve it in 91 games.

100 he becomes player manager so expect him to be sold before the seasons end.

We’ve also signed Sean McGurk after a short stint last season. Terrific young player who I thought would be off.

Because he can’t defend. You must have worked out by now that hurst will only play wide players who are willing to track back and defend for their lives, in fact that is more important than being good going forward

Whilst I don't think they're the be all and end all these days, I do believe a decent captain can forge a spirit in a successful team. Alan Bennett wasn't necessarily the best defender, but he was a leader of men and he was the manager's voice on the pitch - guiding younger players through games and getting involved should anyone have a go at the fancier players. His only red card was when a Fleetwood player celebrated in Steve Elliott's face so he laid one on him - stupid in the scheme of things, but a message to the rest of the team that he had your back.

That sort of captain can get fans on board as well.

I'm a firm believer in having a real leader in the team.

It was noticeable that when Richard Wood came back from injury the entire team improved from his leadership

Tom Nixon signed from Hull on a 3 year deal, happy with that although he did seem to fall out of favour whilst on loan last season

Jacob Bedeau incoming from Morecambe, by the sounds. Explains the Cameron captaincy thing somewhat, wouldn’t be surprised if he was off now.

Definitely a strange choice from the outside looking in. Stinks of the club running out of options to convince him to stay so now they’ve thrown the armband his way.

Don’t really think it would make much of a difference in his decision making should a top end league 1 / championship club come sniffing round him mind.

All it means is giving it to a bloke who’s definitely going to start and taking it away from someone who won’t.

Can’t imagine for one minute it’ll make a difference to whether he stays or not, but it makes it appear we’re very confident he will.

Bedeau seems like a decent signing.

Good player, really liked him here. Looked good in a very poor defense

Not as good as Yann Songo'o but decent enough. By the way Bottega doesn't really know what he is talking about. He doesn't go away from home. If you need help on SUFC matters talk to me. I am the oracle

Bennett did the same for us in his 18 months or so, but I'm not convinced players like him need to be captain to lead on and off the pitch. It's just what they do. The captain's main role has always seemed to me to win the toss.

Dick Wood? Got a hard tackle I'd have thought.

Vaguely remember Bedeau playing against us when we beat them 5-0 last season. I am vowing never to watch the highlights of that game back so I can remain blissfully ignorant. He is now the League 2 Maldini until further notice.

Platt didn’t really play when we thrashed Bradford twice so I assume Bedeau didn’t play in that game either.

Like our two signings so far, targeting exactly what we needed with players who’ve played a lot of games at this level to come into the defence, but still at an age with their peaks ahead of them. Now bring me a functioning goalkeeper.

Morecambe (H) was probably amongst our best performances of the season though, felt like we absolutely took the piss out of them. I'm not going to base opinions of any players (that I want to like now we've signed them) on that game. I'd love one more starting quality centre back but that might be greedy.

Pretty sure we’ll sign a right-sided one. Rawlinson will be out of the door, we’ve released Brindley, and Macari is very promising but inexperienced still. Platt seems very much for the central role.

Just the 6(?) signings for Donny so far? Talk about doing business early.
Unless we lose someone (Maxwell and Olowu spring to mind) then other than a keeper I’d be surprised to see anymore. McCann wanted the business done early, the medical team have got individual plans for the players to follow so that they hit the ground running in pre season, he’s determined to be better prepared than the start of last season.

Relatively comfortable with Notts at the moment, keeper is the only glaring hole in the team. Would love an extra CB, CM and backup for Nemane and Jones at WB - don’t like that our main backup players are Chicksen, Austin and Bajrami coming off an ACL in those positions

I’d like a new first choice man on the right of the back three, then I’d see Macari’s role as covering both there and being a more defensive option than Nemane at wing back. I’d like to see us be a bit more pragmatic, if we’re playing away and a team has a good winger down that side, I’m more than happy for us to be starting Macari there. Same with Chicksen down the other flank.

Last update was that he’s likely to be a week or two behind everyone else starting pre-season training, but is coming along nicely. I think it’s likely we’ll ease him back in and he may not start the first few games, but shouldn’t be far off.

The exodus continues - Lewis Freestone to Stevenage appears to be a goer and now talk of Tom Pett leaving.

Not surprised by Pett - he only came in because of DC and signed a new deal because of him. As soon as DC went to Barnsley you get the impression the writing was on the wall - especially as he's based in Manchester.

Freestone would be a killer though. We currently only have two defenders signed on, and he's the best of the two.
